Early show today. How am I supposed to be top 5 if you throw off the times?! :)

Great to see a bubbly show. I’ve been wanting to learn more about it.

QOTD: In 1996 my husband and I went to France. We were wine drinkers but didn’t know much about the wines of the world. One day we drove into a village and we sat at a cafe reading our travel books. That’s when we realized we were somewhere incredible. We were in Gevrey-Chambertin. We had the best afternoon tasting incredible wines in people’s basements/cellars. We’ve remained huge fans of Burgundy while we continue to expand our palates.

During that same trip to France, we went to Champagne, Loire, Alsace…….and more.

QOTD: Mine was also with a girl – my girlfriend got really stoked the first time she had the ‘05 MD Boxer. It’s definitely not everyone’s wine, but it was the first time she got really excited about a wine I bought. It was really cool to share that.

Favourite wine moment was having my first taste of 2000 Bordeaux with friends for my 40th birthday.

Matt was a good WLTV-guest-taster – comfortable, authentic and not the least bit nervous or self-conscious on the show. Congrats on the MD! Good choice with the bubbly and a nice cross-section of bottle choices.
Gary- thanks for mentioning the Gruet tasting-room PR. No matter how good the product, wine is about people – and the Gruet folks have created for themselves a reputation of consistently providing an unpleasant, snooty, and often downright RUDE tasting experience for guests (customers!!) visiting their tasting room in Albuquerque. In this day and age of service??? There’s a LOT of good cava out there for the price (or less) of Gruet’s offerings – I like buying local and/or USA products, but those folks need to handle their customer relations WAY better. We have lots of choices and don’t have to give our business to endorse a product whose producers make us feel bad!

QOTD: My favorite wine moment was with my wife – we had a 2001 Chateau de Pez with a meal. It was one of those epiphany-type moments for her where she exclaimed “This, THIS is the perfect red wine”.

  18. May 12, 2008

I love bubbly, which flows into my answer of the QOTD.

Every Christmas Eve, after my two daughters go to bed and the presents are under the tree, my wife and I share a bottle of bubbly. She and the girls are the best gifts in my life.

Didn’t expect you on so early, nice, I get to watch while I’m fully awake and it’s still light outside!

Matt seems a natural, good guest, relaxed and funny.

QOTD – My two most recent birthdays, where Sarah went Above & Beyond in finding wines that fitted in with exactly where I was at the time – last year wines from 1967 to match my 40th birthday, this year wines from 2 countries I didn’t have (India & Uruguay) as I continue my globe-trotting purchases.

    Good Luck on Conan!

    Excellent show!

Why not have a mirror on the wall behind you then we can see Mott :-)

QOTD … It’s on 2 separate occasions recently, but it is the same. Local wine shop brought some wines over from BAVA and on another day Chateau Margaux.

After tasting and enjoying wines for a few years, my “pal” certainly went up a gear tasting these wines and could really enjoy them for the their complexities.

QOTD: Had my girlfriend and another couple over in college and opened a bottle of 2003 Hayman & Hill pinot noir and my room instantly filled with the scent of fresh flowers. It was really incredible and all four of us could smell it. I’m usually the one calling out smells but this was so strong and so distinctive that we were all able to enjoy it together. Thanks, vino!

Qotd: the ‘95 La Grande Dame Veuve that my wife and I popped after our wedding reception in our room after the crazy/wonderful day. It tasted amazing but at that moment..anything was bound to be incredible. Awesome show- I love the guest shows, as well as the bubbly episodes! Have fun on Conan!

Definitely a fan of guests. I think instead of a simul-cast of mott, you should do a Mott confessional. His true feelings on the wines you make him taste, and everything else that is WLTV.

QOTD: Last night in Vienna after running around Eastern Europe with two friends from highschool. Ordered some random bottles of red wine and reminisced. Couldn’t even tell you exactly what we drank, but good times, good food, great friends, and wine . . . could you ask for much more?

  26. May 12, 2008

QOTD: So many! Quaffing Beaujolais Nouveau as a student in France in 1983. Discovering Gewurztraminer on a balmy spring evening on holiday in Alsace in 2000. A New Zealand sauvignon blanc at a dinner with my then fiancee in the late 80s. The list goes on.

  27. May 12, 2008

    Eric G

Love the bubbles. Love the small grower’s, which are also a value when you consider that a 1988 Dom P that goes for over $300 is probably not any better than the $100 1988 De Venoge.

QOTD: Before flying home from Paris four years ago my girlfriend and I stocked up on great cheese, cold meat, pâté, bread and wine. We smuggled it all on the plane and had an amazing meal. The wine tasted fantastic. We were very happy on a crowded flight that would have been miserable if we had to eat the airplane food and drink their wine.

QOTD: Sitting around the kitchen table at my mother’s house catching up with my friends, three years ago. We had all been on around the world adventures and there’s nothing like seeing old friends – we were sneaking some CNDP from mom’s cellar IIRC.

