Oooh, I’m early today. =) I’m excited to hear your review of the Domaine De La Garrigue.

I’m probably a hermit, based on a wild guess as to what you mean by that. The rush to post before a gazillion “top gazillion!!!” posts appear makes it hard to know for sure. ;-)

Hey, I’m early too!! Hooray for days off!!
My palate and I are at peace. I just wanted you to know.
I don’t know about that one hour-plus episode next week… I gotta sit through 2 1/2 hours of Spidey 3 tomorrow… (I’m bragging; I get to go to a free screening – hee hee hee!) BUT I suppose I can watch your captivating Bordeaux film with the same attention. You’re kinda Toby McGuire-ish…
QOTD: I SNEEZED. And I didn’t even need a tissue. In fact, I am a repeat sneezer. I wrote about you in my shop’s wine newsletter and I constantly talk about you to my boss, especially when you give me ideas (she probably thinks I’m about to quit and move to Jersey and try to get a job at WineLibrary…) and frankly, I’ve probably mentioned WLTV to every single [active] friend I have.
Can you see the pompoms??!?! Am I your head cheerleader?!?!?

  18. May 2, 2007

    Definitely a sneezer.

Kim Crawford’s Sauv Blanc is one of my favorites that I drink consistently. Definitely above a 90! Come on Gary, you’re usually on point! Alright…you can have your opinion.

  20. May 2, 2007

    geespot

Funny, I scored the Kim Crawford an 88, it has grapefruit, yay grapefruit. It just didn’t bring enough to the table for the 16 bones I paid (Vegas market is bad).

QOD: Hermit for now, trying to work up a good sneeze however. Kinda like the sneeze you just can’t get out and you look really retarded as you sniff and scrunch your face up while trying to actually progress to full on sneezage. Maybe it’s time?

I am not really sure why the HD-DVD code is posted on your board, except that I imagine it has something to do with your recent affiliation with Digg and their recent outbreak of HD-DVD code posts.

QOTD: I’m a selective sneezer. I target your audience. No bulk mail. I work it into conversations/gatherings, write the link down for people, e-mail close friends/family who I know drink wine, and have pretty much forced them to check it out, and make a scene if they haven’t. The buzz is out. People are starting to say “I’ve heard of that… I need to check it out.” You’ve got quite a thing going on here, Gary. Truly special.

dig the La Garrigue. have had the ‘03 and not the ‘05. still $10? wow!!!

and love the kim crawford for opening before dinner or for hanging out in the spring/summer. year to year it seems consistent!!!

thanks for the great TN’s once again.

QOTD: Definitely a sneezer. I’ve even had the good fortune after driving all the way from Boston to meet Gary at Wine Library the weekend before last Christmas. Wow, what a madhouse, wall to wall people in the store that day! If anyone outside of NJ hasn’t been to Gary’s store, plan a roadtrip, it’s well worth the effort. Who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to meet the man.

p.s. be ready for a killer handshake!!!!!

QOTD- I Sneeze your show out to everyone like the germs to a highly contagious Belarusian fever! Hell I even physically force my friends and family to come into the store with me and we all bother Ian once a week or so.

    Justmarsh

    What’s up Dave Coulier? hahaha

I think this is the first episode where’s I’ve already tasted half the wines. cool! I found the Garrigue a bit underwhelming though. I remember it being solid, but nothing I was jumping up and down about. I love the Kim C tho. I think the 2006 is better than the 05. Such a great summer wine!

  34. May 2, 2007

    TagWorld Brian

Paint remover? Man, I was about to click “buy” on that wine, until I heard that comment. When I hear that, I think high VA (volatile acidity), which really grosses me out. I had to dump a bottle of one of my Languedoc QPRs the other day because of that.

QOTD: Definitely a hermit until I get a shout-out/ my show-suggestion/ &c. on the air. Then I’ll be sneezin’ like it’s flu-season (me to my friends: “Look at me! Look at me!”). C’mon GV, do a Côtes d’Nuit episode! It’s not fair that us old world people have to listen in from out of the room so often (even though yesterday’s was a relief).

    Definite sneezer!

I recommended the site to a friend halfway through watching my first show.

I have told most of my friends who have a love of wine about the show. I’m going to get this thing going in the St. Louis area.

