QOTD: Laundry detergent/soap on the finish of a 2005 Atwater Vidal Blanc. (I guess other people have said “soap” in tasting notes, but it’s the weirdest one I could think of so far.)

Gary have tasted all of these wines and have to agree on all but the Barolo. Tasted in a blind tasting then afterward and picked it out as a classic Barolo. Perhaps you got less than a perfect bottle. This wine matched up easily with the twice the price Barolos with fw flaws for me. I found a long violet and cherry finish and really enjoyed it enough to buy 3 more bottles. Bought the Baron Herzog for friends who like sweet wines (White Zindfadel) and they loved it. Have you tried or reviwed Hagafen kosher wines from Napa? My signature tasting note on the nose is Redken Hair Conditioner that I feel is the nose of all Alsatian Gewurtztäminers and that makes me dislike them.

I think you can open an endcap in the wine library for scratch and sniff packets? Get them to make a combo with – pepper, black cherry, strawberry, gasoline, black currant, etc. – the wine tasters pack!

Then we can describe our favorite wines – ok, fans, put the pepper sticker on top of the strawberry sticker, scratch and sniff!

QOTD – Orange Lipstick Granny – for a perfumey wine, like what comes off of the granny that wears the neon orangey red lipstick and the old floor length fur.

Sorry that I didn’t put down the meanings before.
1.”Sally can’t wear no thong” refers to a wine that has no finish/butt. Also, this can work with “Sally’s got a thong.” (Not exactly the most PC term, but it works)
2. “This is an hour glass” refers to a wine that has a big front, finish, but has a weak/thin middle.
3. “Low Tide” refers to wines that just have tons and I mean tons for junk it in..you know what blends I’m talking about…where is just has everything thrown in and is just WAY too messy.

most people who claim NOT to like dry “sour” wines, often LIKE a low acid fruit bomb from australia or california. I’ve poured it for people who “dont like wine” and they are shocked “wait a minute thats…that tastes good!” is the usual responce. I just dont know if we want to enourage the american addiction to corn syrup.

QOTD: “booty is herbal”
(taken from a tasting sheet… with many spill stains…)

QOD — I could think of many odd aromatic or flavor descriptions that I have given wines over the years, but I had a wine at the Once Upon a Vine tasting last weekend that brought a strange one to my mind.

The wine was a 2004 Lucien Crochet Sancerre and the aromatics and flavor profile both powerfully exuded two strange odors. The first was what I can only describe as new carpet….like when you walk into a brand new apartment. The second characteristic that I identified immediately was “linen”. It smelled and tasted like brand new linen when it comes out of the package or the washing machine, but it also had the powerful, but unmistakable scent and taste of the room fresheners/plugins/sprays that Glade and other companies call “Fresh Linen”. I found it to be very interesting, especially how intense it was. So, have you ever found the “new carpet’ or “linen” characteristics in a wine?

Jeunesse… I can’t believe you like that. It tastes like the sugar is making the wine like candy. Almost Manechevitz! WAY sweet! Not worth it for anyone who drinks wine regularly.. WAY To sweet! but the other baron herzog cab is much better.

QOTD: Off the top of my head: I was chatting w/ my wife about a 2000 Vin de Constance (S.A. Muscat dessert wine) that we’d opened. I kept trying to place the flavor that brushed across the mid-palate and I finally hit it: GUNPOWDER. My wife still has no idea what I’m talking about about, but that gunpower smell from a 4th of July fireworks show is in that wine.

QOTD: Ant-Hills,

Possibly an aroma that many others are familar with however the only way I can describe it is Ant-Hills…. The type of scent that ants secrete, a sharp acidic natural-chemically smell.

Shoot, scents that everyone thinks I’m crazy when I say them?! Tatami mats, sweaty martial arts clothing, boxing gloves (but that’s really like a baseball glove, isn’t it.) And my ex girlfriend. That’s about it.

Nice ep, esp. on the Herzog. In Germany halbtrocken (=semi sweet) reds are still common, mostly from Dornfelder and Portugieser. Often its junk, but then … sometimes, I have to admit wheezily, I like them, when I just don’t wanna think about what I’m drinking, and jus wanne drink on the porch outside, in the sun, without a coke, bit smth sweet, chilled and nice. Still have some Thanisch hb-t Dorns lying around. Try it, maybe a good alternative to the Herzog for your customers.
QOTD: a Freya Vandenbossche wine. Just an extremely dumb girly girl Flemisch poltician I can’t stand.

Ok Gary, I’m finally commenting on the old post — I know you’ve been saying for a while that we should be sure to comment on the old posts as well, and I’m finally coming out of the lurker closet.

That being said, I bought a few bottles of the Concannon ’04 petite sirah on your recommendation, being a big fan of Petite, and was absolutely blown away.

As for the kosher wines, I notice that WineLibrary doesn’t even carry anything by Hagafen in Napa. I know you don’t like the Napa cabs as a rule, but their wines are fabulous. I love the ’02 cab, and they have a chardonnay that’s surprisingly unoaky and even drinkable to somebody like me who hates the smell of it. They also have some great reserves. Be sure to check it out.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering what you think of the Domaine du Castel grand vin, specifically the 02 which was supposed to be a great year.
I had it a while ago and thought it was wonderful, but my friend (who was actually involved in making that wine) hates it. Though Rogov and others consider the castel to be the best israeli wine out there.
Also, the C blanc du castel is excellent as well.

woohoo, finally some wines i can easily get my hands on. what a shame about the yarden – their wines are usually a pretty safe bet. any chance of some non-kosher israeli wines on the show?
