2nd! Been waiting. Now to sit back, relax and watch. US Open and G-Man. Doesn’t get much better than this.

5th (or at worst top 10). Love Gevry-Chambertin. Just wish they weren’t so d@~ned expensive. They are responsible for my Pinot epiphany.

Side QOTD: the longer hair, definitely. You’ve got nice hair — why not show it off a bit? :)

  7. September 2, 2008

    Dr T from N. Carolina

Hair — at least a little longer! the convict look is rarely attractive

Pigskin — sorry, don’t follow closely enough to say who has a bye this week! (if anyone does)

Fun episode, GaryV. Burgundy is one of those regions I need to explore a bit more. I’ve had a few wines, red and white, but have been hesitating. . . mostly because I’m worried that I’ll love them (and what an expensive habit that would be!).

  11. September 2, 2008

Nice show, at 50 bones for an entry level I think I will stick with Oregon.

I think you should go for the Mr. Clean look, would be worth a laugh.

QOTD: Pats as well, the cheifs will be horrible this year.

  12. September 2, 2008

    Dominus

Good show about my favorite varietal but limited exposure to the real thing, Burgundy. If I could grow it, I’d go the long route like your French guest awhile back.

QOTD: It would be easy to take the Colts vs Da Bears but i’ll save them for later weeks and go with the Steelers over Houston.

I saw Gevrey Chambertin and I’m practically drooling. I can’t wait to watch this episode but I’m still behind from vacation. See you soon.

I recently enjoyed a 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine de la Vougeraie.

  15. September 2, 2008

Excellent show. People need to learn that pinot noir is all about Burgundy, and that new world fruit bombs, by comparison, are flabby expressions of an otherwise complex grape.

  16. September 2, 2008

    QOTD: longer

Your hair! ahhh. Get a hair cut! Don’t get a lamb one! NOPE. don’t like it.

What happened 1:37 into it? Mott cut out your harsh words?
Secret Packs! yes! Cruise ticket in it? wow. amazing. Even a 50% discount!

This is interesting wines, I need to reach out and find some. The white Burgundy were amazing from your show. $50 for a Pinot Noir? phew.
Where do I buy the “big ass glass”?

We want more $10 wines. Even $15 ones. thanks.

    $124 wine? OMG. i stopped at 16:48

  19. September 2, 2008

    John Farrin

Nice show, but a little depressing that the extraordinary one was $124.

Hey, put a couple of skull tats with that buzz cut and you’re good to go.

QOTD: Vikings, and I don’t even know who they’re playing. I’m best when I don’t overthink these things :)

  20. September 2, 2008

    sam

    I,ve not had a Chevry-Chambertin…yet sounds interesting…

The hair looks okay Gary, but I must agree with Mott, a little longer would be better.

I like a little more hair. Interesting show, I haven’t found a PN that I even like, but the last one sounded superb.

    Askold Shegedyn

Great show Gary. GC is great. You should try more of the 2006 since the 2005s are going fast. You should do a show on the other vintages from 2005 since they are shutting down and people will need to wait years to drink these bad boys.

  28. September 2, 2008

    QOTD: the mighty mighty dolphins!

I like the episode 212 hairstyle by the way, but don’t listen to my opinion.

Hey Gary great show! but where is all the DRC haha. Not even a cheaper grand cru like their romanee st vivant? lol I’m just kidding. Hey i like the buzz cut and I think it is the cowboys that will coast. Hey I’m fairly new to the show and i’m a big fan, your take on the wines and approaching wines in general is refreshing and you descriptions are very original and innovative. Keep up the good work.

Great episode. I’ve only really had a handful of bordeaux and burgundy wines, and so far I’m much more inclined to explore burgundy.

  33. September 2, 2008

    Ben Janssen South Australia

Gary… You have become one of them. Way too focused on French wines. I find your opinions and views are very typical of an American wine critic. I find friends professionally and personally in the wine industry who aren’t American are quite put off direction of American wine pros.

  34. September 2, 2008

    Ben Janssen South Australia

Read into my last comment as much as you like. I find Gary’s pallet is favoring old world styles and gives them too much credit. This is causing an in-balance in your reviews. My personal opinion. Red into that what you like.