Best beer moment: Drinking Arrogant Bastard IPA, Smoked Porter, and 750’s of warm La Fin du Monde north of Banff in the Yukon, camping with my friends. We were grilling veggies, without the use of tongs and it was bear season…

the other day i was thinking about where in hell are the contest winners? presto!

qotd: there are so many, and not enough. i can say my most recent one. i had some friends over a few weeks ago. they like wine, like everyone, but are not really into it. so, we had 3 bottles already, a real nice swiss white wine ( we live in switzerland), a 2001 GC riesling from alsace that was getting there, then with our veal, we had a disappointing 03 savigny les beaune 1er cru. at this point, the 4 of us are a little loopy. i look at my friend delphine and say, do you want something real good? did you ever have gevrey chambertin? so i took her downstairs to the cellar and we picked out a 02 gevrey chambertin.
the moment i guess was when she still had the mediocre savigny in her glass and i gave her a whiff of my gevrey. she just said wow! it was that moment of discovery for her, and sharing for me that made it. the bottle was good. brimming with deep dark fruit, traces of dirt. it was being with friends, drinking good stuff, and laughing.

Good QOTD! About five years ago my brother and I had a private tour of Mondavi with several tastings along the way of their best stuff and ending with a fabulous lunch with four different wines. It was a beautiful day with a lot of really good wine. And sharing it with my big brother was the best!

QOTD: 13 years ago was walking through the liquor store with a girl that I really wanted to bang and as I was going to grab some Ruffino Gold label she goes- I love this so I am thinking great got to get 3 bottles now- still less than getting a hooker so what the heck- but turns out she was oogling the Carlo Rossi Paisano- Grabbed the handle on the gallon and smiled all the way to the register!

  35. May 12, 2008

    Jay

Great show. Guest was really relaxed which was nice to see. Good job.

I’m curious though… Both of you were swirling those sparklers pretty hard. Whenever I crack any type of bubbly, I want to preserve as many bubbles as possible and just let the escaping bubbles bring up the aromatics. Thoughts/reasons as to why you think swirling is better?

QOTD: Sitting outside at a winery in Lake Chelan in the heat of the summer, eating a little cheese, and hanging out with friends.

    Good QOTD.

QOTD: I was in a Wine Appreciation class at the local community college. We were doing a Malbec tasting when the teacher brought out some brie cheese. The Malbec by itself was good but for me, the pairing of the Malbec and Brie was…. well it was just incredible. I had an “A HA!” moment and I finally understood how food and wine can enhance each other.

  40. May 12, 2008

    Neil

QOTD: Kicking back at the Fairmont in SF after our wedding with my Julie sipping Pacific Echo (now Scharfenberger Brut) which was a freebie that came with the room. I never had it before but after being a good groom, greeting all of the out of town guests, in laws, ect., and only having a glass or two the whole evening it was nice to relax and refresh with a sparkler. I’ll always remember sneaking away from all of the obligations and finally enjoying a quite moment with my new wife. Sappy? Maybe, but a memory nontheless and it didn’t matter that it wasn’t Dom P or Crystal or all of the high end plonk that Gary V likes to sip at PerSe. La Dee Da! Sory Gary, but you are an elitist when it comes to bubbly.

Fun show today, great to hear that Matt is headed to the best part of the country – Go Irish! QOTD: my best wine moment was probably my vacation to Napa and Sonoma with my two best girl friends, kickin it at Cline winery with our host for the day, Joe. Keep it real.

Nice episode today! Congrats Matt, what a great accomplishment! Big day today/tomorrow! Conan on tonight/”early tomorrow morning” and the book comes out TOMORROW! Man oh man I’m excited….

    I don’t have a response to QOTD yet… not 21.

Also, I sent an URGENT URGENT URGENT email about this, but if you could give my Dad (Ed Sherman) a big birthday shout-out this Friday, May 16, that would be awesome!!!

Thanks GV — I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight! Maybe I’ll watch some reruns of WLTV…

QOTD: Haven’t really had any wine moments, but sitting in my favorite restaurant with a nice little chianti does the trick nicely!
If you get down to Dublin sometime check out a little place called Pizza Stop. Sounds modest, but they make the most ridiculously good pizza on Earth! No joking- better than any in Italy!

    Great Show!!!

Congrats Matt on the completing med school.

QOTD: Best wine moment was probably back in October ‘07 when I visited Napa and did the Del Dotto Tour. The guy heading the tour and the people on that specific cave tour were all a blast and we ended up enjoyin all different del dotto cabs for the hour and a half.

QOTD: I have quite a few favorite wine moments, but for some reason the memory that is coming to mind right now is of me visiting my best friend in New Mexico. I hadn’t seen her in a couple of years and was there for just a few days. My flights had been miserable and I arrived much later than expected, but she had pasta, bread, and a glass of something red and Italian waiting for me. We sipped wine out on her back deck and watched the last vestiges of the sun setting over the desert mountains. As the heat left the air, and my glass of wine emptied, my body began to relax into that comfortable feeling of being with my best buddy. That feeling of Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh…. is incredible.

  48. May 12, 2008

    Lau

QOTD: I’ve got a few I’m wobbling between, but I think I’m going to go with the trip to Florence last year with my girlfriend. We had a crisp white wine on the side of a mountain in by a little village called Fiesole with stunning view of Florence. We had some Italian salamis and the waiter was just great, bought a 2001 Tenuta la Fuga Brunello from the guy at a very fair price. All-in-all very memorable.

