Mmm… I wish I had Franklins pouring out of my pockets. Those are some of my favorite types of wine.
QOTD: I’ve never had a Xarel-lo. But I’m going to Spain next Spring so I’ll take care of that.

Well, if I have a chance to be top 5, I guess I gotta take it…

    Top 5!!

Okay, now to go watch the show…Muscadet is an area I really need to learn more about.

QOTD: Since I only drink reds, I don’t think I’ve ever had a Sauvignon blanc. The only whites I have experience with are the sweet dessert ones: Muscadet, Moscato d’Asti, Sauternes. But I consider these desserts rather than wines

Very eye opening. I had never heard of (let alone tried) muscadet.

QOTD: I have never had Barolos or Brunellos

Starting to look tired Gary, can’t wait for tomorrow!

Never had a Muscadet, it’s on my list though.

Hope you’re having a good time in Greece, I hear it’ll stop raining soon.

QOD: I’d have to say that lots of regions you’ve reviewed haven’t shown up for me: Douro, Loire valley, I have Sancerre pretty high on my list of stuff to try.

QOTD: Fortunately I’ve tried all of the “major” regions/varietals through courses and self-experience, so I guess that leaves off-beat choices like a Charbono that I need to try. At least I’ve had to try it since I saw that Vermeil episode the other week…

    Hey….where are all the comments?????

I’m having trouble watching the Viddler Video….not sure if that’s part of the reason for the limited comments.

Can’t believe you did such a marathon of Episodes.

    thanks for your efforts Gary…and Erik…and Anti-Chris

An excellent remark on “trueness” in this simple wine, and definitely a valuable comparison to Pinot Grigios and Sauvignon Blancs that cost twice as much.

How about Vinho Verde from Portugal for the same purpose?

I absolutely love Muscadet… especially with oysters on the half shell. As for the QOD: Still have yet to try anything from Douro.

I have had a muscadet, not overly impressed but it was decent, here are my notes. “Wife did not like, I thoroughly enjoyed. Not so much impressed as I thought I would be, and I probably won’t buy again at this price [$14], but it is a decent introduction to a muscadet and makes me want to try more. Found the wine to be quite smooth, hint of fruit. 83.”

QotD: To my knowledge I have never had a wine from Piedmont or Chablis.

Gary, THANK YOU for this episode. I am in the 5% who have tried Muscadet – used to buy a lot 5 to 10 years ago when I was poorer than I am now. Since moving to LA, I have not bought one Muscadet. I just forgot. Instead of my usual Sauv Blanc, Chenin Blanc, or Pinot Gris with California salads out at the pool, I am going to stock up on Muscadet again and make it our summer drink! Thanks for the reminder,

    Joe

Gary: You read my mind. I loved this show. I am a fan of Muscadet, even thought I have not had many. I just started getting into them this spring. Read my comment from yesterday. You did it and you were on vacation! Bring on the Oysters.

I reckon by my best Jethro cipering episode 256 will barely be long enough to hold the “Welcome……. Vay-Ner-Chuk” and “you and a little bit….. wine world, aren’t we?”

Also, notice the left sleeve is now rolled up, looks like we have a prolonged strip tease in the making.

QOTD- Sadly most, although I did grab about 6 bottles of things other than my fruit bombs on my last order, baby steps.

Interesting episode. I’ll have to give Muscadet a closer look.

QOTD: Can’t think of any wine types or countries that I’ve yet to try. There are lots of high end wines I’ve never tried. I’m especially interested in French first growths.

That’s odd, I love me some Pepiere but it’s never struck me as overly vegetal, more lemony and salty and like having a little bit of the sea in a bottle, which is always nice. The Clos des Briords is even better, and I don’t it being much over 12 bucks … if you can find it, that is.

QOD: let’s go with Barolo, Sancerre (!), and Priorat–all of which are sleeping in the house somewhere, methinks.

Should trueness matter in wine? In vino veritas. Of course. Thanks for bringing the true.