My only concern Gary is that when any good thing gets too big it must lose some of it’s original charm. I hope you remember what got you here and stay true to your incredibly loyal and dedicated audience. I have confidence you won’t sell out.

Can I be a snermit? I have told folks, but not too many. And I’d love to spend more time on the boards than I can during the day.

GV, feeling your score on the Kim Crawford for sure. Picked one up after the WS came out, and it felt waay more one-dimensional than a 92 point wine should. It was good, just not that good. I wasn’t as psyched about the Kim Crawford as the 2005 Huia, for example.

  52. May 2, 2007

    GottaGoDrink

Great show today Gary! Plus, you made SoCal happy…a good thing.

QOTD- The hermit became a sneezer after getting my daughter hooked on the show, meeting you in Chicago, and so many great shows and wines. Cheers!

I’m definitley an (A) – “Sneezer,” and I’ve sneezed on several people… including wine store owners; WLTV is a great conversation starter, because I can say “what do you think about WLTV.” “what is WLTV”… etc., and then I get the opportunity to share what I think about wine.

Some people have reacted by saying “why would you watch a video about wine”; I think some people have lied to me saying they don’t know about WLTV.

However, I must admit that a year ago I was an extreme lurker. I came across WLTV on youtube, and I watched some guy swish wine in a spit bucket….. How did I watch one episode, and then become hooked at episode 198? I didn’t watch a single episode for probably about a year.

  55. May 2, 2007

garys trying to make money. What a marketing scheme, trying to make people feel bad for not alays talking about him. We should get some royalties!!! or perhaps free shipping on good wines. I sneeze all the time anyway I’ve been obsessed with the wine library since my pops took me there last year, I tell everyone about the WL.

Gary – Great show. Great energy. Great wines. Big fan of that la Garrique. Also big fan of NW syrah/shiraz. Gotta seek out that Rudi Schultz.

QOTD – A “sneezer’ of course! But you know that since you met a friend of mine at seder in Harrison who should have given me the shout out to you so you would know I’m spreading the word…

  59. May 2, 2007

If you post that you’re a lurker, doesn’t reality fold in on and destroy itself?

I suppose hermit, then. But a hermit with some ‘05 Garrigue in the closet, so I’m digging that.

Love Kim Crawford wines – always good values. Have you had the ‘06 Cairnbrae “The Stones” NZ SB? I was blown away – and $9.99 too. Worth much more than that.

QOTD: No QUESTION…I am a SNEEZER!!! I tell everyone at any venue with wine…and my friends and co-workers know about you…They thought you were my new “internet boyfriend” I had to explain…no…

But maybe I do have a little crush! (younger men..hmmm)

PS..love the code behind you! Way to hook the math teacher crowd!

QOTD: I’m a Shawn Marion. I don’t go sneezing the word out to everybody, but if the situation comes to me, I’ll go full throttle talking about the show and before you know it, got a double double.

Gary, Gary, Gary….Thanks for the love! Your message and the bottle of wine with my wife made my 30th B-day truely special. Thanks so much. I am hoping to some day make it into you store as I had someone in the forums who has been to Ontario and WL say our stores are 1/100 of yours in terms of selection and service.
QOTD – Sneezer – I have 4 friends who are serial lurkers. I never see them in the comments so here it goes. Matt, Jon, Fiona, and Tony, get off you asses and show Gary some respect! Even a, thanks for the show will suffice. I also ran into a local politican and told them about your show and how we should stop our government monopoly and let some private companies in. My QOTD to you Gary is……if that happens, will you open a WLTV in ONtario?
Thanks again for the B-day wish….I know you are a busy guy so thanks.

QOTD: Sneezer!! People keep asking me where did you learn all about wine? I say WLTV Baby!! My video entry in the Ultimate Vayniac contest was even shown at my Rotary Club. I was bombarded with questions about it and I SNEEZED all over the place. The club was one Giant WLTV Hanky!! :D Love Ya Gary and I’m lettin’ people know it!! ;)

Gary great show today… Qotd I’M a snezzing hermit…I tell my good friends and relatives about wltv but I don’t yell about it from the mountain tops. I wear my vaniac t shirt around town and when asked tell people about it. However there is small piece of me that wants to keep WLTV to my self… I guess It’s like a really great bottle of wine you want too share it with the ones you love so they can share it’s greatness but there is a small part of you that wants to drink it’s glory by yourself… Keep up the good work GV. I love the show and the forums and everything… It’s my great bottle and I’ll always share it with friends and family but the others will have to get there own.