Btw, I’ll be turning 26 tomorrow, closing in on the 30! Argh!

Wow! Awesome show. Where do I start. Great guest. Great wine. GV showing the love by breakin out the $$$ bottle. I like it!

Matt’s QOTD: Inspiration (small Sonoma, CA winery) I am friends with a friend of the owner. Group of us did catered box lunch in the vineyard under a walnut tree and tasted the the wines served to us by the owner/winemaker. Beautiful, suuny 80 degree California day. Good food. Good wine. Heaven.

QOTD: probably a few years ago when my dad set up a blind tasting of a late 70s Napa cab against a late 70s bordeaux with a group of european friends and they all preferred the Napa cab…great night and both great wines although I don’t remember the specific producers (the bordeaux may have been 78 lafite rothschild)

  52. May 12, 2008

Each one is better than the last!

Thanks Matt – sparkling wines are fun. As regards Gary’s comment, I’m surprised that anyone had a bad experience at Gruet. It wasn’t some of your college crew kids tromping in barefoot was it? Gruet is kind of a classy place. Tell them to speak to Scott if they’re having any problems – it’s his job to make everyone happy.

QOTD: an interesting question that brought back a moment from the past. Several years ago some girlfriends and I spent a couple of days at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and Spa – it was in the winter and during the day we hopped from spring to spring – mostly outdoors – alternating between being wet and cold and wet and warm, I remember being wrapped in warm towels and falling asleep on a table in a little room. Then, we went back to our room, and one of my friends poured a bottle of Jordan cab – I can’t remember the year, but she had had it for some time, and it was as though I had shuffeled a deck of cards made out of berries and flowers – the aromas kept alternating and shifting – it was mesmerizing.

Congratulations on being on WLTV! One of the best Vayniac appearances I’ve seen!

Oh, and that Med school thing too.

QOTD: On a trip to Wisconcin, in an unseasonably warm January, having a bottle I don’t even remember, with some cheese, sitting outside (no joke, it was like 70 degrees, in WISCONSIN, in JANUARY), watching bald eagles fly overhead and in the trees over the vineyards.

  55. May 12, 2008

    chenrys

    Congratulations, Matt! Fun show.

QOTD: Carl and I went to a Pinot Noir wine tasting in a park with a really fun group of people, wines from around the world. They were all ok wines but the group was very friendly and fun – someone brought chocolate to share. Then this guy breaks out a $300 burgundy…it was awesome. Such a fun experience and good company.

Congrats, Matt on the med school.

QOTD: I made a great birthday dinner for my girl last fall and served it with an Albarino and she loved it and I knew that I was developing my tastes way beyond anything it had ever been before.

    Nice show…

QOTD: August 2007 Friday night- staying in a loft studio on Vanderbilt Lane in Hyde Park with french doors overlooking a stunning courtyard in the country, crickets chirping, warm air and with ceiling fans moving slowly, the smell of wildflowers in the air, Sting playing in the background, sipping on Mollydooker Two Left Feet and writing well into the night.

Great show today!!! Some guys have all the luck.
QOTD- The first time I actually tasted at a winery my wife and I rode the motorcycle three hours down to Canon City. On the ride home we rode through a downpour that turned to hail. But in retrospect it was one of the memorable wine tastings I have had to this day.

  62. May 12, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

My favorite wine moment was the first bottle of serious, not Mateuse, wine I bought at 22 years old. It was a St. Emilion and as I left the store it was raining and the bottle slipped out of my hand and broke at the store entrance. I was deflated completely and the owner came out with another of the same bottle and handed it to me. One of my best all time moments and he made a friend for life. I went to his funeral last year and I never will forget him. And the wine a Figeac ‘66 was amazing. I still purchase them. Great guest and congratulations on your accomplishment.

  63. May 12, 2008

    John Farrin

QOTD: The same moment that, fortunately, has happened many, many times. It’s the look of surprise and amazement that passes over a person’s face immediately after they’ve taken their first sip of a new, exoiting wine that I have introduced them to.

    Staying up for Conan!

  64. May 12, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

Matt, congrats … both on med. school and on the trip to Wine Lib. / drinking bubbly with GV.

QoTD: The moment I discovered my love for Sangiovese in northern Italy while sitting outside one evening having a chat with some colleagues from around the world. I felt so fortunate to be enjoying such great wine with such brilliant minds.

  65. May 12, 2008

    Brad

Alright. While watching this video and you mentioning Conan I realized something. You NEED to be on SNL! I can imagine an SNL skit while you’re trying to educate some people on tasting wines but they keep coming up with wrong answers or just act like morons. Get your people in touch with Lorne’s people. This needs to happen.

QOTD: One of my favorite wine moments would have to be with Gary V & friends at Bern’s in Tampa! Birth year wines people!

A close second though…would be just about any bottle I open with friends and family. I remember them al…last one Jayson Napa Red, Mother’s Day!

  68. May 12, 2008

    LuvsChandon

Staying up on the Left Coast for CONAN tonite!

