Dude, the Syrah suckeddddddd… It was awesome meeting you. Good times. You’re fan base is only going to expand. You’re a good business man and a good guy in general.

My favorite thing about Boston is that it’s full of colleges.. which means college girls everywhere… lovely! The old cobblestone neighborhoods are pretty kickass too

That was a fun episode! You should do a live one here in Portland. :-)

QOTD: I guess the fact that my company is based in Boston, so if they didn’t exist I wouldn’t be working here! I’ve been a few times, but haven’t spent much time other than doing work stuff, so I don’t really know what’s good about it.

It was a funny show! But no dissing KG! j/k He’s like a *God* around here. I do remember sitting there and thinking, whoa, this audience so toooo quiet! (at a few points). I think it was the gold brocade curtains & general fancy ballroom atmosphere. And Gary, how about checking out my blog post about my little interview w/you. OK? :-)

Good show! QOTD: I have never been to Boston can’t claim to have had authentic chowder, never had a Parker House Roll, like Dungeness Crab more than lobster, but hats off to the Celtics for absoluely destroying the Lakers. I live in the SF Bay Area and there are a lot of people walking around with a “B” on their baseball cap these days so I figure we’re either in the midst of a Boston invasion or there are a lot of spineless turncoats in the bay area who are Ben affleck fans.

Really fun episode you partisan drunk :)

Initially I’m jazzed about the change of venue in SF. The $50 didn’t bother me as much as the fact that I could get to Ft. Mason on public transportation, I just could’t get home on it at that time of night. I’m going to check out getting to and from Crushpad at night. Carpooling would be heaven. I have a Handicap parking placard if anyone’s interested :)

Great show Gary. A buddy of mine has four of those buckets in his house. I flipped out when I saw it in this episode and sent him a link to the show.

QOTD: I have to agree with the people. I’ve always had a good time in Boston. I do like the historical buildings, too. The food…eeeh.

I’m looking forward to seeing you in a couple hours at the book signing in Rockville, MD. Funnily enough, the bookstore is about 2 minutes from my office.

    Hi Gary,

Loved the show, gotta do more of these live ones. One comment though, the camera’s microphone works fine in your office but not in open spaces like that. Maybe you should get one of those TV little mikes that you pin to your shirt… just a thought.

QOTD: lived in Boston for 4 years and my fave is my Alma Mater: Boston College…

QOTD: The best thing about Boston used to be Tasty’s, the hole in the wall, 16-seat “diner”, at Harvard square that made the best 4am burger in the world. Unfortunately, the jerk-off landlords decided in ‘97 that Cambridge would be better off with another bank or an Abercrombie & Fitch. Way to go America!

Second best thing in Boston… definitely the Celtics. I’m a New Yorker who lived in Boston during college, through the darkest years of the team. I recently gave up on the defunct Knicks and was very proud to see the Doc and his team destroy slimy Kobe and his Lakers. Well done.

    Great Show!!!

You should definitely bring back questions to the thunder show!

QOTD: Well, I was born and grew up in Boston, so definitely a bit of love for the city on that aspect. (I live in Houston, Tx now and wouldn’t trade that for the world). Other then that, not much of a Bean town sports fanatic either.

Though it takes place in Cheat City, a great, great show. Another one of the many reasons you are my hero, you refused to spit into that disgusting bucket. That being said, I was in a suburb of Boston (Franklin, MA) last weekend and needless to say, I got into many a heated discussions about their cheating dog team.

But in all honesty, tonight meeting you, you made me a very happy old man. I appreciate your genuineness, your candor (you spanked the Free the Grapes guy in public) but all in all, your appreciation and respect for the “average Joe.” Knowing so much and appreciating wine just adds that much more to your aura.

    Again, thank you.

BTW, I forgot the 3rd generation wristband so I need to find a way to get one and yes, Spanish Cava is the perfect elixir to wean someone off Cook’s.

Take care. I hope to see you again soon.

    Cheers,
    Dom

    P.S. You’re right. I’ve seen them all. :)

GV you are great with a live audience to bounce off of and the wine question bit was excellent.

  76. June 26, 2008

    Tommy Vernieri

    Working the crowd, Gary.

I like the question and answer, you should bring viewer questions back to the show.

Good Show! I agree on your suggestion of Cave for people who are stuck on only one sparkling wine. Proseco is another good choice.

QOTD: I don’t have any opinion about Boston. I have only been there in winter and I was not impressed.

  79. June 26, 2008

    T. Holland

Loved the show. Grew up in Wusta (not faa from Bawstin) and lived in Boston for 6 years. Actually lived in a Boston University dorm literally across the street from the Commenwealth Hotel, which was actually an IHOP back then (better for “recovery Sundays.” Loved the Q&A format too.

QOTD: I love Boston. One of my all time favorite cities. Too many things to list, but some of my favorites are:
1.) All the pro-sports teams (especially the Sox & Pats)
2.) Sunset Bar & Grill (110 Beers on Tap & over 500 bottles)
    3.) Head of the Charles
4.) Public Garden on a weekday (not too crowded)
    5.) Esplande for running
    6.) The history

Definitely miss it as I live in NY now…

Top 4 show, easy. It blows away episode #212 away as a fav.

