The white Bordeaux blend sounds great. It always intrigues me how when blended with Semillon, Sauvignon blanc’s insane herbaciousness is reigned in. I’m not usually a fan of oak on Sauv blanc, BUT I think when you add Semillon to the party, something happens between the waxiness of the semillon and the stinky green tones of sauv blanc. A sort of hole is created in which the oak can sit comfortably and integrate into the wine in a way that it’s not just vanilla sitting on top. I I love good white Bordeaux, but I don’t love the price tag, I’ll look for the Leeuwin.

    Great episode. I’m always disappointed by the Semillion selection in wine shops. You almost never find a 100% Semillon. When made well Semillion can be some of the most transcendant wine on the planet — and not just in dessert wines!

    On a final note I am astounded by the frequency you are “broadcasting”. This is really a great source for any wine enthusiast.

    ‘Floral, acidic, plain, simple’… appears to be JUST THE OPPOSITE of its name! Does one pronounce the ‘e’ at the end of Nepenthe?

    Leeuwin Siblings Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon:
    ‘lingering flavors…go well with foods… complement salads’… Yes, BUT with ALL salad dressings? Hard to believe it ‘works’ with Ranch as well as Oil & Vinegar dressings.

    Also, please let me know where I can purchase Dennis Hogan’s ORANGE wine… spent 2 hours searching the internet, including WineLibrary and Google…no orange wines found, although I did locate a Dennis Hogan who died in 1511 of consumption.

    One last IDEA:
    If one was to MIX the 3 wines in the BOWL to your left, as you face the camera, pour the mixture into an expensive bottle and offer it for sale do you think these particular wines, in combinmation, would get a 92 or a 96 from Robert Parker?

    So far I have really, really, really, enjoyed this series of wine information videos. This episode saw a giant leap up in audio and video quality. Good work! It is still difficult to get a good idea of the color of the wines. Might I suggest a small white sushi dish with some wine poured into it. Just a thought. Anyway, I love what you are doing.     How come with the white wines you use one glass. But in episode Five – Shiraz you use a fresh glass for each wine.
    Are you a red wine snob?

    I could not agree with you more. I am always looking for other white wines and fortunately there are more and more good ones avaialble.

    Others you have that I love are Alvarinho-Trajudura and Wieninger Vienna Blend.

    As the fall is now upon us I am moving away from the summer whites that I have been trying lately and certainly moving away from the Sauvignon Blancâ??s that were refreshing, and crisp for all those hot summer days. Here is the challenge to myself for the coming year.. I know I love Riesling, and I’m particularly fond of the wines from the Mosel region. I really like Sauvignon/Semillon blends. I found more hits than misses this past summer with this style. But I want to commit to trying at least 50 different 100% SB wines in ’07. I’m interested in trying Sancerre and Loire valley wines, but obviously New Zealand and other regions will be in the mix.

    I just found your web site and I have to say I love it!

    I am from Australia and am a huge fan of Leeuwin Estate wines but I have to say you are missing a review of thier most exceptional wine, the Art Series Chardonay.

    I am sure you have the same problem over thier with the abundance of sub standard Chardonay which puts people off the variety all together but you really should try this wine. The younger vintages of this wine are great but if you want something mind blowing try getting your hands on some older vintages, the ’97 and ’95 vintages are drinking very well right now and if you can find it treat yourself to an ’87 or ’86 vintage.

    I am trying to get a friend who lives in Thomasville North Carolina to try this wine but he has not been able to find anywhere that stocks it in his area. Anyone who could point me in the right direction for somewhere that stocks it in his area I would really appreciate it.

  • I have the Leeuwin Artist Series Riesling 2004 in front of me, and the bottle is rapidly diminishing. Too bad you’re out of it now. Wow! So much wine for $14. I am nearing the point where I will have reached my quota for the evening.

    You didn’t mention it, but I find the wine to have a rubber Spaulding ball element, what we used to call “Spaldines” when I was a kid, and this is fantastic. I’ve had California Rieslings that have completely lost the minerality element; this Aussie Riesling, however, glories in it.

    Riesling rules!

Unless it is a riesling or a dessert wine, I almsot always prefer to have a red. I’m never opposed to trying something new though, and will alwyas try something if it is offered.

    Good tip on the white wine cooling effect to hide the flaws. I take all my whites at around 60-65 degrees, but, like single malt scotch, when I first taste it, it’s at room temperature.

    I love your expressions while you’re tasting. Always makes me think: is he going to bash it or praise it.

    I’m loving the pre-thunder, Gary! get fa’shnikin!
