    Brazil or Germany

German Riesling story…. Mmmmm what can I say, I am a Riesling fan, drink Riesling everyday, make Riesling for a living. A bit of an obsession. #1 culprit would be Egon Muller. #2 culprit would be Terry Theise (would be awesome to have him on the show btw).

About domestic dry Rieslings for fun?

“Mochi” again. Are you really smelling mochi? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochi)

And for goodness sake, in German “ei” is pronounced “eye”, “ie” is pronounced “ee”. Leitz is pronounced like “lights”.

QOTD: Losing my ability to care, given the officiating, but Brazil.

Keller is not from the Mosel but RHEINHESSEN!!!

Argentina most likely — my heart is always with Chile though! German riesling…I'll have some very soon.

Someday, before I die, I want to see a team win that isn’t from Europe or South America. I don’t think it will happen this year. When the US lost I switched my allegiance to our North American neighbor to the south. That didn’t last long. Ghana and Japan are the only ones left and I don’t think either of them have a realistic chance.

GV – Another success, one of the better German shows! Nice to see the Leitz blowing heads!

QOTD: At this point I want either Uraguay or Germany to wine, but most likely Brazil!

jeez, I'm late to the party…still been on fire and trying to catch up with folks here.
I was up at the Burlington Wine and Food festival Friday afternoon when this show was released…by coincidence I tasted the Leitz 2008 Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Spatslesse ( notes say rich spry juicy spicy tart and chalky- mouthwatering) in a small but hour long lecture with Kevin Pike from Skurnik/Thiesse…very nice and extremely knowledgeable guy. Seriously knows his stuff.

  14. June 29, 2010

    BurroBoy

GV I am totally with you on the Leitz, the Magdelenenkreuz and the “3″ QBA were both nothing short of electric fruits and veggies…invigorating. That said, everything that we get here from the Skurnik/Thiesse book via VT Wine Merchants is really good.
WL only returns two wines from Leitz.
QOTD: Brasil now that Chile is out. Chucha!

    Hey Gary,
    Rant to follow:
“Just our 2 cents worth here… a good episode is a good episode with or without guests. Wendy and I watch every, I say every, episode even when we are apart, and we enjoy the change up of guest, no-guest, on-location and in the office. Wine is a big subject and you should continue to go big in your scope of work. Please avoid being sucked into the vocally loud/messaging intense minority who only want to see and hear about Red, White, Rosé, Glass and Labels.
Go where you got to go, do what you got to do!”
    Rant over.
Great episode. Looking forward to our next Riesling. Hope we can find that Josef Leitz. We do July 1st in Canada and we have not even begun to think about our wine… sorry. See you next time you are in Montreal.
    Much love, ?
    Bill & Wendy

    PS
    Our warmest regards to K-Murphy.

    Dear Gary,
Nice episode- I've never been much of a Reisling fan- but the comments on the Leitz- have me intrigued. The most I have ever been excited abt Reisling- was in the Finger lakes- Imagine Moore winery had a dry and “fresh” offering…when we ck'd into our hotel (5/09) there was a Reisling tasting- and Weiner (sp) had the best then (out of 3)-anyway-I'm now less shy abt this grape-knowing not all are so sweet. A NY pal- Sandy W.

Thanks for reviewing some Riesling! I'm on the lookout for the Leitz! Heymann Lowenstein has always come short of my expectations too. I've got a lot of respect for what he does, but the few wines of his that I've tried have been a bit hot and austere for my tastes. Cheers!

hey Gary! great episode. You're back in full form. I wish you had invited Lyle Fass onto the show to taste these riesling's with you. He's got an extensive background in German trocken bottles and comes across as highly opinionated. It would be fun to see you two go head to head. Oh, and Germany will go all the way!

Lorcher Kapellenberg Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2006 is good, drink it. The end.

By the way, good episode. This is what it's all about

Great episode — I still think you should have Peter Weygandt on as a guest….

    J Crazy

OK here's the deal. Riesling, sure, it's awesome. I love the juice, it's good from the grapes with the skins and the seeds and the whole crushing with the yeast and the alcohol. But, dude, why did you have to mention the WC at the end? You have to understand man: I'm an American who spent the 2002 World Cup in Korea and who now lives in Japan and is married to a Japanese. World Cup = Sadness Central Station. The US and Korea were valiant but were bested and Japan lost off ONE damn PK kick by Komano. Japan was toe-to-toe with Paraguay the whole match and will still be thought of as a second rate team cuz of that one shot. Damn, man, c'mon.
But I have to give my answer, right?
So, here it is: I don't give a flying f*&k. And, whoever wins can go suck a bottle of Riesling.

QOTD. Spain has a one in a generation chance to win it. And I hope they do for the sake of soccer in general, because they play the attacking or beautiful game that Brazil used to play (but no more :( ).

Nico, we'll see you in semis after you bear Argentina.

Thanks for the great show. I think the Keller needs some more year in the cellar. The Keller wines especially the First Growth are not made to be drunk at a young age.

YES! Riesling, the true king of the white grapes. I obsess over it. Excellent classic show. I MUST get my hands on that Leitz. I've always been impressed by their bottlings, but I haven't had that one yet. QOTD – Germany. C'mon, it's the Riesling show!

Great show, thanks. A quick dummies guide to German pronunciation; “e-i say eye”, “i-e say ee”! Very simple to remember. So “Leitz” is pronounced “Lyetz” (not sure how to write it phonetically) and not “Leetz”! Cheers.

    Enjoyed this episode.

QOTD – Do not have a clue.

German Reisling story – limited tastings with our German styles, much more a fan of the Alasace style.

by the way, you can´t compare a 2008 Keller with a 2009 Leitz. sure thing the 2009 takes the lead! 2009 has been a toptop year for the riesling!

    Hey Gary

Good show, you've got to love Riesling, I njsut wish the Germans would make their labels a bit more user friendly.

QOTD: who'll win the World Cup? I tipped Spain, but at the moment Holland is looking strong.

    Cheers

    Great show , good info!!

QOTD: Every riesling I have bought always seems to be from Mosel. And Riesling is my next white wine to search out a big knock out type wine!! That Leitz sounds like it would be great!!

Good show. I love you pronouncing the names of old German vineyards. Did you know that in the Rheingau region the “1″ stands for “Erstes Gewächs” (“First Growth”) whereas it stands for “Grosses Gewächs” (“Great/Prime Growth”) in the rest of Germany? It allocated by the association VdP to wines from the top vineyard sites.