QOTD: Tasting at Sierra Grove with Dr Joe on a quiet Thursday afternoon in Napa. Pourer was a very personable young man into the wine he was serving us, had my best cab to date, and some really fun fun conversation on wine and other topics, a wine and a moment I will NEVER forget.

    Great show, love the bubbly!

  69. May 12, 2008

    Kristen

Nice show today. And congrats to Matt for graduating med school! You definitely deserve the bubbly!

QOTD: (great question by the way) Other than my W.A.S.T.E.D. meetings here in Madison, my favorite wine experience had to be in France in the tiny village of Monflaquin. I was on a horseback riding trip through the southwest of France during high school and we stopped for lunch (bien sûr). We started drinking a red wine with lunch and it was the first time I had ever drank a red wine that I liked. But I had to stop so I wouldn’t “drive” drunk….I had 20 more kilometers to go that day!

Great show. Congrats Matt! Gary, I really laughed at your comment about the snootiness of the people at Gruet.. they’re awful! I live in New Mexico so Gruet is very popular around these parts, but I will no longer take my guests to see the winery when they visit. Tell you what, Gary… when you come to Albuquerque on your book tour (wink, wink)… we’ll be happy to take you there and see what you think. Maybe you can talk some sense into those snobby SOB’s!

QOTD — I’ve had many great wine moments, but they are usually not about the wine but about the place and the people. My favorite bubbly memory, though is from Buenos Aires and a fabulous wine shop called Terroir. The owner graciously invited my husband and I to a party there. Nobody spoke much English and we had a blast! It was all champagne and the grand finale was Dom P. I don’t remember the champagnes at all, but the night was unforgettable.

my moment was: doing a switcheroo @ the U-Scan at the grocery store with any 2 dollar bottle of wine and a bottle of 70 bone stag’s leap artemis (scan the 2 dollar bottle twice, and slip the extravagant one in the bag). decanted for an hour and knocked back at a buddy of mine’s apartment. good times. (Don’t try this at home &/or ruin the trick for the rest of us!!)

Just so you know, the podcast version of this episode was messed up. When I tried to play it through iTunes it wouldn’t work, when I tried using Quicktime that didn’t work, using VLC, the video dies at the 12:40 mark, so now I’m trying to watch from the website.

Mott, you gotta do something about this for the people who want to download and watch this later in the week.

Love the show guys, see you at Bounce, I’m be there tonight!

Matt youre pretty cool…and how awesome that you pulled-out a romantic wine moment as your best!

QOTD: My best wine moments so far have been both a romantic setting and times with friends ..once while lost in Spain at night, walking along the train tracks with friends..drinking, laughing..and freaking out!!!!

Actually, I think we’re always searching for the best wine moment, every time we open a new bottle!

QOTD – my favorite moment has to be when I took a two week trip to south america last summer. I was having dinner in a small restaurant in Rio de Janeiro with four of my best friends and I bought a bottle of cabernet sauvignon to go along with a plate of seafood pasta. I can’t remember the producer, but I just remember it being one of the best bottles of wine I’ve ever had.

Another interesting episode. Of course he picked an expensive bottle! I would have as well. How often do you get to sample FREE $100 bubbly?

QOTD – Graduation dinner last week with family. The dinner was excellent but the Merlot sucked.

Gary – I’ve got the TiVo set to record Conan and I’ll be watching it as well!

great show gary! Can’t wait to see you rip it tonight on Conan.
QOTD- my favorite wine experience was when I took my first trip up to the fingerlakes on my 21st birthday. I tried somewhere in the ballpark of 60 wines and eneded up with a tremendous hangover at 4pm in the afternoon!!! haha

Excellent episode with the Doc! Congrats to you completing Med school, you were fun to have on the show. Can’t wait to see you Gary on Conan, but it’ll have to wait till tomorrow, it’s just too late for me having to get up at 4:45 to go to work like I usually do. Best wine moment was camping with Edie and having a Moscato D’Asti in front of the camp fire before we ever got very serious about wine. Still our favorite type of wine. Thanks for everything Gary! Oh and by the way, I see Amazon shipped 2 things to me today and I’m excited to read them :)

QOTD: It was with a girl, on her birthday. Neither of us knew anything about wine, but we had some great cheese out (I believe it was ossau-iraty, manchego, and possibly dubliner), a loaf of ciabatta, and some fruits. We had picked out two wines – mostly for their labels. ‘05 Cycles Gladiator Pinot, and ‘04 Barrel Monkeys Shiraz (McLaren Vale). We opened the pinot first, and found it soft, light, and pleasant. Sitting in the dimming light on summer evening, with the descending sun entertaining us through a window, I cared less and less about the world outside that room. When we opened the Barrel Monkeys, I was taken aback! While the pinot seemed to be one, pleasant flavor, the shiraz was deep and dark, and changed as it ran over my tongue. By now the light had become appropriately dusky, and I imagined a cool Persian night, with perfumed breezes and rustling dunes… and a campfire (I smelled smoke in the wine). We talked late into the night.