I’ve sneezed via e-mail to my work-based wine tasting group and to my fav’ wine store here in St.Louis, MO–and to my friends–but despite all my efforts, I am the only loyal fan out of everyone I’ve sneezed on. I pretty much lurk in terms of e-mailing Gary (I’ve never e-mailed Gary because I hate to bother him, he’s SO BUSY! but I e-mailed his sister in order to congratulate her, and she wrote me a nice personalized e-mail thank you note)

And, infrequently, I post a question in Ask WLTV or I write something in the WLTV Forum.

Great episode! I love not having a specific theme and just doing whatever you feel like. I suppose i’d have to be classified a hermit but i’m working my way out, i’m pretty new here. I’d share the love but I don’t have a single friend who’s into wine at all. I’m 25 and know a bunch of beer, old e, and grey goose drinkers that probably don’t even know what palate means. I’m hoping to meet some people here who share my enthusiasm for wine. I really love exploring the wine world and finding the things I love. I came across WLTV with a random google search and caught the decanting episode. From there i’ve learned so much and realized there’s a ton more to learn and explore. I can’t thank you enough for helping me find what has become one of my passions. Keep up the good work! Go Bucs!

Well, this is the first comment I’ve posted and I haven’t told anyone else about your show, but I only discovered you yesterday. So what does that make me? BTW, the Cotes du Rhones sounds interesting. I’m not afraid of a little paint thinner.

    Tyler

I’m a lurker (well I was) and a sneezer. Usually I watch you in my video aggregator so no comments and what can I say, I’m lazy. The sneezer part, I’ve told several people about your program when they ask me about how I inform myself about wine. I’m very new to wine and I enjoy your observations. You’re an enganing host and very, very well informed. Thanks for all of your efforts.

Sneeezer….! I’m your biggest fan out here in SoCal…and sharing the news.

..and for comment 89. I reviewed The Prisoner. Lock it back up. It’s a ZIN that really wants to be a Zin but who everyone else doesn’t want it to be a zin…so they’ve added the other 4 juices. I’m not a fan. I have 3/4 bottle vacummed as I enjoy the 98 Parusso Barolo. Now THAT”S wine…!

Thanks for another entertaining episode. I was a little surprised at your evaluation of the 2006 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. I’ve drank this wine (chilled) and found the predominant taste to be a delicious peachy flavor. I really enjoyed it. I guess a warm bottle tastes somewhat different than a chilled one, or grapefruits are starting to taste like peaches to me as I approach 60. Maybe you could rate some white wines both at room temperature and chilled. Might be interesting. Looking forward to trying the 2005 Domaine De La Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Cuvee Romaine and the 2003 Rudi Schultz Syrah.

QOTD: I guess I’m a sneezer. I’ve recommended Wine Library to most of my wine drinking friends and family members.

QOTD: I’m somewhere in between sneezer and hermit. I would sneeze globally, but not all of my friends are into wine. That said, I have “sneezed” (via email) all over my wino, errr, I mean wine appreciating friends!

  102. May 3, 2007

    Panoca

Hi Gary! Another great episode. You are very consistent and that’s something very hard to find nowadays.
QOTD: I’m 50% Hermit and 50% sneezer. In the beggining i kept WLTV for myself, it was like a treasure you find in a desert island. I devored each episode like a maniac, but then i felt like i should spread out the word. My friends are all wine drinkers, but no too “intelectual”, so in the beggining, as i said, i kept it to myself. But then i started to recommend WLTV to everyone, and “some” of them watched the show and really liked it.
These days, is my main “theme” of conversation among my social life.
    Thanks for that Gary.

The Diggnation guys sent me over a couple episodes back. I went through the archives where you were more laid back. I’d have stayed a lurker forever, except that you’re so ENERGETIC!

I’m rocking the ‘03 Garrigue tonight and definitely getting some Cherry Cola hardcore style in the taste. Man, wine is AWESOME!