Quite a relevant ep, GV! I’m also in the 10% of the Muscadet drinkers… One one the best I’ve had was the Chasseloir that you tried, except their top cuvée, Cuvée des Ceps Centenaires… Very good stuff to seek out! Another great bottle of the stuff is Loiret Frères Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie Les Clissages d’or 2005 which, at 4 euros, is a steal… Then again, like Gary said, nothing to spend hundreds of $ on, but still something everybody should have once in a while…

Any of you have ever had an aged Muscadet??? Read an article last month about how these wines could age for 20 age and be awesome even then!! I’d be interested in getting your feedback on this…

QOTD: I’m still new to the wine world, so there’s a lot I haven’t tried yet.. That being said, I have a bunch of friends who are over the place as far as tastes and I’m getting to try a lot more.

    QOTD:
I’ve never had a Pinotage. From the descriptions, I’m not sure I’d like it much, but I suppose I should try one someday. My experience, as is the case with many here, is very limited on 1st growth bordeaux and burgundy.

I would love to have the opportunity to taste these 1st growth wines, especially the ones that consistently score 96 and up, just to calibrate my palate with expectations. Wish I could find a tasting event in my area pouring these. Even if the price of admission was pretty high I think I’d go just to get my palate educated. But at $300 and up per bottle I can’t afford to just jump in!

Budget keeps me drinking wines (always under $100 a bottle and most often in the avg $25 ballpark. To my mind, every time I order a case I try to keep it in the $250-ish ballpark. That means when I order the $50 bottle I try to order a couple $10-12 bottles to get the average down.

  51. June 5, 2007

    KenP

Good ep. And with the summer months approaching… well, they’re here!
QOTD: Italian wines. The mishmash of DOC’s, its very uneven quality, makes it difficult to know where to jump in.

Thanks you for being conscious of bargains for us po’ folks! I mean it, that’s a good thing to focus on.

“A chemical that fixes the rooms we make mistakes in.” Hahahahaha

QOTD: I have to admit that my weak varietals are all of the whites save Sauvignon Blanc, which, thanls to you and your show, I now seek out.

    I’ll give a Muscadet a whirl soon.

    Hope you’re having a blast!

    Muscadet:
This seems like a great wine to try, but I’m leary because most white wines seem to taste like either a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon blanc. Is this a common phenomenon with new wine drinkers? Or could it be that I’m not sampling wines from different regions of the world?

    QOTD:
Piedmont! I’ve read about this great Italian region, but have not as yet had a Barbera, Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Malvasia. I’m definitely missing out!

  67. June 5, 2007

QOTD: I have yet to try a wine from Priorat in Spain. I just started drinking Ribero de Duero wines and they are stellar. I’m part of the 91.6% but I think I’ll be trying one in a few days. Now that summer is here in Florida A nice glass of really cold white wine is great when you get home from work. Wow, come to think of it i’ve never had A wine from South Africa either, i’ve got some work to do.

I’ve never had Muscadet, but I have had Muscat. (I know, probably not the same thing.)

QOTD: I’ve tasted but have never really had a Shiraz/Syrah before. I’ve also never had any true Old World wines (champagne, burgundy, Bordeauxs) or Italian wines other than one pinot grigio that I didn’t particularly like *cough*Folonari*cough*. And I still haven’t had a Pinot Noir.

QOTD:Greek wine, never made the venture. And does zweigelt count or is that just too obscure, I’m tryin’ Gary. If your going to do Muscadet, i really think you need to highlight your favorite Anjou/Savenierre. Baumard?!@! Quarts du Chaume!?!@#! Do it!!!

good episode. i’ve never tried one of these, although i’ve checked them out at the local store. i’m always afraid that they’re going to taste like nothing. but the oysters comment… i’ll have to grab a couple of bottles of this and shuck a few dozen and see how it pans out!

qotd: i think i’ve had most of the major varietals. i’ve never had a hermitage though

  72. June 5, 2007

QOTD: After reading all the other posts I think my what have I tried list is shorter than the what I haven’t tried list. I have really been tasting Reislings, Gewurztraminer and New Zealand Pinot Noirs. I also have been doing a lot of ports and that is about it. I am fairly new to the wine world so that would explain it. I would love to try some Ice Wines from Germany, anything from the Finger Lakes area, some French and Italian wines. I really love sweet wines if you haven’t noticed can’t explain why I like Pinots from New Zealand though.

Gary are there any good wines from Russia or Belarus?….I would like to give them a try….Thanks for the episode on Muscadet. Is Muscadet and muscatel the same thing?

