Good One, GV! Ray Barnes’ quote of Hugh Johnson gets it down to the letter. What I might equate to the Englishman’s ’session beer’. Not too intense, heavy, or cumbersome. Goes right along, by it self, or with light cheese, fruits, smoked whitefish, spreads, salads, or elegant entrees.

Is Drouhin still doing that Vero program? That was a balanced, well made version for the entry level. But as with most pricing structure hierarchies, the cherries at the top of the tree are so much more that the easily obtained ones. I used to get an incredible value from Bichot’s Domaine Long-Depaquit. But realize that in the hot vintages like ‘03, the converse is easily proven true in Chablis, and the wines are subject to flabbiness, due to loss of acidity.

Just so folks know, Chablis is true terroir and varietal characteristic, not hiding behind oak, or Malo lactic ferm (at least, almost never), though that is allowed, and usually at the remarkable, finest cuvees and selections, and even then, subtlly, and gently, so as to avoid having twenty-five dollars of make-up on a five dollar face.

QOTD – In the past week or so… a decent Spatlese from Pfaltz, a totally uninspiring Vin de Pays Rose, and an interesting Alsatian Pinot Blanc.

QOTD: Last week I was working through a 2002 Chateau Ste Michelle Syrah, this week is 2005 Mondavi PR Cabernet Sauvignon. Still trying to get a feel for different wines, learning a lot from The Thunder Show.

QOTD for last episode: GREAT SHOW, definitely a good idea! I’m a big fan of the longer guest episodes.

Definitely keep with the over the top aspect of the show! (re: sniffy sniff)

    Great show…love the “nerdy content”!
We started hosting a “wine and cheese” once a month at our house…one of the wines someone brought was “Silkscarf Ensemble 2006″ from the Okanagan Valley in BC. It was one I’ve had lately…had some great ones from Portugal lately too.

QOTD: I just had an Australian Shiraz, don’t remember exactly which, and am too lazy to go and look. It was pretty good though.

QOTD – I am trying to drink all kinds of things from around the world. Tomorrow I am attending an Oregon pinot tasting, which is a favorite. But anything new and different is fun.

    Thanks Gary

QOTD: What am I drinking? Last night a bottle of Chinese wine ‘Suntime Niya Red 2002′ – surprising quaffable. What else – Alsace whites, Pinot, Argentinian wine and trying to try a few unusal thigns from Italy.

    Cheers

I just had a 2002 Hoepler Pinot Noir from Austria. I was surprised by it. Definitely a Burgundy-like wine. Tons of cherries and a little sweetness to it. Other than that recent wine, just about anything. Any wine that is interesting and some from Michigan, being that I live here now.

just had the 2007 monte novo…also just tried a PV for the first time…loved them both…i used to drink malbec almost exclusively but since i got into WLTV i’ve been adhering to its mantra in full effect…thanks garyvee…you make wine exciting and if i had heard those words come out of my mouth a year ago i would’ve fallen down laughing…

QOTD: I just had the Domaine Pinson the other night and thought it rocked. Other than that alot of Spanish wine (mostly tempranillo) because it is such a good value as I’ve been cutting back on my spending.

QOTD: Mostly Rhone during the end of summer early fall.
You are so right Gary, French Chablis is a fabulous wine the steely, wet rock, acid profile pairs well with may food. I have been fortunate to holiday in France several times Chablis is such a beautiful area

Sadly, you’re dead-on right and I’ve not paid any attention to Chablis given its jug reputation here. Thanks to shows like this, that will change.

QOTD: Getting into WA state wines lately. Cracked the Eppalock Ridge Shiraz recently and thought it was killer.

Keep up the great, nerdy content. It’s really what drives the show.

I really enjoyed tuning in after a long absence; your enthusiasm is infectious. I also appreciate the facts you shared this episode. I dig Chablis! QOTD- I have been drinking quite a number of wines from the Languedoc, Minervous in particular.

Poopy rock smell!!! Like Chablis but unfortunately my taste runs to the Grand Crus that has gotten expensive as of late. My go to wines are Spanish Garnachas for the most part. Had a new one this weekend Castillo de Momesan Garnacha 2007. Really nice and not expensive.

QOTD: Just had a Smith Woodhouse Tawny Port…amazing how the acid was cutting my tongue!

A quick recommendation if you are going to get nerdy. Please include the age capability of each wine (which you are usually good about) and whether you may be drinking the wine too soon. Also a discussion of the vintage in that particular region of the wines tasted, which is vitally important when talking quality, price and aging, especially for the wines of Burgundy(which you have also done in the past).

Carlo Rossi Chablis! yes! makes for a good foundation of a sangria. Nothing else. smile.

2nd wine – poopy rock smell. I need to get out there and try more wines to find some of your terms. Just wonderful. Straw and hay, i’ve always thought hay was more earthy and straw was more grassy. hmm, need to hang out at the barn more.

QOTD: Walnut Crest South American Cab you highlighted – what a great deal/taste. I have been doing Horizon winery, local in NC, come to NC. I can line you up with a great winery, cooking school, etc.

drinking a few zinfandel’s at home. good but something about these particular bottles is just a little too sweet. getting ready to try my first arneis. great show gary — felt like i learned something.

Good show Gary! Looking forward to the California Chard show. Are you going with a Montelena? Nice, balanced, “burgundian” style (no oak monster!). Maybe something from the Santa Cruz Mountains? Santa Cruz chards typically show good acid.
QOTD: Our own wine. Rhone-style field blend of red varietals with a bit of white aromatics (viognier, orange muscat) mixed in. Also a Dow Colheita 1992 Tawny Port. Needs a bit of a chill on it due to some heat on the finish.

Gary – any news on the new green wristband? I’m hoping that I haven’t missed out on it because I wasn’t able to spring for the election pack, but I have noticed that you had the Statue of Liberty on the wristband, so I’m pretty sure I’m out of luck. Oh well, you still have a devoted Vayniac in me!

Good show! It seems like Gary’s voice is borderline shot today (following the Jets win). I bet $8 that Gary is hungover????

And no props for the Colts beatin’ the Cheatin’ Pats! Great, great show though and I will procur some of the Drouhin.

I’ll be locked and loaded for tomorrow night’s show in preparation for tomorrow’s results.

QOTD: Koehler Chardonnay, Beaucanon Cab Franc and Rutherglen Red

    Go Colts!

    Cheers!

Great show. I’ve been wondering, why have you dropped the “whether they like it or not.” off the close of the show?

    QOTD: Trying different Carmeneres.