Gary – What happened??? Did your barber get mad at you???? LOL!!!!! :)

  36. September 2, 2008

  37. September 2, 2008

    Susan

Gary & Mott – You know me!!!!!!!!!!!! If your talking French wines, count me in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY glad to see you feature so many French wines. We all know they have been growing grapes & making wine for a couple of years…………. :)

  38. September 2, 2008

    Nico

Mmm, how can you go wrong with Gevrey Chambertin? Love those wines, can’t drink them often enough.

Please, keep reviewing French wines, don’t listen to the evil Australians.

Oh, also, agreed about tasting more $15 and below wines, that would be great.

  39. September 2, 2008

    ChinonRouge

If I could find the 2003 Serafin, I would definitely buy it based on your resounding recommendation. Too bad my “no ship state” has only marginal wine stores and an all too powerful alcohol lobby.

QOTD: Honestly, not interested in pro football. Sorry.

  40. September 2, 2008

    vindog

I would like to see Gary with some age…great palate!!! please take some French lessons as it is painful to hear you murder those Burgundian producers names. If he were to take the Master Sommeliers exam he would be drawn and quartered…but asked back to re take after some polishing of some very rough edges because he has the right stuff.

  41. September 2, 2008

Good show Gary! These wines are a little pricey but maybe I’ll look for them around Christmastime.

One day I will be able to try wines like these……

side QOTD~ just a little longer, you need something for Lizzy to put her fingers thru

QOTD~I only know who the Skins are playing and unfortunately they will probably lose.

  44. September 2, 2008

    Kirk (aka: slave2thevine)

Great to see some Burgundy on the show…maybe you could do a week long Burgundy theme. Cote de Nuits Mon/Tue Cote de Beaune Wed/Thu and Grand Cru on Friday (One from each region).
QOTD: Like I said before I don’t normally follow sports but I’m going to go with Seattle Seahawks because they are one of the few teams I know the name of.

    QOTD: Detroit Lions

Nice show on the Burg. vino. So popular, yet so mysterious.

QOTD 1: If you’re losing it, keep it short. If you’re not, grow it.

QOTD: 2. Tough not to go with the Pats. But, being the contrarian prick that I am, I’ll go w/the Giants.

  47. September 3, 2008

    brorjace

I’m always for more Burgundy shows…if only I could afford more.

QOTD: Pretty sure the colts will spank the bears

  48. September 3, 2008

Mmmmmm Burgundy where it’s at baby. Got to love it I just wish I could afford it.

    QOTD: ???

The hair or lack-of looks good. I think the Jets will win and so will the Packers.
Question:Can you do a Bourbon show sometime, or how about a brandy (Cognac/Argmanac) show?

  50. September 3, 2008

    E

    I don’t think I’ve ever had a Gevrey-Chambertin. And at $124 a pop … well, maybe I’ll just have another Chinon.

QOD: the Jets do not lose @ MIA.

QOTD: will have to say dolphins because I had the chance to try dolphin meat the other day.

Awesome show, Burgundy is pumpin’ out some serious juice but, like you said, it’s not cheap.

  56. September 3, 2008

Burgundies are so different from most domestic pinot noirs that the only similarity is the grape. Kalin used to make some of the only ones that were close. There are more now, and that’s a good thing.

Speaking of close, I call the Texans winning by a hair. Speaking of hair, your short hair isn’t growing on me. Not exactly new wave. May be no wave. Bye bye.

  57. September 3, 2008

    Justin L. Ove

Yeah you rock, again. Good show. 96 points is worth 125 bones, so hopefully I can find a bottle of the Serafin.
QOTD: I’ll say the Lions won’t lose, and I don’t know why.

    Great show…..ok haircut…lol

Actually you look a little scary with short hair. I think you scared Mott. Kinda looks like you just got out of jail or boot camp or some other place I wouldn’t be caught dead in. ;)

So, I’m still at the shore and haven’t seen you all summer. NICE!!!

Gonna try the first and third wines. I love those wines. You need to do more shows. You’re right.

The white coating on the outside of chocolate (most probably due to temperature changes) is the bloom: the cocoa butters separating from the rest of the chocolate. That shouldn’t hurt the taste, but 13 years is a long time to keep chocolate. I’ll bet you could still taste the difference between the chocolate made in Belarus and the chocolate made here. Very nostalgia producing. Lots of good memories associated with chocolate.