  104. May 3, 2007

    Robert F

You pretty much read my mind with the Kim Crawford. I’ve been curious about that wine for months, but alas, in the Loire the only sauv blancs you can find are local. Something to put on my list for June.

    QOTD: Probably a Snermit.

  105. May 3, 2007

    Jimmy B

OK, so I’m a lurker who tends to sneeze from time to time. I guess now that I have posted a comment, I no longer lurk??? Now what am I???

  106. May 3, 2007

    Johan Alexandersson

QOTD: I agree with Robert F above, probably a snermit. Friends get the link and others, I’ll show them when I need it. Your such a pro.

Have you ever had a Portuguese tasting? Would be cool to hear you talk about the baga, touriga nacional and perhaps an idiotically old wine of the ramiscogrape. If you never had a Colares before, they must be at least 30 years old otherwise they’re far too young.
Wouldn’t you think that the bonnes mares of the last episode would go greatly together with some of the traditional Belarus food?

QOTD: SNEEZER. I tell anyone who will listen, and plenty who don’t, about WLTV. I shot links off to people after conversations about specific wines or different varietals. Big, big fan of WLTV!

Nice episode. I have a bottle of the 2005 Domaine De La Garrigue Cotes Du Rhone Cuvee Romaine in my last order from WL and I really enjoyed it. The Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc was mentioned in the food section of the Washington Post yesterday, so it was nice to hear your impressions.

I must say that the Lions did pretty, pretty good in the draft, too. I’m hoping Drew Stanton can “show up.”

  118. May 3, 2007

    Fiorentina!

    Hey Gary-

I’d have to say that i’m more of a sneezer than a hermit. I meet so many new wine drinkers, especially young wine drinkers, and inform them of your show. You know your show is fun and educational with an easy-going attitude…don’t pretend like you don’t. Yet, there are some wine drinkers that would not fully appreciate your show…so they don’t get you! Why give a 1995 Chateau Petrus to someone who won’t care or appreciate it? So, again, I share you with people who will watch, enjoy, and appreciate your show and effort.

BTW There is not way that the Jets dominated the draft! My boys, the SF 49ers, did much better….Darrel Jackson for a 4th round pick…are you kidding me!

  119. May 3, 2007

Splendid! I am new to the show but I love it very much, very informative. Certainly a sneezer for now, talked about it with my friends and encouraged them to check you out. Oh and the Cotes du Rhones you reviewed, excellent price, I am going to look for this next time I’m out. Thanks!

    TIIIIIMBEEEEEEEEER!!!

I’m a friggin sneezer, and not one of those ordinary sneezers, I’m one that sneezes and sneezes 100 freakin times in a row and it looks like I’m going into convulsions and I can’t stop and I can’t hold back and I spew snot everywhere… it’s kinda disgusting, but it’s what I do. Only problem is I don’t have many friends so the ones I do have are covered with snot and get pissed at me cause I always tell them to hook it up and log on and post comments but they can’t cause the snot is sticky and holding them back. ew.

  122. May 3, 2007

Moderate sneezer. Notch closer to sneezer than hermit. I don’t really feel the need to horde, though I keep my sneezes confined to those who I think might be interested.

Hey man, its my first time here. Really enjoyed your episode. Nice to see that you dont follow parker. But then what sense would it make to make a new show right?:)
    Ever tried a slovenian wine?

  126. May 3, 2007

    TSchampaert

Hey just cool man. Had the La Garrigue too, couldn’t believe it was only 7,60 EUR. Let it open up, then it’s a real organza and still weel structured.
QOTD: I’m definitely a sneezer. Put an anouncement on our blog and am always telling people about this in every tasting, every get together. The ‘How to train your palate’ ep. is the instant classic.

  127. May 3, 2007

    Ken

Yes, I have eaten a ladybug before and I thought it was really crunchy and had almond-like flavors. One bug that I have eaten in the past, a pill bug, generally is a little more reminiscent of some of the wines that I drink. Sometimes wines that are Burgundian in nature, or a little on the earthy side, will remind me of pill bugs. Many PNs from Oregon fit this profile. The Domaine De La Garrigue is a really good wine and I’m glad you liked it though it appears that you found it more “new world” than I do. This episode reminded me that I need to pick some more up. You picked up on the pepper and licorice flavors as well – two of my favorite flavors in a red wine.

