This is so wild! When I e-mailed you earlier today to ask about 1. Eastern Europe wines, 2.Portugal, 3. Rhone, 4. Rhone, and 5. Rhone, I ALMOST included Languedoc. You read my mind! And syrah lives there, right? Gotta watch the ep now…

  23. April 11, 2007

I had some ROCKIN’ good Languedoc-Roussillon vin du pays (syrah-grenache) last year. It was a pepper bomb, but it was in a BOX. That’s right in a box, I’d love to get some more.

The rosé from Domaine Cazes in the Roussillon was the first wine I ever liked. I remember drinking it at the winery when I was about 6 years old, on a trip to the beach with my parents…

Gotta say though, both your pronunciation and hair were pretty atrocious today. Maybe it’s related to something else you do twice a day?

QOTD#1- I’m too lazy to answer.
QOTD#2- The Cartoon! I was going to say the cereal, too, but I think that was Strawberry Shortcake. What’s your association with Rainbow Bright. Hm?

    QOTD # 2:
“Rainbow Brite,” introduced by Hallmark in 1984, was young Gary Vaynerchuk’s favorite animated TV series. In 1985, the animated feature-length film, “Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer” was released, and to this day remains Gary’s favorite motion picture of all time.

While other boys of his age were collecting “Star Wars” Action Figures, little Gary was quietly amassing one of the largest collections of Rainbow Brite dolls and figurines in the Eastern United States.
A little-known fact is that he never sold his collection, and it is currently stored in a locked, temperature-controlled vault on the basement level of the Wine Library.

A guided tour will show that all of his favorites are there – the good guys: Rainbow Brite, Starlite, Tickled Pink, Baby Brite, Sunriser and Moonglow; as well as the villains: Murky Dismal, Lurky, The Dark Princess and Count Blogg.

Gary’s “Rainbow Brite” obsession caused him no end of difficulties as he grew. He endured a great deal of pain and embarrassment at the hands of his classmates who didn’t – or wouldn’t – understand.

But in his senior year of high school, he literally stumbled onto his salvation: he found that when he concealed his his deep-seated love of “Rainbow Brite” behind a macho, bravado facade as the New York Jets’ greatest, most passionate fan – his whole life changed. Enemies became friends once more, and he was no longer an outcast. His popularity grew, girls found him irresistibly attractive, and his sexual proclivities were never again thrown into question.

Gary has been happily leading this double life for nearly 15 years – to all outward appearances the ultimate Jets fan; to those who know him best, the devoted keeper of the “Rainbow Brite” flame.

If you want to become one of Gary’s extra-special friends, the next time you meet him, and he gives you a firm hand-shake, pull him close and whisper “Rainbow Brite” in his ear. I guarantee you, his eyes will light up and his smile will broaden, because those code words mean that he’s found a kindred soul, someone who knows the real — Gary Vaynercuhuk.

Every time I see a wine from the Languedoc region, I always think of the movie Mondovino. They had a lot of info on the Languedoc in that film.

QOTD #2: I think of the little furry creatures w/ stars on their antennae. They were called “Sprites” and were in the cartoon w/ Rainbow Brite. Yes, not gonna lie, I watched that cartoon as a kid.

THIS is why WLTV is where it’s at! South Park-WLTV parody, Woman wanting us to vote for her to take her shirt off (even though there was a ring on that finger), Rainbow Brite, Straightforward opinion about good AND bad stuff. Can we really ask for more? Well, yeah. We can. But we’ve got to like this.

QTOD Part Duex: ‘Tiny, damn pegs!’ as said by my father. Thanks for the trip to the 80s.

PS – Don’t drink the water in a snow globe. That’s a dumb idea. That can’t be good for your health.

And one of her friends was a white fluffy hairball…from the 80s! I remember, I remember….a loaf of bread, quart of milk, and a stick of butter…I remember!

gary thanks for The Languedocian episode. I am a huge fan, and just when they were starting
to get popular a few years ago, the double whammy of Cheap Spanish and Aussie wines and the low dollar kind of
killed the momentum. They are some of the best “real” wines you can get in the price range. And remember that that 20 dollar wine would only be 14 dollars if the Euro had not gone up so much,, alas.