    I still don’t understand the mid-palate. I need a mini-seminar on it.

We like Chambertins very much. We holding on to a couple right now.

You need to grow your hair back so you can shave it again when the need arises.

    Is it Garasparov?

  70. September 3, 2008

Wow, a 96 point wine! I will admit for that price I would probably not seek out, but always nice to hear when a wine really rocks!

Hair? Fine…My husband does the same and I love it. Skulls are sexy.

GV – good show! QOTDs – I’m diggin the Caesar, but winter’s coming up – should let it out a bit. Also – Patriots, yes. But I’m going to say Dallas wins this week but not next…

I like the haircut, but it’s probably high maintenance. I presume you’re talknig about the FA cup, so my money is on Chelsea!
Re Burgundy, this show epitomises for me the exciting thing about being newcomer to wine tasting (as opposed to wine scoffing, which am expert at), the possibility of eventually enjoying those old sock-flavoured dusty old bottles which you’ve wondered what all the fuss was about for the last N years.

  75. September 3, 2008

Nice show. I’d love to try those wines! I support the buzz cut, as I wore it for many years myself.
Survivor Pick for Week 1: New Orleans will not lose in Week 1.

Speaking of changing the wine world, is there something we, the Vaynernation, can do to break down the senseless legislation in states like PA that prevent importing wines? I would love to be able to ship wine to my door! I shed a tear every time I hear about secret packs!!!!!!!!! Sites like http://www.freethegrapes.com/ haven’t worked… Please help! What can we do guys?

Big G, Great show. It’s always fun when you go nuts over a Wine. Ok, you have to let your hair grow Bro. Unless Lizzy likes it….

  78. September 3, 2008

    Lawrence Leichtman

A 96 point wine. Is that a record for you? I actually had stopped buying Burgundies because the prices had risen so fast. $125 and buying 5 of them $625 is way too steep for me.

  79. September 3, 2008

I love the burgundies. great episode. back to “business” after the GV “this is your life” show HAHAHAHAHA

Gary, great show, more burgundy shows would be great! It seems harder to learn about burgondian (sp?) wines than any others, shows focused on burgundy would be a great help

@ Scottie P–as a lawyer involved in wine shipping litigation (I worked on the very first federal lawsuit to challenge these ridiculous laws), I have to say, the wine wholesalers have a whole lot more political clout than we mere mortals do. It sucks, but that’s the way it is. But don’t give up the fight–get your fellow PA wine geeks and enthusiasts to lobby the state legislators. The wholesalers may have money, but they don’t get to vote. File lawsuits, do whatever it takes. Write letters, make phone calls, start up a state version of Free The Grapes and get lots of members. Get them involved. Get your rich friends to make donations to campaigns of state legislators (while complying with state and federal campaign finance laws!). Do not give up hope.

Gary V speechless? While there is no way in heck that I can split with a buck-24 for a bottle of wine, I certainly have no problem watching others enjoying it. Your static air and 96 score says it all.
Football? I’ll take a major pass. GO CAPS…………..

I watched this episode on U Stream and had a whole different perspective. Great episode. Wish I could afford these wines.

Great job on this one, GV. The ridiculously complicated laws and by-laws involved in what makes Grand Cru, 1er Cru, single clos, Village wines, and simple Bourgogne, is further mixed- up by the who’s whos of grower- producers, eleveurs, negociants, etc. One Bourgogne at $20 is simply not the same thing as another at ,say, $50. It is strongly recommended that Vayniacs do a little fishing around the web to be well informed before you spend the big bucks on Burg. Your time will surely reward you.

So sad…been leaving comments religously and didn’t get to this show until after 7pm. I did leave my comment before I watched today’s show if that matters. ;-)

    Wine Not?

Well, bummer, just as I was getting caught up on WLTV episodes (first week back to school is rough, you know!) I find out I’m 2.5 hours too late. Oh well, you win some, you lose some!

Thanks for the burgundy episode, though! You don’t often get speechless!!!! Wish I had some of that wine right now!