——Duplicate of an Email I sent:—————-
    Subject: 1947 Cheval Blanc
    Dear Gary,

I’m curious: Have you had the ‘47 Cheval Blanc, and what was your experience? I’ve read that it is “technically” flawed, with low acidity, high residual sugar, and excessive volatile acidity, but that somehow it works transcendentally! Did it knock your socks off?

Maybe you could do a show where you simply talk about a few great wines that stand out in your memory – the circumstances, with whom you drank them. It could be the first wine-less WLTV show!

*Great Show Gary! You Totally Rock!!!

I was in Germany for an Orchestra tour and one family I stayed with brought out a bottle of wine to go with dessert. I don’t even remember what it was (possibly a rarely seen stateside red Rhine?). The taste was rich, complex and paired well with chocolate. Most importantly, I was able to spend the moment with some great German people.

    Congrats on med school!

QOTD: March 2006 I was traveling through southern Italy with some friends from architecture school and on our last night in I Sassi, Matera we decided to stay up all night to climb through the gorge at the edge of the town. Around 4:30 AM we stopped halfway down one side of the ravine and we broke out some random bottle of white wine, and laid on the rocks looking up at the shadowy silhouette of the Sassi above and a church carved out of a pinacle of rock. We stayed there in complete silence, listening to the river at the bottom of the gorge, passing around the bottle of wine. There was nothing to be said for the moment. When we decided to move on, I took the empty bottle, wrote our names and the date on it, and placed it a niche in the rock face rising above us.

QOTD–Luckily for me, my best wine moment lasted about 3 days…

What I remember of it goes like this…Visiting family in San Diego, my wife and I left our daughter with the inlaws and flew into San Fran, rented a convertible and took off for Napa and Sonoma. Stopped for lunch at the Oakville Grocery, visited a couple of wineries nearby (Groth and Silver Oak, I think). We then took a twisting, winding road (The Oakville Grade maybe?) to our next stop, which was Landmark Vineyards. Had tour of the winery with the director marketing, sampled a little wine and checked into our room at Landmark. Had dinner at a little restaurant near the winery and went back to the winery for the night. Played Bocce Ball until it got too dark to see. The next morning we took off and hit several other wineries that I don’t remember. I remember trying to go to the tasting room at Rodney Strong, but they didn’t open until 10am. What’s wrong with a wine tasting for breakfast? I think we also hit Seghesio that morning. The we had lunch and tour (with barrel tasting) at Chateau Souvrain. After that it was off to Jordan for another tour and lodging for the evening. (If you ever look at the label, the far right windows on the 2nd floor of the winery is where we stayed. Our room had a view into the barrel room. I didn’t get much sleep that night. I kept trying to figure out how to get in there! Before retiring back at Jordan, we had dinner at the Healdsburg Charcuterie–Wow!!! The next day we headed back to Napa, visited several more tasting rooms, including Grgich and Kunde. Lunch was at the La Famiglia winery (Mondavi) on a terrace overlooking an olive grove. After a tasting at Opus One, we had a private tour at Mondavi, which included a tasting which included Tok a lon vineyard I-Block Sauvignon Blanc (Maybe fume blanc?). Anyway, we headed to the FEDEX in Napa to ship the wine home. After 3 days of amazing food and even better wine, we were really in the mood for something different…McDonalds it was!

As an amazing final note, when I returned to work on Tuesday, we hosted a wine dinner featuring Rodney Strong. He was an amazingly funny man.

Sorry it was so long, but I wrapped up just in time to turn Conan on!

    Congrats on finishing med school!

    QOTD:
Well, I am only 19, so my story may be lacking in class and grace, but it has heaps of awesome to make up for that.
Basically it was (Canadian) Thanksgiving weekend of last year, and my friend’s dad had just had his 50th birthday the day before. A bunch of us went up to finish off the keg from the previous night’s celebrations. Unfortunately there wasn’t a whole lot left so we finished the keg with only a small buzz (most of us at least). So this one guy (the drunkest one there I might add) disappears, and comes back with a bottle of red wine, no idea what kind, from Peller Estates if I were to guess. Anyways, he’s all riled up and he’s telling us “come on guys, we gotta finish this fast” and so we get in a circle, throw our hands in the middle, let out a cheer. Then we start chugging the wine straight from the bottle in succession. In I would say under a minute the bottle was done. We ended up doing the same thing to another bottle maybe 30 minutes later.
Basically, it was a pretty epic night and started what would become pretty regular ‘wine seshes’ as we call them. This is actually what got me into wine, and by consequence, winelibrarytv, which in turn got me into wines a bit more seriously. I still partake in wine seshes obviously, but now I also drink wine outside of that environment, and from a wine glass instead of a wine bottle.

QOTD: My favorite Wine Moment is always on going. What I mean is… I could say things like, the time I went to epernay and had Champagne where it was born, or when I was in Chianti barrel tasting in a Castle, but what I think is so special about Wine is the fact that just about every time you open a bottle of Wine it’s potentionaly a Wine Moment.

QOTD: First Thanksgiving after I got married (about 13 years ago). Had my family in for dinner. Wife cooked a great meal– four wines from a small local wine shop. The owner took alot of time with us picking the wine for the meal based upon what was being served. She hit it out of the park with her selections.

