Glad to see you got the Stinkor!

You’re right, a classic show though I’m watching it as I type.

I’m hoping Oregon wins this matchup.

I’ll be back to answer QOTD.

    Cheers!

QOTD: Tough one but I’ll go 9-7. Besides NE and SD the rest are winnable.

Bummer about the Oregon Pinot. I, too, was expecting a better showing.

Great show and I gotta sign up for the T-Cruise.

qotd: 7-9 everyone forgets farve was an INT machine until last year, and with a new offense and different receivers he will throw at least 20 picks.
I did an very similar tasting this weekend with pinots from burgundy, oregon and california: 05 maume gevrey, 02 beaux freres, 02 belle souers shea vineyard, 04 school house, 05 rochioli west block, 05 rochioli east block. Had almost the same results: oregon disappointed, rochioli west block killed it, east just behind; school house and the gevrey were very good.

Farve might be an INT machine but he doesn’t hold all the records because he sucks… I was leaning 9 and 7 before Farve… I’m thinking the Green Machine will add 3 wins… 11 and 3. I think the Jets will make the playoffs this years… And no I’m not Jets fan.. (Go Big D!).

Good Show. You mentioned that the OR Pinot was a good wine, but there were equally good wines at half the price. I am sure that is correct, but I doubt you will find another Pinot that good at that price. If you want to spend big money on a wine that drinks a 7 dollar bottle, Oregon Pinot Noir in the $20-%25 range is the way to go.

Great show. I consider you results for CA vs. OR PN today to be an aberration:)

Would love to join the Thunder Cruise, but no way to make it happen with the twins.

    QOTD – 6 and 10.

  18. August 11, 2008

    Ed Roberts

QOTD: Jets fall on their face first 4 games. Go 1-3. Then recover and finish 9-7. Make the playoffs and win at least 1 if not 2 games.

QOTD: No clue. Don’t even know how to score your wierd style of football. (Bring on the flames guys ;-)

Regarding the Poop. Can you talk a little to your Vaynerites about what makes the poop in the wine. I’d have thought being new world that it isn’t poor vinefication, so is it intentional? If you get the chance in your shows it would be nice to hear your comments about what causes some of the (unusual) aromas that you encounter.

Thanks for the shows Gary :-)

Yes I’ve had cinnamon sticks! I love eating them. Especially the way they get so sweet if you chew them long enough. You gotta embrace a bit-o-pain, though.

QOTD: 16-0…. Gary I know you love the jets, but if you want to urge the lurkers out you gotta ask questions they can answer…
weren’t you gonna talk about your trip to India?
And yes, despite the texture, gnawing on cinnamon sticks is tasty. Personally, I like to put the sticks on top of my coffee grinds or in boiling water to get the fresh cinnamon taste without the bark in my teethe =).

Glad to see you back in the USA. Thunder Cruise Woo Hoo!!!
Not surprised on the Oregon Pinot result if the winemaker has anything to do with Sine Qua Non wines. They are downright weird wines and expensive. More Burgundies please. Will finally be at Wine Library this Friday. Looking forward to a laid back Friday.

Qotd: I think the jets will end 9-7 or 10-6 and be on the playoff bubble. I’ve been a Packer fan as long as I can remember but as long as Farve is a Jet they are a close #2. I’ll order my jersey as soon as the initial rush is over. It’ll be the 1st time I’ve needed a new Farve Jersey in 6 years.

  33. August 11, 2008

That first wine has my palate all over it. I need to get me some of that. I like trying most every type of wine. My palate is not loving the Australian Shiraz’s. After tasting and enjoying different wines, I find myself craving a good Burgundy every once in a while. I have some special ones in the wine storage unit. I’ll go hug them.

I think you’re on to something with Ratlif. I watched the Browns-Jets preseason game and he looks decent (out of nowhere). I will say that Brett was a great business decision for the jets. All the jerseys and ticket sales will more than make up for his salary… though I think his play will be less than spectacular (and who knows how long he’ll be there?). A VERY poor long-term decision (if they don’t deal him to someone else).

QOTD: 7-9 Can’t beat the Pats or Bills to get into the playoffs anyway so why not fill the stadium with ‘Yorkers who want to see a legend play…

    QOTD: 11-7

QOTD…..I’ll say 9-7 because Favre is so much better then Pennington. I see the Jets play Miami in their last game of the season. This could be interesting if Chad is the QB, and the Jets playoff hopes are riding on that last game.

Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag on the Ampelos – you jerk! Kidding.

Jets will be 7-9 this year. Looks like a quick 0-3 start in my eyes…Pennington will look like MVP Brett Favre, and Favre will throw 3 picks. I’d get used to it though, the INTs will be coming fast and furious.

    Welcome back Gary!!!

  57. August 11, 2008

A month or so ago, you kind of dissed Favre, so I really expected a bit of outrage from you. I guess now you want to be neutral in case you get to meet him, get autograph, etc. I feel sorry for the Jets if they need this old guy to help them win a few games….
    Smell it first!

Great pinot battle. Had a bottle of that Boedecker pinot from Oregon you recommended several shows ago and it was money!

I’d offer you 25 cents a piece for your #11 jerseys you turncoat, but I don’t really want to continually answer the “Who’s he?” questions :)

QOTD: Sorry Gary, 7-9, and that’s as good as it gets.

  63. August 11, 2008

    John Farrin

Oh, by the way, nice show. The wine reviews are why I watch the show. Living in SF area I always get amused by Raider fans who are sure that their latest acquisition is going to lead to the Super Bowl, EVERY YEAR, before training camp closes. After the 4-12 season what do you hear? Not so much :)

  64. August 11, 2008

    Brian

Another great show Gary! QOTD: 11-5. Brett Favre is a big, big piece.

  65. August 11, 2008

I’m not a Jet lover or hater. The NY Jets, as far as I’m concerned made a bonehead move getting Farve. He quit twice with a team/community that loved the pants off him…………..he’s burned out. For the Jets to change their team, getting rid of Chad Pennington, and pay big bucks for someone who is almost guaranteed to be a shorttimer (my guess would be he won’t make it to Nov) is NOT med or long term thinking.

  66. August 11, 2008

    digitaldean

Being a Packers fan, I will miss Brett. He should do OK, if he’s reined in. He had one of his best seasons in 2007 when McCarthy (the Packers coach) kept him under control. If he’s reined in and has a decent ground game, 10-6 and a playoff spot.

  67. August 11, 2008

    Jay

I don’t care how old you are, when someone says “poop”, everybody laughs a little bit. It was great to hear a little bit more about the cruise. It sounds awesome (especially if there’s going to be a few hot young ladies).

QOTD: 7-9. I just don’t think they’re going to get to that .500 mark just yet. Plus, Favre makes WAY too many stupid plays to get the Jets over that hump.

  68. August 11, 2008

    Mark Tolerico

Great show, wanted to taste Antica Terra for a while now. Maggie actually isn’t the assistant at SQN anymore, but makes a great syrah, which you mentioned her own label called “Lillian”.

    Gary,
You never answered my question on facebook!

    Here it is again:

Gary, I have a good idea for a show, and if you do the show, a good wine to try for that particular show. The show should be, “The Sniffy-Sniff Show”. For the show, choose wines that have a fantastic or bizarre aroma. My suggestion for the show is Root: 1 Chilean 2006 cabernet sauvignon. I bought a bottle at Costco. When I opened it, the smell took over my kitchen (furthermore, it taste not bad at all). Tell me what you think?

I hope you have time to answer the question.
    Leo

Nice show, I like the challenge format of having the same grape but different
regions. Nice to have you back!

  83. August 11, 2008

GREAT ENERGY – GREAT style – you are back! I’ve decided Raleigh is not the place to find wines – none of these are in local stores either. Amazing.
The Pinot Noir smells were described wonderfully – I was sniffy sniffing my Pinot Noir (not one listed) and could almost find some of the components, never found the pickle or celery until you told me to look for it.!! wow.

Very poopy. poop barnyard nose. Those are funny. oh, and then raspberry. ha.

The last one sounded yummy. Very good show, it’s nice to have you back in the element you shine best in.
QOTD: Jets? Jets? is that a sports question? oh. sorry, don’t follow sports.

my QOTD: will US move military into Georgia to stop Russian aggression? and what are they doing in Atlanta, anyways? :*)

QOTD: 7-9, Farve should have stayed retired.

A change of heart from Gary V. Pre NFC Championship game you talked abot how Brett was a phony and over-rated. None of that now that he is a Jet.

Still love Brett, but he held an organization hostage and acted like a diva.

Go Pack Go! We will be just fine.

