Going back to the “Way Back” machine here,,, but opened the Clonakilla tonight and had to go back and “taste” with you… I got #1,2,4 of the episode a year ago and just getting to the Clonakilla tonight,,, You are right on on the bottles I got. This is such a great resource.
Thank you so much for taking part in my wine enjoyment! :-)

Interesting that you said that the ‘04 vintage wasn’t considered great. Out here, ‘04 was considered a very good vintage for the Barossa and most regions in the country. As for the Terlato/Chapoutier, any idea where that was from in Victoria (the state is larger in size than the UK)? Is it available in Aus?

Just tried the Teralto last night and really enjoyed it.

My current favorite Shiraz / Viog. blend is the d’Arenberg Laughing Magpie.

Just tried the Small Gully Mr. Black’s Concoction (my first web order from the Library). Thanks for the intro. Really enjoyed the wine. By the way, I had it with some lamb chops (with some french hand-harvested sea salt, and ground black pepper) and mushroom cous cous, and it was a good pair. So, I challenge the comment of “not great w/ food.”

QOTD: everyone seems to be thinking the red should dominate with a splash of white, but what about the other way around? 95% unoaked chardonnay + 5% grenache. It’d be pink and tasty.

Wow! After Monday’s show of PAZZZZZ, a nice comeback on “Tuesday” with this episode. I will seek out the Terlato/Chapoutier - sounds right up my alley.

QOTD: Having just returned from Spain, I am thinking that a Tempranillo or Carignana blended with either a Godello or Albarino would be intriguing giving the aromatics of each of the whites.

Great QOTD. How about Zin and Albarino?

Frankly, I’d love to blend every red out there with Reisling

QotD : How about a Cab Franc / Marsanne blend !
Or Cab Franc / Sauv Blanc just to keep it regional

Maybe Xarel-lo with Gamay and make a bubbly out of it…

Nice show Gary. I have enjoyed the Shiraz/Viognier blends that I’ve had, and appreciate learning about different producers of that varietal blend.

Question: You referred to 2005 as a classic vintage. Perhaps a naïve question, but can a vintage just two years ago be classic already?

QOTD: Though these blends often show up in a Meritage, I would like to taste a blend of a Zinfandel and Grenache or Petit Verdot. I think the jammy, fruit flavors of either the Grenach or Petit Verdot would be a nice complement to the rich flavors of a Zin.

Great show Gary! I will definitely seek out some of these blends.

QOTD: How about Syrah / Gewurztraminer? The two both have spicy notes, why not? I don’t think anyone has mentioned this one, but I could be wrong.

After watching this episode, I was inspired to try a Syrah-Viognier blend I had in my cellar. It was the 2005 Laurent Miquel “Nord Sud” (92% Syrah, 8% Viognier)from Languedoc-Roussillon. It wouldn’t be mistaken for a Cote Rotie, but it was very nice — old world Syrah flavors with a certain floral something from the Viognier. And it only cost $12. It didn’t have the intensity to get the big scores, but I liked it.