QOTD: I went to a tasting at this little hole in the wall restaurant (since closed) in southwestern Mass with my wife. We weren’t expecting much and it turned out to be a three hour party with something like 40 wines, many very good, and a heck of a cheese and raw bar spread. We walked away with several cases that day, much to my wife’s conservative buying nature. Sometimes you just find the sweetness.

  120. May 13, 2008

QOTD: My favourite wine moment relates to when I first got into wine. I was at a business dinner a few years ago and until that point I had been drinking red wine just out of obligation. I didn’t actually like it, but I did not want to look unsophisticated. The top executive at the table ordered a bottle of red Burgundy to go with dinner, and I was blown away by how good the wine was on its own and how perfectly it paired with the food. That’s when I realized that there was something more to wine & food pairings! My only regret is not getting the name of the producer or the vintage.

QotD: At Le Grotto, an upscale restaurant in Montepulciano, Tuscany. I knew nothing about wine and my wife didn’t drink wine at the time so I ordered the only thing I came close to recognizing, a half bottle of Ruffino Chianti. The sommelier could tell I knew not the first about wines, or I’d've surely ordered something else [perhaps a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Signor Dumbass?] but he decanted it with flair and treated me just like any other customer.

The moment that comes to mind was an early date with a long time love of mine. We met in Central Park and shared a bottle of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc and then went over to the Burger Bar at Le Parker Merdian Hotel (if you haven’t been , its a must – a totally dive burger bar with rock music and fantastic burgers in the middle of a super fancy mirrored hotel) – she is Spanish and completely in love with Champagne and Cava, and it was the perfect afternoon enchanting her with America.

  124. May 13, 2008

QOTD: My moment actually has to do with sparkling wine. When I was 19, my dad and I were on a trip in Chianti. During this trip, I tried to “acquire” the taste for wine. My dad loved it, and it seemed like perfect bonding if only I liked wine. But every night, I would nurse my glass while my dad enjoyed his. One day we got really lost driving around chianti and we ended up on the top of a hill where there was a restaurant. We were starving, but since it was August, many places were closed. (They seem to just take to whole month off). I went up to the door to see if it was open, but the place was empty. I turned around to walk about the car, and the waiter came running out, insisting that they were open. We got in and we were immediately served a glass of sparkling wine, on the house. There we were the only people in this huge fancy restaurant. And as my dad tells the story, by the time he put his menu down, my glass was empty. I don’t remember what it was, but it was delicious. The meal was great, and since then I have happily acquired the taste for wine =).

Gary- ever think about drinkin your bubbly in the BIG ASS glass or at least a burgundy glass. I always seem to get much more enjoyment from my sparklers this way as opposed to with the flutes. Just sayin.

QOTD: I’ve had so many……definitely traveling in CA Wine country. Managed to find a wine that was sold-out at the winery in a little country market. While grilling some fantastic corn and burgers, I cracked open a bottle of the ‘99 Young’s Zinfandel and poured a glass. Upon tasting it, I screamed in delight and called my husband in to have a glass–he went head over heels for it also. This is one of our fondest wine moments ever. You don’t have to visit Napa to have a great wine vacation in CA.

QoTD: Most definately would have to be this past Wednesday. My room mate, a culinary student at Kendall (where I also went, recent graduate) had won, a week ago, $20000 in a culinary student competition here in Chicago. So to celebrate, we did a little dinner party for our closest friends at our place. A four course menu – we collaberated on the food, I handled the wine. First up Chilled Papaya and Carrot Consomme w/Coconut milk foam; pair: 2006 Richard Hamilton “Daisy’s” Viognier – McLaren Vale AU. Second, House Smoked Seared Yellowfin Tuna, Braised Rainbow Chard, Herbed Polenta Cake w/Pomodoro Sauce; pair: (my personal all time favorite wine) 2005 Land’s Edge Pinot Noir – Sonoma Coast. Third (and the star of the evening), a modified version of the winning recipe: Dijon Crusted Lamb Loin w/Goat Cheese and Squash Parfait & Sauce Romesco de Mostaza (awesome stuff!); pair: 2003 Mitolo “Savitar” Shiraz – McLaren Vale, AU. Fourth, Banana Cigarettes w/Basil Ganache and Strawberry Mochi; pair: Bugey Cerdon NV.

Even though this all sounds great and was insanely fun to try to do out of a small home kitchen (try plating four courses for 8 people, a la minute, pour the wine, entertain and clean as you go!) none of that was really the special part. It was about the people! Thats what wine (and food!) should be about! So we all dined and drank like kings and queens then watched the new episode of Top Chef: Chicago and had some REALLY interesting discussions!

    Two moments:

We went off for our Official Engagement weekend, picnicing in New Hampshire and he swapped the $18 bottle (this is back in ‘87 – a pricey wine for us) for the $30 Silver Oak – wow!

In Italy for our honeymoon, we’re trying to find the Masi vineyards – the grapes are all around us, can’t find the vineyard. See a modest house, mid 20th century, nothing special, a sign says VINO tacked up to a tree in front. We pull in, this old Italian man comes around. We speak no Italian, he speaks no English. We use sign language and point at phrases in the little phrase book to communicate throughout. He motions us along the side, picks up three tumblers from under his outside tap, we go into the cellar. He sucks on the straw of one of those straw covered glass barrel-sized jars and pours wine into each of our glasses. We salute and drink, buy a bottle, and have memories I’ll never forget.