  91. August 11, 2008

Thunder Cruise definitely sounds baller, Gary. If you have video of Mott going in for an unexpected dip, that would be YouTube gold! :-)

QOTD: GV ya know I love ya Bra… i do root for the Jets most of the time but with Favre there I don’t see it happening as much he will be a newcense like Billy Madison in the Ms. Vaughns class. 6-10

  94. August 11, 2008

    neutron212

QOTD: the jets record is going to be 9-7 Vegas has them at 8-8 thats after the jets were moved up 2 wins when Farve joined the team. after all the afc east is playing the nfc west this year EZ wins

  95. August 11, 2008

    Tom B.

    Hey Gary:
QOTD: Too bad you were away during most of the Favre to Jets stuff. Being a Buffalo fan I’m finding it hard to predict more than 9-7 (not enough to sneak into the playoffs). However, I totally understand your enthusiasm. This is the most press the Jets have seen in quite some time!

If you owned the Jets, (I know you will some some day) would you have signed him?

  96. August 12, 2008

    Paul V

I’m thinking the Jets are going to win the Stanley Cup (I don’t think there’s any doubt about that) against the Phoenix Sun. I just hope they don’t fall apart like they did last year at Wimbledon. That was just embarrassing – in 50 overs no less!

    10-6

  97. August 12, 2008

    Marshall

Nice to hear somebody else praise the 2004 Burgundy vintage. A great underated vinatage.
    P.S. Farve stinks!

  98. August 12, 2008

    Scott - Boston

QOTD: Jets, uh… does it matter? Patriots continue their mastery, Favre or no Favre. aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Just a little fun ribbin’. I’m sure you all enjoyed last year’s Super bowl…

Jets : 10-6, Favre misses last three games of the season; just a hunch.
    Pats coast into the playoffs.

    Looove Stinkor!
    Scott – Boston

QOTD – Jets will go 9-7 this year.

    QotD: 10-6.

You gotta do a show on ice wine.

  101. August 12, 2008

I say Jets go 10-6, maybe 9-7. Jets will need the wide receivers if they hope to benefit from Farve.

  102. August 12, 2008

    Robin C

I love pinot comparisons. How can they be so different from each other?
I must have been napping – I missed the QOTD, but I gather that it had something to do with the Jets. I’ll be interested to see what effect Favre has on the team. Is the coach a doofus for making him run a lap?

  103. August 12, 2008

    manonthemoon

Always good to rock the pinot.

QOTD: The JETS will be a contender for a wild card spot with the addition of farve, plus the 2 linemen woody and faneca, and a monster in Jenkins plugging up the middle. Not totally sold on the D, but the offense should be very well balanced and a force. With that said you will exit the playoffs early when mr interception throws yet another big pick to end his teams season.
JETS 10-6 and my fish 5-11 (very easy schedule this year with the NFC west calling)

Good show on Pinots. I find them tempermental; still looking for a few that i like; dislike more than like.

Thanks for mentioning the post about Becky. I really appreciate it. Becky has been overwhelmed with the comments of support & encouragement. She says it’s amazing to think people are out there taking the time to do this.

I keep telling her it’s the power of the community.

First, California is not a Country. Great to have you back and this was a nice tasteoff of wines I’ve never had. Do you remember last season tasting the cabernet made by Sojourn Cellars and you did a whole show on it? I would like your take on their Pinot Noirs in a future episode.

Brett can handle the spotlight and the pressure and will win over the fans. You have good receivers for him to use his rifle as in a shooting gallery. Ping! Ping! Touchdown! His challenge will be to learn to read new defenses and play the Pats twice a year. It’s going to be interesting to watch his progress. We play you in the preseason and I can’t wait to see Brett in Green and White instead of Cheddar. 10-6 sounds about right.

  118. August 12, 2008

Good show. Why is it I am always shocked when CA brings the thunder. I mean this is a state that has consistently done some great things in wine, why should I be shocked. In all fairness though, ‘06 was a MUCH weaker vintage in Oregon, than ‘04 in FR or ‘05 in CA. So, while it’s all still wine on the table, it seems important to make that distinction.
    Still — LOVIN it!

Fun stuff! QOTD – Born and raised in GB, you will finally understand the love and loathing that is BF. He will force plays. He’ll be exciting. He’ll run around and get hurt and then play the rest of the game. But he looks like a deer-in-headlights up there, so I’m thinking you’ll go 8-8 or 9-7, with BF throwing 3-4 picks in the first 2-3 games. You’ll make a run at the end – maybe 5 game win-streak. Look at the scores and record for the 2006 Packers – and there’s your season.