  79. June 5, 2007

    geespot

I love Sancerre so this Muscadet seems a logical venture since I’m always looking for a bargain. The flavor profiles you described today seem similar to the Sancerre take on sauv blanc, very exciting, thanks Gary!.

QOD: There are several varietals/regions I’ve not tried, but at the top of my list has to be true Burgundy Pinot. I just gotta see for myself what the sticker price means.

  80. June 5, 2007

    Neil

The fourth show in the mega marathon and Gary’s getting a bit slower. Still in control but more measured. Twelve shows with 3-4 tastings per show is 36-48 wines. It would be funny on the last show if Gary blows into a breathalizer.

QOTD: Chile, Argentina and Spain. I’m more of a Cali/French/Italian/New Zealand/Austrailia wine drinker. Regarding Chile, I have recently enjoyed a red blend called 2004 Maquis Lein with a lizard of some sort on the label. It is 60% Syrah, 25% Carmenere, 9% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec and was quite tasty.

  81. June 5, 2007

I’ll admit I’ve never had a Muscadet but there’s one in our cellar! Actually, a friend passed along muscadet as a good summer seafood wine and we bought a bottle a couple weeks ago, still yet unconsumed. Although I guess I committed a big foe-pah? when a purchased a 2003 (im told it should be only a couple years old at most). QOTD: Dont know. Maybe Tokaji? If I did I would find it- love exploring personal new wines/regions.

I’m always looking to get a buzz on, so maybe I should give these a try?

I’ve never had a Muscadet-also lacking in Italian wine beyond chianti, sangovese, and Super T’s.I ate at nice Italian restaurant the other day and didn’t know half of the wines on the list.

I liked this episode. Haven’t had a Muscadet in a long time, so I thinks it’s time try one again.

QOTD: Not sure there are any major varietals/regions that I have not tried. And thanks to the WLTV offlines, even if I hadn’t, it’s most likely been rectified!

  85. June 5, 2007

Love Austrian Reislings and look forward to trying some muscadet.

I’d be one of those people who’s never tried a Muscadet. look forward to experimenting.
QOTD – Gruner Veltliner is one I haven’t tried yet.

Thank you. I appreciate yet another wine I have yet to try. Looks like a good option to go with the sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio on a hot summer day in the (did I mention?) the barren wine lands of Maine.

QOTD: Most Spanish varieties, super tuscans, Greek and other mediteranean (sp?) varieties.

Educating us about new wines as well as foreign exchance currency rates, what a show!!!

    Now we are talking!

I drink Muscadet often and like it a lot. Gary you should’ve explain what “sevre et maine” and “sur lie” mean. I always look for these on the label.

QOTD: Barollo-never had one, believe me or not!

Muchas gracias for the Muscadet episode. A friend turned me on to Muscadet several years ago. I liked them for the same reasons you do–crisp, clean, not fake, cheap! I have not had a bottle in nearly a year. Thanks for the reminder.

You nailed it, I have never had a Muscadet and I drink a lot of wine. I promise to try one this week.

Nice episode though not a big fan of Muscadet. I’ve had them after erroneously thinking I was ordering a sweeter, Muscat wine. I really like the Moscato di Asti.

QOTD: I’ve never had a Tokay Pinot Gris.

QOTD yesterday: You could keep a couple of boxes of wines you like and once a week have someone dressed up as Dracula set 3 of them (wines from the crypt) up for a blind tasting with a ringer that’s more or less expensive than the rest and see if it makes it fresher for you than just presenting some wines you like. You don’t have to do the Dracula part; I just like Dracula.
QOTD today: I’ve never had a muscadet and I don’t think Ive had a barbera.

Talk some more about “fakiness” in wine. Are Gallos fakey?

Despite Clive Coats saying that it “is properly recognized as a serious vin de garde-producing cepage”, I cannot say that I have ever managed to try Tannat. I think the problem is that there are few imported and I am a bit like a kid in a candy store when I visit my local wine merchant and am easily distracted. But I am young still, so perhaps there is still hope.
By the way, fine job question of the day.

The first wine I ever bought in a multiple case lot was way too many years ago, but it was a Muscadet. Before the 10% case discount it was $1.99 a bottle, and I bought three cases. Good stuff!

