Trish asks “So…..the 1st vintage year for Neils and Co. was 2001–what did Neils do before he started his vineyard? He had to learn from someone.Who taught him his winemaking skillz”

Niels was winemaker at next door Beaumont Winery from 1995, prior to that he studied at Elsenburg -the local winemakers college then made wines in France, Chile, New Zealand & Australia.

Thanks for shining the light on S.Africa. Their wines are often overlooked. He sounds like a cool down to earth guy with a minimalist approach. Rock on. When will WL have his wine?

Well done. QOD-Ok, the wine’s awesome but will the Springboks prevail over New Zealand in 2007 Rugby World Cup?

Great episode, and really good to hear about the down home approach to wines of your guest. Make sure you let us know when you are stocking his wine. Thanks, Jim

More visible JETS signage, please. Niels seems like a great guy to sit on the terrace with and enjoy some fine shiraz. May have to drop in on him…..he’s the second coming of Joe Klecko!

QSS- Yes, you’re right, he grows only Syrah. Thanks. I’m guessing some vines of different ages.

Great episode, Gary! I really enjoyed how you basically tasted the wine the way you normally would despite the guest being there. Nice work.

QOD for Niels: Who else from South Africa is making top-notch Syrah in your opinion right now? Besides your own, what south African syrah’s do you enjoy the most?

So…..the 1st vintage year for Neils and Co. was 2001–what did Neils do before he started his vineyard? He had to learn from someone.Who taught him his winemaking skillz? Did he apprentice at someone else’s vineyard in S.A., go to school, or is it a family tradition that was passed down, or something?

Terrific episode! A great guest, with a true commitment. I’d like to know what Niels thinks of organic growing of grapes, including biodynamics. Is it done in South Africa? In approach to wine making, Niels reminds me of what hearing Red Coturri might have been like in 1955.

    Gary-
I have to agree that the comparison between
    You and Niels
    &
    Danny and Arnold in Twins
    IS VERY FUNNY!!!!!
It is a GOOD thing that you liked the wine!

Gary, would Mr. Verburg consider offensive tackle? Actually he reminded me of Terry Bradshaw who also is a very big man.

Awesome episode! You should make a point to have a guest once a week. I really enjoy these episodes.
Did you see the size of the Pipes on that guy???

Great, great episode, Gary and Niels. I really have no questions for Niels. I enjoyed and appreciate his business’ philosophy not to replace passion and the human involvement in the making of his wine. I can tell he’s a pal, and makes you sincerely feel invited to visit his land. Surprisingly YOUNG production; I can tell that his wine is very promising for the future. Congrats!

Gary, I’ve thought of you as a lot of things, but a ludite was not one of them. (Mr. winelibrary tv.)

Thanks Niels. Can’t wait to try the wine.

Was that Ernie Els? Anyways great episode. Small farms definitly bring across the romance in wine and wine making. Much to be said about that.

    Kahuna,

    Gary-
    I LOVED this interview!!!
    Best EVER!
Niels seemed to lighten up a little after a few minutes.
Old fashioned wine making gets my vote EVERY time!
    Great- Great interview!
    Please interview more like him!
    QOD:
At what elevation does the winery grow? What is the soil like in that part of South Africa?
Please come back to America and let Gary interview you again with more of your wines!

I echo other comments here in saying I love it when you bring in the wine-makers. I am looking forward to trying this wine — the flavor profile sounds really interesting. Very nicely done interview! I know so little about South Africa that I wouldn’t even know where to begin in asking questions.