QOTD: 8-8. Sorry Gary, but Farve throws more dumb passes than brilliant. And while that may work in the NFC, I think that the AFC will punish that badly.

Also, what happened to discussing India?

  129. August 12, 2008

    AshleyE

Well, I hope that Favre comes through for you. Heaven knows the Jets need it seeing as how they were 4 and 12 last year… The only teams with a worse record were the Dolphins and the Lambs…I mean Rams. (I can say that because I’m from STL.)

Anyway, I’m predicting 8-8. An improvement, but not a momentous shift their first year out.

And for anyone who hasn’t had the chance to catch Gary on Ustream, it’s a blast. A totally different experience and much more interactive. This episode was the first one I’d viewed that way, and it was a lot of fun. Thanks, Gary, and welcome back!

Always entertaining. Great to see some local Santa Barbara love. Ampelos does make incredible wine. It’s a good thing I got on their wine club list a couple of weeks ago. I don’t see it being open for very long, especially now that the cat’s out of the bag. They’re also farming biodynamically and have one of the most amazing vineyards I’ve ever seen. It’s not supprising the quality they’re putting out. It also doesn’t hurt that their winemaking consultant on the 05′ vintage is now the head winemaker for Sea Smoke. Great stuff.

    Hello All,

First Things First, the Jets will be lucky to go 9-7 . A very public bet with Gary: My Dolphins beat your Jets, first game of the season… if so, you have to apologize live (well, taped is ok) on your show for the times you bad mouth the Florida Teams… if you win, you sir get a free ticket (no joke) to CR on Continental…

Loved the Tannat by the way, good call there GV. (sorry that’s from another episode…)
By the way did you see the bullet Favre threw in Practice the other day? 60 yards in stride, catch it on youtube I think.

Right on with the ampelos pinot noir. Although I have to disagree with your final conclusion. The winemaker is Peter and Rebecca’s Son who also happens to be the assistant winemaker of SEA SMOKE. I was very interested in this winery because they happen to be bio-d as well. After tasting it I have to say that it is a spoofulated wine. Too much extraction and way to much hang time for a Santa Rita Pinot to truly display terroir. This is no wonder since that is exactly what you would expect from a SEA SMOKE. No uniqueness, and a disappointment to the soul of this beautiful vineyard.

Always knew most of the country thinks of California as being another country. This confirms it.

Don’t forget that Farve is the all time leading interception leader, or as some say, a turnover machine. He’ll lose as many as he’ll win for you with his reckless throws.

  155. August 12, 2008

    ChiroGuyDC

QOTD: Don’t make me answer this question Gary, you know where my allegiance lies…but in all seriousness, I feel the Jets have what it takes to be a 10-6 team, and it may be even enough to claim the AFC wild card others in the North or South falter. Unfortunately, they must eventually face the steamroller that is the New England Patriots!!!

Great show as usual Gary! You’re bringing straight THUNDER as always!

Great, great episode. I have a Sta. Rita Hills Pinot in my cellar, and it’s new, a Rusack. In fact, it’s the one listed in Gary’s Book. So I’m excited. But better than that, I’m excited that my beautiful wife Concepcion and this humble fellow Vayniac are going on the cruise!!

I’m a lifetime Tampa Bay fan, and your little dig on the Bucs did not go unnoticed. It’s a good thing your Jets are not playing the Bucs this year because, if they were, Mr. Farve would get his booty flattened so deep into the turf you couldn’t scraped him up with a Zamboni. ;-)

Bret will need to be more cautious with less familiar receivers so I expect the interceptions to be down. He’ll also want to prove himself with a new team so I expect him to have a good year. They’ll barely make the playoffs with 10 or 11 wins which is a big improvement. It’s not a bad long term move. Starting for a 4-12 team isn’t the environment to develop a young quarterback for the future. It’s better to have a veteran, who isn’t going to be around for a lot of years, take the heat while the young guys develop.
I’m looking forward to hear more about India.
Wow, I haven’t had a cinnamon stick since I was a child. I’ll need to get a hold of some.

I predict Farvrerreeevere out with a broken hip or a weak bladder or joint replacement surgery 3/4 through the season and the rest of the team falling apart after that.

Very disappointing that gang green missed the playoffs. Had some huge wins…pats…titans, though. Loving the Bordeaux shows as well as all the others.