QOTD: I’m a combination of all of these – I’m definitely a sneezer because I have told family members, customers, and clients about your show. Believe it or not, I think the best aspect of the show is that it is very educational. I have told people that are trying to learn about wine that they should go back and watch old episodes that might appeal to them. In a sense, I am also a hermit because I probably don’t tell as many people as I could about your show. However, in the strictest sense of the word I am far too gregarious to be a true hermit. I’m also a lurker because although I have made comments here about individual episodes, I am not registered in the forums and have not contributed there. The primary reason that I don’t contribute is that I really do not have the time. But let me ask you this, Gary; if anybody was a true lurker would you really expect them to make a comment in the first place?

Gary, great appearance with Robin and Randy on the Wine Lovers Page podcast. http://www.wineloverspage.com/talkshoe/

I listened to it on iPod this morning, when I went for a jog. “The John Belushi of wine tasting?” I don’t think that analogy makes sense, but I get what they’re trying to say.

    Gary,

Last night I sneezed at a local wine shop’s Spanish Wine Tasting Event. One of the distributors that was there asked if I was getting paid to promote WLTV. Later as people began to loosen up, he even got into the act and introduced me as a Vayniac to several tasters. Wine was great, tapas were great and we all had a good time.

By your definitions I am a sneezer. I have introduced your site to a fair portion of Minneapolis, a bit of D.C. and Boston. I recommend you to friends, especially those that are trying to improve their wine acumen. Also,Kim Crawford happens to be one of my wife’s favorites.

    Mr. Cabernet

I guess there might be an improvement in the Kim Crawford. This has been high rated by WS for a number of years now. We haven’t been able to drink it due to its overwhelming grapefruit aroma and taste. We tried the 2005 and wound up returning it to CostCo. I know to expect grapefruit in SB, but this was too much. We could not find the grassy notes through the grapefruit. My alternative is Babich.

OK OK … hopefully you realize by now that I am no longer a lurker! I watch every episode and have caught up on most, if not all, of the episodes recorded before I became hooked. I sometimes comment if I feel I have something to say, and I have introduced myself in the forum and have begun to read some of the great stuff there too.

BUT … I am a hermit, I must admit. I have some wird personality trait – THAT I AM WORKING ON DILIGENTLY – that goes something like this: “Cool show … man I’m really starting to get how to talk about what I am smelling and tasting in wine … cool, my palate is getting better … god, I hope other people don’t watch this show so that I can sound cool and intelligent while they can remain totally ignorant, HAHAHA!”

    … or SOMETHING like that.

    It’s weird.
    I’m weird.
Gary V is most definitely weird.

I’m working those kinks out …

    I am a hermit!

BUT I HAVE told a few people about the show … my local wine merchants!

    Keep it UP Gary!

Gary, Listening to your verbal description of the La Garrigue and all the positive adjectives, I’m not sure how it comes up slightly short with an 89. Ah well. I definitely agree with the verbiage, which is the most important thing. Thanks for reviewing this CdR and I look forward to more. Lately it seems there have not been quite as many excellent CdR’s to choose from, and I was just talking to Jim about it last week. Quiet Sneezer. Found you through the NPR piece. Being a caterer and professional matcher of food and wine, I had to check you out. Now, I live in Oregon and promote local wines and foods, but I’m from Long Island, grew up working in delis and going to public school, and Gary is SO SO SO JERSEY! I got hooked. He’s a blast of memory of my favorite class clowns, the guys that love people, smart and funny and irreverent, but still would never be mean to the ugly girls who had crushes on him, always kind. (We cute girls respected that.) I tune in for the Jersey fix as much as the tastings. The juxtaposition of the two was such an unexpected surprise.
Meanwhile, I’m spreading the word to my favorite local wine artisans. There are some terrific wines here in the Rogue Valley, (amidst many that are overmanufactured table wines.) Someday I’d love to see Gary check out hidden gems from Oregon, particularly the Rogue Valley, Illinois Valley, and the Applegate. The Willamette Valley gets all the attention, but we have some true artisinal sleepers out here in this sunny, stony terroir. (For fab accomodations while tasting Oregon’s secret wines, check out Out and About Treehouse Resort. It rocks, and it’s just down the road. I’ll bring you dinner.)
Favorite varietal: viognier, an obscure gem. Great food matches. Try saffron gougeres filled with mushrooms, fennel, tarragon and swiss. Homerun match.
    Thanks, Gary! -Kate from Takilma

