Gary – I was getting caught up on some of the back episodes and ran into this one. Your brother AJ is awesome!!! You should have him on the show again.

QOTD: I have 2 older sisters, one lives in Maine and the other in San Diego and they are both awesome. My sister in Maine, her husband’s job title is “Chief Lobster Biologist”, how AWESOME is that?!?!

Just watched this and was laughing out loud. I can’t tell you how many people that I know who taste wine and have the exact reaction as your bro. Also, great family dynamic with you two.
Keep tasting AJ, you will soon be hooked

Dare I say classic episode? How fun to watch AJ get nothing on the wines. Im damn sure ( even sometimes today ) the first wine you would have shoved under my snoot I would have said “alcohol” as well. Im happy to see he had a good experience overall and I hope hes trying new wines to this day. Happy 21st, AJ! QOTD: Only child, which is a good thing if you know me.

lol gary this episode is great. i just turned 21 august 15th and im new to wine so i really dont pick up on the flavors tooo much. . so i can totally feel for AJV. untrained palates. . but im sure NOW hes better at it. . as i will soon be hopefully. . but the other day i had a kendall jackson Cab i think it was and i got a bit of a fruit from it and the more it opened up in my glass i kinda picked up on a chocolate flavor smell kinda thing from it. . it was interesting

Great show. Could have used this show last year for my 21st.

QOTD: I’m the oldest of my siblings.

This is coming about 5 months late, but I just saw this episode and wanted to tell AJ “it’s all good” because I don’t taste all those different flavors in the wines either and I’ve had way more than 4 wimpy glasses of it! :) No hard feelings! Though I’m sure by now you’ve had plenty of wine-experience, AJ. I guess we need to go lick some rocks and eat some dirt before we’ll be tasting like your big bro. Oh well! Keep trying!

Nice job AJ and hapy B-day.
Intersting that GV picked out a wine with your birth year for just this occasion.
I have done this for my kids and I have 1990 Chave Hermitage, 1991 Beringer Private Reserve, 1995 Insignia or Lynch-Bages, and 1998 Mouton Rothschilde.

QOTD – My older sister Lucy is my rockin’ sib. She is an attorney in NYC with an IQ off the charts. She likes to taste wine and share experiences with family!

GARY: I know you’re always complaining about lurkers, and I’m sure you’ve heard my excuse before (I watch on iTunes many days later [I sort of binge] and thus am always off-time), but I just needed to let you know that I literally e-mailed this ep to my mother and said “get me those first two for July 8th” (my 21st). I’m torn between seeking out sugar cane and all those things and seeing what they smell like beforehand. Maybe I’ll just get with the whole “training your palate” program beforehand.

QOTD: I’m the elder, and AJ, I sort of want to set you up with my sister, who is 18.

Great ep. I have a feeling that AJV is the only American whose first wine was a Gruner Veltliner, something most people have never heard of (I’ll have the Chardonnay please!).

Regrettably, I’m the only youth in the house.

QOTD: I have an older brother, who despite himself, is pretty awesome. He did tune me into tv.winelibrary.com … that has to count for something.

    Just catching up….
QOTD: No I am the oldest but my younger sister is one of my best friends in the world and I even like her husband too ;)

Great episode Gary. Must say that I like the family idea. Too bad my little bro is so worried about himself and not being like his big brother that he has missed out on some great opportunities. Happy late birthday AJ.

great idea for a show. Happy belated 21st to AJ.

A.J., don’t be intimidated with the descriptors that Gary throws out. It is something that is learned over time. He would absolutely be the first one to say have fun with wine, experiment and think as you drink. I don’t mean “think” like “be reponsible” (but do that some too) but think about what is in the glass. The color, the flavors of the aromas and tastes (fruit, herbal, vegetal, meaty, wood and mineral components), the level of intensity. Enjoy the ride.

Great show! Love seeing the new palate react to wines – was an eye opener for me.

QOTD: I have an older brother, who does not, unfortunately, have a cool-ass wine show on the internets.

    Awesome show! Happy B-day AJ.
QOD: I have an older bro, and he thinks he’s as awesome, but I’m not so sure! :)

    CHATrBox

Great show! Happy Birthday to your bro. A great look at the first steps into wine.

My 21-run was a little different. There was definitely some heat…but that was more from the Prairie Fires!

QOTD: Yes, but not even close on the awesome scale.

    Valerie

QOTD: I have one older sister, and she WAS way cool back when I was in college, but now, not so much…a lot changes in 12 years!

Loved the show, and I agree with the previous poster, bring AJ back ocassional to to another Wine 101…I can feel the love!!!!