QOtD – until last month that would have been a Gruner Veltliner, but now I would have to go with an Rkatsitelli.

love those oysters and Muscadet on hot day – perfect lunch. well done. got an example of great Muscadet we should seek out here in the “fish bars” of the west coast? WTF are these places anyway?

That reminds me, in the interest of clearing up confusion:

Muscadet = white Loire wine made from Melon grapes (see above)
Muscadelle = a different grape found in white Bordeaux blends
Muscat/Muscatel = yet another white grape used all over the world to make usually sweet dessert type wines, although I think there are a few dry ones too

Sparkling Muscatel = one of the finest wines of Idaho!

  119. June 6, 2007

QOTD: Never had anything from Bordeaux…changing that shortly. Also, experience with whites has been fairly lacking – discovered I greatly preferred red several years ago and havent looked back (in my early twenties). The recent episodes featuring white wines are opening my eyes though.

Nice. Try the top cuvées of Sauvion one time. They’ll definitely bring the thunder and they last in the cellar (not like the average Musc).
QOTD: Never had an Uruguayan Tannat. Maybe it’ll change shortly as there is a Casa Filguera in the cellar.

After four and a half months of drinking pretty much ONLY loire wines, I’m actually in the mood for a change. I’ve wanted an over-the-top cali Zin for quite a while, but they don’t import american wines in small french towns in the middle of a wine growing region. :(

QOTD: I’ve never had an wine from Italy.

Well, it would be easier to tell you types that I HAVE had. The never-had-list is rather a long one. Never had:
Georgian, Lebanese, Portugese, Balkan, Grecian, Japanese, Hungarian, Canadian..and on and on.
I’ve never had a Muscadet, either. But I now want to try it.

Great show you’ve got here. I’m a KC Chiefs fan, not a big Muscadet fan. Today’s X-factor signoff reminded me of Dante Hall – though he’s recently escaped to the Rams. I’m wondering what wine you think would best compliment “Jets on the barbie” for dinner on December 30?! Something in the price range of 500 nickels would be great.

many people confuse Muscadet with muscat..
    Muscat=aromatic grape…
    Muscadet non-aromatic grape
also the grape is known both as Muscadet and Melon de Bourgogne

Great episode Gary. Mucadet needs to be brought to the forefront. Like you, a big oyster and fan and nothing goes as well with a raw oyster as Muscadet. I look at Chereau Carre as the “go to” Muscadet. If you want to experience pure “terrior” in Muscadet I’d recommend Domaine de l’Ecu. Anyone of Guy Bossard’s crus reflects the terrior of the western Loire. These Muscadets can age for 10 years.

QOTD – Never had anything from India, China, or Arizona!

QOTD – I never have had a Pinotage, I can’t remember having a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and not familiar with Carrignane (sp?).

Muscadets are fabulous values and this is the time of year to have them. They go with shellfish (raw oysters or clams) but not with lobster, crab, etc. Serve them cold and quaff away. No better way to spend a late afternoon in Boston’s North End or at a pier on the shore than with one of these bottles and some oysters on the half shell.

My .02; It was nice to meet a wine rep the other day that realizes the demographic is changing for wine buyers. I hate stuck up and stuffy wine reps!
    Shout out to Opici Importers.

  146. June 6, 2007

    Lawrence Leichtman

I’m not sure there are many wines I have not tried or regions I haven’t tried. Tryng to think of some but nothing comes to mind. I have had wine from every state in the US including Hawaii and Alaska. Many were not good many were not memorable but they were all wine. Muscadets with any shellfish are great and always a good buty. I keep about 3 bottles around for just easy food matching. The one wine I don’t have around is German Riesling because my wife just doesn’t like them alas. Also German reds as I haven’t found any I like.

I’ve had a muscadet before, based upon Gary’s recommedation from an earlier show, Domaine Le Fruitiere. Gary reviewed the 2005 and I spotted the 2004 in a local grocery. I bought a bottle and liked it and have since bought several more.

Another great ep! QOTD: I’m still a fairly new Vayniac and wine drinker/collector, so there are a ton of varietals I have not tried. The one I am still seeking here in the cultural black hole (OK) is the Spanish Albarino. It sounded so good on your show.

Hope you’re having a great time on your trip!