QOTD : 1. Intelligent people/audiences. A lot of comedians love playing here because they don’t have to dumb anything down. 2. It’s a pretty safe town. 3. Girls. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a co-ed. Now there’s a visual!

This show was just awesome GV. My sister was there for the taping and sent me a pic while you were tasting – I wish I could’ve been there! Loved the Q&A at the end too. QOTD: my favorite thing about Boston is totally the people. You can’t help but feed off the vibe of Bostonians – they make you love their city just as much as they do. Keep it real.

  91. June 27, 2008

    KyleLikesTies

Great show! You really bring the thunder when you have an audience; loved the feel / engagement that you had with the crowd. Need more live shows!

QoTD: Yes, yes, yes! Great question … so many things to love about Boston … I was going to say how friendly the people are until you said “the people” … so I’ll have to go with the cannoli in North End … Not *quite* Italy, but I defy anyone to find a better cannolo in the States.

  92. June 27, 2008

I love the history of Boston. One of our oldest cities and still vibrant and fun! I too, have a thing about the accent, esp. when spoken by Matt Damon..LOL

What about Touriga Nacional for the next big grape from Europe? And, even though it’s already fairly well known, from a mainstream standpoint, I think Tempranillo could stand to see an upsurgeance.

    Boston? The accents, of course.

Great show, Gary. It was fun to watch it again after seeing it live in Boston.

I really dug the Sur (I was one of the ones who raised his hand for the Black Cherry soda question) but the Rose wasn’t for me. Didn’t get to try the others.

Thanks again for signing my book and for answering my silly question about what the 1ER CRU on the cover meant.

  108. June 27, 2008

AHHH, what the fuck was that? this WLTV meets entertainment tonight episode is scary. to much showman ship + tits and ass + hamming it up to the audience; it certainly becomes more about GV than the wines. the show was about 2 inches form becoming a cliche of its self. the wines just seemed secondary. oh well. i am sure there will be better shows to come

QOTD: boston…. compared to living in DC, there are doughnut shops everywhere!

  109. June 27, 2008

    ex-lurkdawg

So, Boston is beautiful for a big city, and I do like the accent (although I like the coastal Maine variation on the New England accent even better). Despite these and many other things I like about Boston, my favorite thing has to be the driving. I mean the Boston drivers. They consistently pull some moves that I would never dare to try. I know other cities get crazy, too, but it’s funny to me how unseriously people take things like traffic laws in Boston. seriously

  111. June 27, 2008

    Rivethaus

Great Show as always. Dig the “shout at” Wegmans (I am from Rochester) Going to the store today, hope to score some of the Sur.

Boston has so many superlatives, The Red Sox/Celtics/Patriots/Bruins/ Autumn in Boston is awesome, the Bahstin accent (ya want dressin on ya salit? …stolen from Mike Barnacle), the Colleges (go BC), the faith, but most of all the warm, welcoming and funloving people…Bostonians have very slick, sophisticated humor that is appreciated by all. Great show. Naples Kathy aka Champagne Lady aka formerly an Eagle from Boston.

QOTD: BOSTON! That’s where I spent two years of my life before the fall of 2007 when I moved out here to LA. SO, I liked the peeps (my well-missed Boston amigos), the proximity of the whole city, the college atmosphere, the roof decks atop the brownstone apartments on hot Summer nights, and jogging along the Charles River near the esplanade and the Public Garden… and riding my bike through Beacon Hill… and walking Hanover Street in the North End while breathing in the intoxicating aromas of fresh basil, garlic, and olive oil in the historic Italian neighborhood, the home of my relatives.

I was in Boston last May, and one thing I really like about it is the way the town is such a mix of old and new. I walked from the North End through the Common to the Newberry Ave area several times. Really enjoyed it.

    GV,

A little tardy…favorite thing about Boston?…it’s kinda second-hand but I’ll go with Isaiah Thomas’ expression after ‘Bird stole the ball’…that still plays like a bible story out here.

Heads up. My wife (Lina) and I will be – literally – celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary (and 17 together) at your 500th show at Crushpad. We chose SF because of ‘Vertigo’ and the bonus of WLTV landed in our laps.

Can’t wait to see the show!

    Just keep going Gary.

Parking at Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market, walking around for a bit, a bite to eat at Cheers there at the Market (always sit at the BAR), then the T from Kenmore to Fenway for Sox/Yanks! That’s what I love about heading up to Boston!

  165. July 11, 2008

    JayZee

Rocking show, Gary. And actually a good “studio audience”, even if it was in Boston. You really need to do more Q & A like this – it was truly awesome and you did it very well.

QOTD: My favorite thing about Boston? Well, I’m in Beantown right now on business and I love the Back Bay area and Fenway Park (but, no, not the Red Sox). :-)

Fun live show Gary – this format works really well indeed. I pulled this out of the archives just to see how many times you would trash my favourite sports team, the Patriots, and I was not at all dissapointed. I think it is fair to say, when the day comes when you actually use a Patriots spit bucket, the world is about to end. :-)

Your episode confirmed advice I received two days ago from another brilliant professional in the wine business that Argentina reds – especially made from the classic bordeaux varietals – can be sensational for the price and are worth seeking out.

QOTD – Due to being a resident of metro Vancouver BC, I have never been to Boston. My first visit would be a side trip to Foxboro.