A little sneezer, a little hermit. I sent my brother an email with a link and big come on. He has more money than me and lives in Colorado. However I don’t get out much. I stay in a cave most of the time and meditate. I come out on the weekends to drink a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc(Eat a lot of seafood) or a Domaine La Garrigue (Sounds Like a Great Value. I also come out of hiding to watch the Crew whoop up on the Red Bull and how can you say the Jets had a great draft compared to the Browns? Just kidding. Though I’m betting you are still looking for that perfect wine to put away the sorrow of Cleveland whipping you guys last year!

Anyway, thanks for all your effort. I watch and learn and buy a case or so every once in awhile.

LURKER…. found WLTV by accident, kept it to myself for a while, eventually told my best Wine Buddy but otherwise kept quiet and didn’t post (soaking up the goodness).

Now I’m out and proud, catching up on missed episodes (hence today’s post) and looking for more.

  167. May 17, 2007

    JayZee

Wow! Just catching up after being out of commission for a couple of weeks. Nice episode. Nice new look.

QOTD: I would have to say that I am a A/B or Sneezer/Hermit, if you prefer. I can tell from other posts that many Vayniacs have a lot more time than I have to devote to the show and wine buzz in general. I wish I had more time but I don’t. So, I’ve “sneezed” a little. I have told e-mailed several friends who I know appreciate wine and like to chat about it and such. I have told two of my local wine shops that I frequent and that has been interesting. One of them absolutely HATES the show and the other has become a full-fledged Vayniac. To each his own, I guess.

Interesting notes surrounding the Parker review on the Babcock today. I’ve found many of the Spanish wines which are sold in our area and quote a high “Parker review “on their shelf-tags to be very hot to my palate as well (to the point I don’t purchase them or pay any attention to these numbers anymore). I wonder if he’s just part of the “some like it hot” crowd, if he’s tasting many wines and the heat makes some stand-out, or if his “score” is a prediction of where this wine will be when it is drinking well… Wish I knew!

QOTD – I’m a hermit with occassional fits of sneezing! Ran across wine-library when researching tasting notes on wines and quickly attempted to devour all the WLTV episodes I could. I’ve passed along information to everyone I know who appreciates wine but I tend to hit like a rogue-wave (it’s all calm, then a huge flurry of reminders and activity hits ‘em). C’mon all you Ivar’s employees and customers – speak up and tell Gary it’s true!

I was actually drinking the kim crawford as I was watching the episode and I have to say I think you missed some nice kiwi and goosenberry. I still don’t think it’s a 92 but i’d give it a 91 especially becuase it doesn’t have that cat pee smell I hate. I didn’t taste any heat at all either. Maybe we’ve got some bottle variation going here, or it’s just the fact that i’m drinking it cold. Any way, as always I appreciate your enthusiasm and you trying to introduce us to all the great different areas of the wine world. Keep it up!

Great episode. I was curious to see what you would think of the Kim Crawford since it’s always been a standard for me and Mike Steinberger bashed it and Sauv Blanc in general in Slate! That said it can be over the top on grass and grapefruit. But with all that crispness and acidity its still 100% better than any Cali Sauv Blanc. Was at Babcock last weekend and wasn’t impressed by any of the whites (a Pinot Blanc with a malolactic flavor?), but the reds were awesome. Picked up a $40 Fathom, although strangely I liked it because it reminded me of a $15 Bourgeuil! The Babcock Cuvee cab is also a steal with lots of spice for $22.

Okay, so what if I’m late to the party. I tried the Cotes du Ehone tonight – found it for $8.39 on sale at a local grocer. Absolutely fabulous. Perhaps the best $8 bottle I’ve ever had. Going back tomorrow to buy up their stock.

QOTD: Sneezer. Though since I was a lurker watching the episodes on youtube until I came here, I was still at the time telling people both online and in my normal life about this place. How can you not like your weird humor and enthusiasim? Good episode, but dissapointed the whites didnt bring the thunder.