    Buon Giorno,

Another interesting show. I look forward to the opportunity to try a Muscadet. I am definitely part of the 91.8% who have not tried it. One varietal I am interested in trying is German Reisling. They always seem to get very good scores and seems to be relatively good values. I have tried some finger lake’s Reislings and enjoyed them and am curious as to how they stand up to the German Reislings.

Don’t underestimate us Gary. I’m willing to bet more than 4% of us have had a muscadet. I’ve had the Chereau Carre Muscadet Chateau De Chasseloir.

QOD: I’m pretty unfamiliar with the primo Italian reds like Barolo, Brunello, barbaresco, super tuscans and such. It’s not that I don’t want to try them, (they sound awesome) but it’s tough to drop 60 bones on a bottle. Where are the bargains? There are even bargains in Bordeaux!! Am I missing something???

I think I was one of the original subscribers to the
California Connoisseur. The reason I no longer subscribe
is that they constantly published reviews of wines that
no one could buy. I felt they were thumbing their nose
and saying look what we can do that you can’t do.
I really appreciate what you are doing. No one will
ever call you a wine snob.

I once stopped in Sonotia, AZ, the wine capital of Arizona, to
get gas. I asked the guy at the service station where all the
grapes were since this was the wine capital. He said,”son grapes
ain’t the only thing they make wine out of”. I was afraid to
ask any more questions. I think the wine maker of Chalk Hill
grew up in Sonotia. They manipulate the wine so much, there is no
trace of the grape left. Their very expensive SB is without any
trace of SB grapes. Their Chards are manipulated to the second
decimal point on exactly how much malolatic fermentation they
will allow. And Oak Monster …

QOTD: My “shortcomings” in the variety of what the wine world has to offer is within Italy, primarily in the Super Tuscan area. I’ve tasted barbaresco, but rarely can I fork up the “bones” to try the “super” Sangio-Cab blends, or even the Nebbiolo-based Borolos. I know I’m missing out here, but the wallet isn’t allowing me the option.

Embarassing holes in my wine-tasting history:
    Barolo/Barbaresco
    Châteauneuf-du-Pape
    Sauternes
    Super Tuscan

    Less embarassing holes:
    Muscadet
    Albarino

QOTD: Muscadet is definitely a shortcoming. Tokaji. I have had a bit (very small bit) of the major varieties from around the world. A lot of west coast wines, primarily because of availability (I am in CA). Current focus is on old world (focusing on France). Have not had much from Spain. None from Hungary, Greece, Baltics. No ice wines. Not much from Argentina. So, shortcomings everywhere :)

i think you will find that some of these Muscadets will actually improve with age. the Pepiere for sure because i know it well, but the others likely as well. i htink that this is simply the BEST value in white wine period. I’m glad you tried them; next time get a bit of age on them (even 2-3 years)and they will fill out.

QOTD: I’ve never had a Barolo, a Barbaresco, or a Brunello, so I guess I’ve really been neglecting Italian B’s. Of course, the prohibitive cost of these wines is a major factor. I’ve never had a hermitage either, but that looks entirely out of reach for a while. I’ll work through the others a little at a time.

The Pepiere Muscadet Sur Lie is my standard at home white wine. I find it pretty mineralish in addition to the greens. A perfect complement to food of the sea. I’d agree with the other comment that Gary should explain “sur lie”, it brings an almost frizzy quality to the wine.

I do believe at 1:53 you said “…breast values in the world.” I do like to see gary get sloshed! Sweet episode, though. A inexpensive white wine for me to try and not worry about breaking the bank while expanding my palate. QOTD: Never had a Red Bordeaux (have had some Sauternes), but own one that is cellaring and I plan on buying and cellaring some more. Hey Im changing the wine world!!!!

  185. June 24, 2009

Another varietal to be noted down on the list…by the way is this muscadet the same as muscat?

  186. July 1, 2009

QOTD – I have so many weaknesses, I don’t even want to discuss them. I tend to really focus on the things I like, and get know them in depth, to the exclusion of some other areas. Which is to say, this show, with its palate-expanding mantra, is made for me.

I’ll definitely put muscadet on my “to be tried” list.

@Adrian: Muscadet is definitely not muscat. Muscadet is made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape, and is usually made dry, while Muscat is made from the Muscat grape, and is often (but not always) used for sweeter wines. Search “muscat” and “muscadet” on wikipedia.
