Great show Gary. I was in Portugal a few years ago and had a great White Port, amazing! It’s about time they get recognized for more than just their namesake. GO DOURO! YEAH PORTUGAL!

2005 Periquita from Portugal. This wine is 10 bones in Canada(so 3 bones in US). It brings serious thunder, a wondewrful QPR.

QOTD: I’ve had some Portuguese reds, but nothing that’s stood out. Though I’ve had a lot of good vinho verde and sparkling wine from Portugal, so I definitely believe there’s QPR for the reds!

    Gary,
    Thanks for reviewing Portuguese wines
Please learn to pronounce the labels
Alentejano is pronounced “A-Lint-John-o” not “Alente-Hano”
The J is pronounced like a J not like an H
The same with Cerejeiras (Which means Cherry Trees)
    Pronounced “Sera-Jaytas”
    Douro is Doughro
    Hope this helps
    Thanks

Had some decent Portugese wine (besides port)…can’t remember the name

On a serious note, you mentioned how low the wages must be for workers in Portugal. Is there any movement toward fair trade kind of status for wine makers who treat there workers well? I would pay more for such wine. A 17 year old pregnant migrant worker died yesterday here in california from exposure while working in a vineyard.

QOTD: You inspired me to break out the Crasto Douro ‘06 red while i was watching. I dug it. Btw, nice “hooters”

Thanks for the show on Portuguese wine…what a deal! Can’t wait to find these guys.
qotd: I don’t remember the names of the wines from Portugal I’ve tried but I do remember they were interesting.

QOTD: Never tried a Portugese red, but I promise I will check the selection at the wine store next time I go and hopefully walk out the door with one to try.

On a side note, I have tried several Portugese whites and have liked all of them. I think Vinho Verde is a very under appreciated grape.

Unfortunately I only had one, Niepoort’s Fabelhaft and I thought it was overhyped and not all that great.

QOTD – CARM Tinto – recommended by you in one of the past episodes.

I think I’ve had Portuguese wines in the past… but I’m going to out and actively search for some thunder tonight. Obrigado!

QOTD: The 2003 Quinta de Ventozelo Touriga Nacional Douro… Wine Spectator was totally off with their 85 point rating — this is a 90-pointer in my mind, and has an awesome weight and finish while still being refreshing. Try it if you can get ahold of some!

You talked me into it Gary. I will promise to expand and try a portugese red.

my closest brush with Portuguese red wine was some Madeira Port several years ago…

also had the best ever sangria in a Portuguese restaurant in the town square in Sonoma, it was classy and a bit pricey so I expect they must have used wine from the old country.

Gary great episode. I really want to get a hold of that last wine.

    QOTD:
    -I Promise :)

QOTD – the only Portuguese red I’ve tried is 2001 Cistus Douro. Had it with some steak, and it was quite good. A bit bitter, but fairly smooth. I’m a fan of the vinho verdes from Portugal, and have been trying some more Portuguese wines around here lately.

I love the bargain bin, baby! There’s nothing better than when I can afford all of the wines on the show, even after shipping!

QOTD: Berco Do Infante Tinto. Ridiculous, just ridiculous for $7!!!

When you got worked up I got a little spritz. Man that is some fervor. Thanks for the new recommendation. My local store had 3 bottles. Went in and bought them already. Will buy more of the Sanguinhal Cerejerais especially if you carry it regularly. Great wine. I will leave a review on Amazon as I just finished reading it.

I tried the J.P. Red from Portugal a few weeks ago. Found it locally for under $5 USD and it was actually surprisingly delicious. It had less expensive packaging (no punt) and was lighter in ABV but had amazing fresh fruit and light easy drinking character. I thank you for turning me on to Portugal, it truly seems to be an amazing area for QPR!