Was it the hair or the wine? Did the french do something to Gary when he went to Bordeaux? The stat: 700 French acres outproducing 560,000 USA acres in 2001? Is anybody paying attention here? or are we just going to believe GV sine dubium. No wonder camera rolled his eyes. Loved this show but Gary, brother, you’re busted!

    One square mile equals
    258.9988 hectares
    2.59 square kilometers
    640 acres
    .75512 square nautical mile

Of course you meant 700,000 acres, hectares whatever. Thanks for the show!!!

What the sign in the background should have read was… “Sad day for the Jets – 9/16 when the Ravens win by three touchdowns (maybe more).” See you in Baltimore, Gary. QOTD- We all know BV#53 is right, but rainbow bright also refers to someone who gets smarter when it rains. Like “street smart” but wetter-er-er.

Ho-ly-Crud! Are we talking about wine here, or crack cocaine? Gary, you look hung over. Were you drunk when you did that to your hair? Too much wine last night and forgot to shave?

Well, whatever happened to you, kudos for going on tape just like that. I mean, let’s get real — with all the wine that you and the Vayniaks drink, there are probably quite a few that look just like you do today. And they deserve a little recognition for that — it’s a beautiful thing. Let’s not forget we’re obsessing on alcohol here.

It’s so much fun to watch people tweak out on the Internet!

QOTD: As soon as you fix that Robert Smith Cure hairdo of yours and shave your neck! This is national television!
    Rainbow Bright: Cheap-ass wanna-be Strawberry Shortcake rip-off.

  82. April 12, 2007

Rainbow Bright was also a popular hallucinogenic back in the day. Window pane had nothing on…oh, wait… there’s a Shetland pony in my wine cellar. Not again! Gotta go.

    YoungDave

Big G.- THANK you for a great Ep., and I will DEFFINITELY be grabbing a wine from Languedoc-Roussillon on my next trip to the ol’ wine shop.
Also- the hair looks ok, but there is a reason why they make those plastic electric outlet plugs- to keep kids from huting themselves, or to keep bored adults from inadvertently giving themselves a new hairdoo. Stay away from the outlets, Big G.- I worry for your health.

QOTD #1: I’m a TV/Video production major and I GUARANTEE that I could win the contest with the help of my room mate (the best editor I know) if we weren’t trying to finish our final work this semester to graduate…so my answer is: after graduation, if there is any other contest, I vow to win.

QOTD #2: Suddenly the lyrics “Butterfly in the sky, I can fly twice as high…” -that’s right- the theme song to READING RAINBOW came to my mind- Lavar Burton and all! (host of RR, aka Lt. Commander La Forge in Star Trek). “…Take a look, it’s in a book, Reading Rainbow.” …Wierd, I know- but THAT was one of MY favorite childhood TV shows…along with “David the Gnome.”

A “profound” Vaynerchuk hairdo. Beautiful episode, though. Les verrieres De Montagnac, the color alone is worth the twenty bucks, and everything else sounds so appealing too. I’ve come to a point in my life where I don’t like anything that has the name Calvet on it. Had a dissapointment two days ago that still has me pissed off. I mean, talk about a neck to neck competition with the two-buck-chuck. It didn’t come as a surprise, but this one really pissed me off. It’s also like french peasant’s wine, like you commented on the Domaine De Nizas. Thanks a lot for so much information, Professor Vaynerchuk

QOTD: Well…as a full time college student the only way I could make a video is without sound on my camera….or go to bust buy and buy a camera, make the video & return it….will I do that for you…I’d love to. When will you start shipping to Maine again? Ha…in all seriousness. I am just working on tracking down a camcorder. You should dig the video…we shall see.

Regarding the 2003 Mas Janeil Cotes Du Roussillon Villages, this was my comment last month in the forum titled Learning Languedoc:

“I’ve had this one and I would put it up against anything from the Rhone at twice the price.”

  94. April 12, 2007

    Ken

Gary, Check your acreage facts. I don’t doubt that Languedoc-Roussillon has more acres than Bordeaux does but I can definitely say that Bordeaux has more than 700 acres. You most likely meant 700,000 acres which is somewhere around 290,000ish hectares. Other than that, it was yet another great episode on some really great wine values.