QOTD – Earlier this year, went to a fine locally run restaurant in the Finger Lakes – they served up a simple Cab from the area – really nice – all amped up by the atmosphere. Nice show… My favorite wine moment was on a rainy day when traveling in France. We were camping and it was raining and we were under a sheltered picnic table area with a bunch of other travelers. We were grilling portobello mushrooms and drinking red wine from a non-desrcript bottle. Don’t know what the wine was but the moment was great.

    Hey Mr. GV

Thanks for yet a super show – great to see some bubbles :-)
    (please MORE bubbles/champagne-shows!!!)

QOTD: I sort of agree with Greg B. about wine being a single, constantly developing and continuing experience, filled with small intermediates of very special experiences which intertwine over time.

Yet some experiences do stand out, now that I think about it:

Not so long ago I was attending a port-tasting with a good friend of mine, at our local wine-shop. We tasted our way through nearly thirty ports (both tawnys, colheitas, rubys, whites and older vintage). At the end of the evening, my friend and I were almost the last ones left – we still sat trying to analyse some of the particularly outstanding elder vintage ports. The owner of the wine-shop, who is a good friend of mine and a very capable wine professional, and one of his employees came over to us and sat down. They had brought a little half bottle of quality brut NV champagne, to finish of the evening. However this bottle didn’t last very long, and soon my friend and I were sent into the shop itself to retrieve a variety of champagnes: Grand Reserve, Premier cru, Premier Cuvee and vintage 98′ and 99′. So the four of us ended up drinking many bottles of serious champagne, talking and laughing into the wee hours of the night :-)

I with my girlfriend of 4 years here in washington state took her up to Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands. We shopped around that day and picked up groceries for a dinner at sunset at the same time picking up a bottle of White Wine, now Gary i’m with you on the room temp for white wine, however my girlfriend likes it chilled. The only problem was it had sat in the back of my car for almost 4 hours in 90degree heat. How was i supposed to cool it down for her? well we got to the beach and I immediately grabbed the bottle tied a string around the neck of the bottle and completely submerged it in the icy cold water for the next hour! it came out perfect! she was happy and we got to enjoy our very romantic dinner at sunset in beautiful Lopez Island!

Great job on Conan last night. As the third guest, you’re a bit rushed but you made the most of it. I’d be upset with Conan except for the fact that he lets you come on in the first place.

    To JudeMurphy (post below),

This is why severely left leaning liberals are a mess. Just because you have an opinion/belief about something, doesn’t mean you get to ram it down others throats. In this case, I happen to agree with you but why do you feel you need to strong arm others? You don’t like how foi gras is made, then don’t eat it. But, to each his own. What’s next Kobe beef? Lamb? I respect your opinion but would respect it more if you didn’t try to use it as a weapon.

PROPS FOR GETTING NEW MEXICO WINE ON THE SHOW!!!!! But it is true, the people at Gruet are elitist jerks. Seriously, they (except for the youngest guy in the family wholesaling the wine)are jerks and are not nice….at all.

QOTD: October, 2005, in the town of Monterosso, Italy, in a little cafe on the beach with my wife, with a plate of anchovies and lemon, we had a glass of vermentino or pigato. It doesn’t matter which, because it was all about living that moment.

I have to second Mike James’ comment. The flutes are great for parties, but if you REALLY want to taste the bubbly, do what they do in France… use an actual wine glass.

    And one more thing…
with the expansion of the Champagne region, how about you taste some wines that today are Sparklers that’ll be Champagne in the 2008 or 2009 vintage?

QOTD – This is an easy one. It was a long weekend in Camden, Maine in August 2006. My wife and I were visiting with friends from Delaware, Connecticut, and (our hosts) Maine. Good food – including mussels that we harvested ourselves and lobster caught by our host, great conversation – including the kind of “ragging” that only long time friends can get away with, and a seemingly endless flow of wine. Whether the vino was pricey or from the bargain bin I couldn’t tell you, but with those people and in that atmosphere it was fantastic.

At a pizza/italian restaurant in Miami with my girlfriend – ordered a four cheese pizza (that our server called ’stinky’), and couldn’t decide on the wine. The server recommended an incredible bubbly. The matching was unreal – I couldn’t believe how well the pizza and bubbles went together, and it definitely changed the way I thought about sparkling wine.

Sparklers & Champagnes are great but what can be better than driving in a open convertible on a warm sunny day sipping on some Robert Mondavi Chardonnay. The beautiful oak, balance, and tropical fruit flavours are meld together to bring some incredible synergy to this wine. This for me is a 2 case annual wine purchase for sure.