The hair is good either way…

I got nothing but straight-up man love for Gary V :-) … I ordered a bottle of 2006 Esmonin Estournelles St.jacques Gevrey Chambertin mid-episode… I had to, I absolutely love cherry juice… Looking forward to popping it open over Thanksgiving weekend. Keep up the great work, can’t get enough of the show…

Great to see big enthusiasm about the wine. I personally like the shorter hair with the scar, it makes you look tough.

Gary, now we’re on the same wavelength…GO PATS!!!

However, (QOTD:) I think Dallas will have no trouble with a banged-up Cleveland Browns team, though my WR stud Braylon Edwards should have a stellar day.

Great show Gary, thanks for helping me infuse HUSTLE 2.0 into my life.

Awesome show Gary – I’ve never had a Burgundian wine and I think that should be my next thing to try after a Tokay.

    Probably the long hair.
Nice show, Gary. Burgundy is just a difficult guess for me when it comes out determing how it will develop. Beyond Jadot, I’m a little in the dark. I look forward to more Burgundy shows.

Interesting show – I did not expect the 2003 to be that profound – at least as far as your notes and score seem to indicate.

Side QOTD: the longer hair is a better look for you dude. My wife confirmed this as well since she stated, “he looks like a weasel with the short hair”. :-)

QOTD: Whoever is playing against the Jets. ;-)

Loved this episode. I love it when one wine just completely brings the THUNDER! I’m going with a last minute entry of the Giants to win tonight over Washington. I figure let’s get the win/loss out of the way before Sunday.

  148. September 5, 2008

    Rick D

Dude – you rinsed your glass with 15 bones worth of Serafin. Put the cork back in that bottle and send it to me.

Hair QOTD: Ok, really. I hate to say it, but the haircut reminds me of only one thing: Concentration-Camp-City, not USA. Yes, I am Jewish, so it probably jumps out at me and might not for others, but the look is not your best. Sorry dude. Works for some people, I guess, but you look much better w/ more hair. Bet you’re sorry you asked… Don’t hate me dude.

    And the show ROCKED.

QOTD: I’ll say The Patriots as well…

If you don’t mind me saying so, you look a bit more serious and older with short hair, but that’s a good thing.

Cheers on the Straight Thunder !

When I think of the term Terroir, I think of Gevrey Chambertin. It’s special. It’s spectacular. In fact instead of tickets to the thunder cruise, surprise me with a bottle of Serafin in a secret pack!

    QOTD: Jets :-)

With all respect but is this man full of shit or what ? I encourage his enthousiasme but please do it in the wright perspective. Ok, he loves wine, he’s passionated about taste but don’t rediculize the French winemakers by tasting and comment their wines like he does. For the record, i’m no ‘close’ minded traditionalist but please…

    Hey Gary:

Definitely go with the long or longer hair. The hair is way too short. For the suicide pool, I am going with the Vikings against the Packers.

Go with the long hair (maybe even like you used to have it, spiked up all over).

I’m really happy your turning people onto Burgundy. Yes, I have had some lovely Pinots from Oregon and California. (I lived in Napa for a couple of years-loved it when the fog rolled in, after a gorgeous sunny day-and in the fall, the air just reeks of fermenting grapes!)I would drink them again and again. But oh do I LOVE Burgundy!! Now I live in Berkeley where on one end of my street I have Kermit Lynch and 2 blocks from my house I have North Berkeley imports. 2 great importers of Burgundy wines! I have become a Burgundy addict! I spent my stimulus check on Burgundy….my christmas bonus…Most of 2005 went into the “cellar”. 2006 seems a bit more ready to drink. I would like to recommend Jean-Luc Dubois, Chorey-lès-Beaune as a good example of a more affordable and elegant expression of Burgundy.

Longer hair is better I think. (Although wine drinkers “generally” fall into the more sensuous lot-who I think love the feel of the shortly shaved head)

Hi Gary! I think everyone looks better with hair. Football, I don’t want to think about right now (after lame Pats loss to lowly Dolphins). I have enjoyed some Oregon Pinots, most recently from Belle Valle. But that last Burgundy you tasted certainly seems incredible!

Nice stuff. I made beef bourguignon the classic way with a bottle of red burgandy. The broth was so good you could drink shots of it. Paired with a beaujoulis, it was one of the best meals Ive ever had. QOTD: Its 4 months too late, but I would have said my beloved ( and pathetic ) Seahawks.
