First time watcher. Not much critisism yet. I like this. I can learn about wines and and I am so new to them that this is helpful. More soon.

The guy that said that this is on a second grade level should go back to kindergarten. This is without a doubt one of the finest and most edifying events to take place in the world of wine. Gary your knowledge is amazing, and your ability to present that information in a way that allows all of us to learn is a gift. Your presentations are fun and that is the way that I have always approached wine. If you canâ??t find and enjoy the $4.00 jewel then you probably are not truly able to appreciate the $100.00 wine because you have nose in the wrong place.

I just watched this segment immediately after watching Episode 18 on decanting. So, it immediately struck me, why don’t you review all wine just like you did on Episode 18, i.e., with a bottle that you have decanted and a bottle that hasn’t been decanted?

For that matter, the lesson I took away from Episode 18 leads me to ask the question: What’s the point of tasting a young wine that hasn’t been decanted?

  • Alan great question. I did have this wine opened for a long time and it was breathing, though I didn’t use a decanter….maybe I should have! Great point!

Your videos are excellent, Gary! They are very informative and are the next best thing to attending a tasting – I sat at the same table with you at the fabulous Gaja dinner last year (when’s the next one?). I am a HUGE Egelhoff fan. I loved the ’02 and not only got a case but a double magnum as well for my cellar. Given prices for Harlan, etc., I believe it is a bargain!

So here we see the evolution of WLTV start to turn towards Gary’s super pumped enthusiastic and impassioned style of delivery. I have friends that are into the Cali cabs and cult wines, but I missed the boat. This is especially due to the way prices have jumped north in recent years. Itâ??s hard to fork over 300 plus bucks for a bottle of juice at the local steak house, but you have to admit, it makes for a hell of a dining experience. I’ve found some amazing cabs out of Argentina and Spain recently for under 50 bucks. These have been my go to reds for value.

You are right on with the Egelhoff review. He also makes a Two Worlds blend of his Egelhoff grapes and Austrailian Shiraz that is out of this world. Even at this price level Bob’s wines outstrip others that cost $100 or more.

I will definitely be on the look out for Egelhoff.

I don’t know if I have left a criticism yet so I’ll start working hard to come up with one. Ha.

This is definitely not 2nd grade level. This is covering some very basic information, but it’s also catering to those of us that want a little more than just a score. I think it makes the rating of the wine more real when you have somebody that can, essentially, discuss the wine and give you an almost-live interpretation about what they thought about the wine. I’m sure that there will be other episodes that will appeal to those that want to get technical. This is REAL value here. Let the 2nd graders go and pretend to be big kids while those of big kids actually reap the benefits of the knowledge that you are sharing with us. Remember, nobody forces us to click the “play” button to watch these vlogs.

I really love this episode. I guess what I could say is that I hope that you keep trying to expose us to things that are completely different. I had never herd of this until this episode and I love that. Thanks Gary!

is this still the dryest wine tasted on wine library tv (3/26/2008)?

nice episode, even if I’ll never have this wine. it was educational.

2nd grade?! don’t get me started.

    fa’shnikin!

Have never really tried any California cult wines. Mainly scared off by the price and the amount of them out there. Never know which one of the twenty or so Cali cabs in the store for $75-100 is worth getting over any of the others.

Egelhoff wines are always great! His Walton Label is a winner too. I have tasted many of the wines he’s made. (Partridge, Phelan, d. Arthur. etc.) His own label is even better.

You are right on with your review. I barely made it past 2nd grade, but I do see the value in Bob’s wines.

Glad I stumbled on to your website.

Back when Gary was not tried of Calif Cabs….background poster of an WL ad. Love California Cabernets, have been lucky to have some really good ones, Caldwell, Stag's Leap Cask 23, Insignia, Altamura. http://www.winelx.com

  • Gary Vay-Ner-Chuk peeping out here for sure….! Great show!

Have had some pretty good Cali cabs. The best being a 1995 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill. Probably the Single Greatest Wine I've Ever Had! 99p. You need to taste Diamond Creek once in your life, but don't buy and pour, it needs time. And can last… forever probably.

  • Thanks for the information on Bob Egelhoff Gary, now I have another wine to seek out!

  • Anonymous

The exact reason this works is that you took the snobbism (is that a word?) out of wine

  • Anonymous

Not a big fan of Cali cabs to be honest, way too astringent for me, but I have to say I’ve never had one that had enough time to age and open up. Hard to find older vintages in Qc.

  • Anonymous

minus the tannin and the “youngness” the Merlot I’m drinking right now reminds me of this wine your tasting right now, and at 1/4 the price I’m feeling pretty good!

  • If I am in the California area. I will look out for Egelhoff! Come to VT!!!