Your hair; can you say Cameron Diaz in “There’s Something About Mary”?

    Hey Teen Wolf!

I swear, I saw the transformation begin to occur…must have been getting mad at the first two bottles of L-R! Don’t worry brother….L-R is still surfing the van, winning basketball games, and intimidating teachers with it’s red glowing eyes!

Fun episode…alittle more energy at the end, but I gotta tell ya….If ‘Big Brother’ ever makes a transporter like that…I’ll beam you over to have a bottle of Yquem…sound good?

QotD – I’ve been secretly giving the wines of your website tasting reviews…what else do you want man?

OK…you were cracking me up today. Languedoc has some great values…hopefully my warehouse has the Mas Janeil and the Les Verrieres here. I’ll give them a whirl. If not, I’m sure one of our competitors has it.

Umm…I’m glad you were as amped as I was to see the NFL schedule. I like the Bears opening in San Diego. Everyone’s going to pick SD, the Bears’ll come home 1-0 and then start their run to the SuperBowl.

QOD#1: Well…I’m not lazy, like a said a thousand times, I don’t have access to a camera, and if I ever do, I’m going to film something thoroughly disgusting.

In France Languedoc wines are no secret but I think you are in error about the acreage at 700 acres maybe square kilometers but not acres, Mondavi is twice that size in Napa alone. Having seen the size of these vineyards in Languedoc you are off by a factor of 1000 or more. These wines tend to be all over the place having gone from house to house tasting them and much of what has been imported has often been less than stellar even at the prices. It is pleasant to see good values again as the French wines have really suffered from the dollar collapse. I haven’t done another video because the one I sent in was so bad to begin with I couldn’t bear to do another. Light brigh…well my children had one, never knew what it was good for.

I’m too old to know what rainbow bright is even though my daughter did play with My Little Ponies. It brings to mind sweetness actually a little too much sugar, too too many pretty colors. It’s a flavor that sounds a little um… chemical. Fake. Kinda like Koolaid. Great show though! Love the silliness and off the wall comments about sports. Very fun. As far as video is concerned …I’m way too old for that too.

Nice to see some more affordable and good French wines. I’ve always found that the wines from France for export are inferior to those I’ve had in Europe and somewhat overpriced.

Not be be politically incorrect, but I have always had the sense that the French take the US for granted. That is to say, they don’t export their best wine at a fair price to the states.

I saw Tony Snow go into Andres’ hair salon on K street the other day and HES GOT CANCER! Have you been having a toss with Ms. Cheese Wiz before the show? She must be psychic to know that all I was thinking about was seeing her topless.
Episode #247 Gary awakes and raises his head from a Tony Montana sized mountain of snow to taste wines that he enthusiastically either really loves or really hates. Then he machine guns the camera crew.
    Ok… I’m old(er), bald(ing) and jealous.

Falling a bit behind on my WLTV so it’s catch-up time (okay, ketchup time for Gary as he loves those “vegetal flavors”).

I’m a Syrah freak/fan so I’ll be looking into the purchase links for the Les Verrieres in particular.

Question about Rainbow Bright? I seem to have one of those minds that remember annoying TV commercials so the first thing that came to mind was the snippets of songs played on the commercial which sold the Rainbow Bright music collection:

“When you work to the rhythm of prisamatism it isn’t like working at all… a steady beat to tap your feet, it’s inspirational…” “sunbeam, sparkle and shine, you’ll always be a friend of mine…”

Not even a karaoke-worthy skill, but that’s what I remembered.

Someone else also remembered those rainbow stripe, multicolor leg warmers and sweaters (even Mork had the rainbow suspenders); that screams Rainbow Bright – but which came first the clothes or the toys?

    Thanks for the great episode!

Gary. Because of your high praise of the Les Verrieres De Montagnac, I bought a few bottles. It is truly, “that wine”. I can’t wait to drink the next bottle. And I’m no longer a lurker.

    Gary,

An Old World guy, I nevertheless love the Constance as an everyday wine. You’re right, the oak is there, but well integrated. I love the fruit up front and think the finish is terrific. You’d pay $45 at least for any California wine this good.