QOTD: The last night I spent with an “old flame” before I left the east coast, and her, about a year ago. It was the Summer of 2007 in Boston in my apartment after a great dinner, I popped a local Rhode Island wine (2005 Sakonnet Vineyards Vidal Blanc) that was just sweet enough for her, but with plenty of acidity, and we talked until the wee hours…

QOTD: Man, that’s tough. Really, for me, nothing makes me happier than seeing people I care about being happy or excited. Last week, I introduced 6 people, most of whom haven’t had anything but oak monster chards and other stuff along the same lines, to a beautiful Brunello di Montalcino. 4 or 5 of them “didn’t drink red wine” because they didn’t like it. Seeing all of them in genuine amazement and delight as they sipped on the wine, which admittedly was beautiful, afterwards telling me I had changed their views on red wine, was a great wine moment.

The wine itself was a ‘96, an off year for Montalcino, but this particular wine really delivered.

QOTD: I would say my best wine moment occured this past fall sitting in a farmhouse in Italy sipping wine the owner of the farmhouse had made himself! The meal, wine and company was fantastic. Simple but great!

Nice job, Matt! Congratulations on your graduation from med school!!

QOTD: My favorite wine moment was when I was on a trip to Washington State a few years ago hitting various wineries tasting rooms and I came upon a small winery on Icicle Creek Rd just outside of Leavenworth, WA called Boudreaux Cellars. They only accepted visitors by appointment, so I called and reached the proprietor, Rob Newsom, and went to see him that afternoon with my wife after we finished a hike on 7 Lakes Trail a couple of miles up the road. He was outstanding. This was before he had finished his winery building, so the winery was pretty much in a large garage. He took us on tour of the winery-in-progress down into the cellar and we tasted several of his wines (which happen to be quite good) and played fetch with his dog, Roux. It was just a great time and I highly recommend a visit to anyone who does a Washington State wine tour.

Interesting show Gary. Sparkling wine is my beverage of choice, and have been drinking bathtubs full of Cooks Brute for many years. It just seems to have the taste that I really enjoy. While the DeVenoge Brut sounds fun, I simply can’t phantom spending upwards of $4.00 per sip for any beverage. While your guest liked the first two samples, I unfortunately am too visual when I drink, and don’t care to look at a reddish sparkler. Probably my loss.
QOTD………I need to think on that one. Too many choices.

Enjoyed the show, GV. Your shows with guests are always entertaining and informative. Could the Korean beverage you mention be Bubble Tea???

QOTD: My wife and I had an anniversary in 2006 where I decided to get a Sauternes for us, and hearing all the descriptions of how sweet and honey-like and all that, we both sipped it and thought that it was the most rotten tasting stuff we had ever had! I get the noble rot thing, but HELLO! Needless to say, there was some mildew on the cork, so it was probably tainted. That was a very memorable wine moment.

QOTD— Tasting Iron Horse sparklers at the winery on a beautiful morning with a little fog in the valley with my wife celebrating our wedding aniversary. It was our own little private tasting and it was spectacular. The wine was pretty good too.

Congratulations Matt!!! My girlfriend and I will be joining you in that same accomplishment soon if all goes well.

QOTD – Last year when my girlfriend and I decided to cook for the first time together, we made a quick stop at the wine/liquor store after doing the grocery shopping.

We hadn’t yet discovered WLTV, and I didn’t know much about wines besides that California wines have a fruitier characteristic than French wines which have a more soily/earthy tones. Neither seemed appropriate to accompany our simple and healthy chicken and vegetable lunch, so we picked a funny-looking Chilean red wine. I can still remember the label, but not the name – that’s a great example of good marketing.

That afternoon we enjoyed each other’s company in the kitchen (though not without some bickering about our different cooking styles), we then reaped the benefits of our hard work by digging into a tasty and wholesome meal, which serendipitously paired perfectly with our wine. Our afternoon lunch soon trickled into the early hours of the evening as our conversation flowed like the wine that accompanied it. Before we knew it, our food and wine had all but gone and we were still at our dinner table talking without a care in the world. That’s my most memorable wine experience.

QOTD: Introducing wine to my fiance. She still is not 100% sold on it (she enjoys fruitiness). But teaching her how to taste and how to analyze it, and how its made has really opened her eyes up to a whole new world.

I thought you were not supposed to swirl bubbly wines. Doing so destroys the bubbles which is part of the fun of these wines. Or am I getting this wrong?

QOTD: My husband and I stopped for a night in San Gimignano and had the best wine of our lives: a 15-year-old Brunello di Montalcino. We had not ever tasted this type of wine before and were instantly hooked. We had a wonderful time tasting various wines from around Tuscany, but the Brunello stood out for us.

    Two points :

    1/ It’s Saumur not Saumar ;)
2/ If you guys like sparkling wines, you should give a try to Lambrusco wines from Italy, the dry one are great !

I totally on board, I can’t get enough sparkling wine! My Thanksgiving resolution was to, “drink more Champagne”. As for the QOTD, my favorite wine moment was in Madrid, Christmas 1999 with my dad and sisters. My first time out late with the adults. We were drinking whatever red wine the tapas bars had, and eating jamon & manchego, out carousing all night. But it was the first time I ever enjoyed wine as an “adult”.

Trying to get into champange buy I find it hard trying to drink it in non-special occasions. QOTD: Nearly two years ago when I went up in the mountians here to a winery called Icicle Ridge.
