Hi Gary, thanks for the education as always. My question for you relates to your history which you mentioned today: “What do you remember from your childhood about Belarus? What brought your family to the USofA, and especially, how did your dad get into the wine business?” I’d be interested in hearing about this even if I don’t win the bottle rack. All the best, Jim

    TimF,
I keep the ah-so around for old bordeaux corks – I guess old burgundy, too, but I don’t have too many of them. Old natural corks tend to get a bit weak and can fall apart as they age when attacked with the usual wine opener – either a screw-type or a worm-type. In any case, the ah-so works great for those special cases. HOWEVER, in my experience it does very poorly with the current batch of heavily waxed/reconstituted/plastic type of ‘cork’.

    Gary,
For the question contest………..If I open a case of all the same wine, is it possible for each bottle to have a noticably diffent taste? I have had this experience recently and it’s making me wonder if something is up with the wine or is it me. I notice the absence of the normally fruity taste in some of the bottles. They are coming across more like straight alcohol in varying degrees. Of course I’m referring to my favorite wine. I don’t think I need to tell what that is. 🙂

I am GOING FOR THE LURKER PRIZE!!!!! Watching since episode 70 or so. WLTV ROCKS

  • Great episode Gary…contests are fun. I think my favorite game show was Jeopardy. I didn’t get into too many game show’s, but that one I seemed to always see. So I guess it’s that.

My question for you sir, and if it’s not the best, it’s definately an intriquing one: But how is it that the Jets defense, according to your forcasted score, will give up 3 points during a bye week?!?!? I think that seems like a good question, don’tcha think?

See you later, have a good day.
    GO BEARS!!

I guess I’m not a lurker, I once posted a message about Gary’s hair being messed up.

  • Question for Contest:

Gary…What’s your Dad’s favorite wine / wine region!

Didn’t Stallion get disqualified yesterday for cheating? I didn’t think he was still in the running.
Come on stallion, you live within pick-up distance from WL. You are better than that.
And by the way, Rocky IV is the greatest Rocky movie of all-time without a doubt, if not the greatest sports movie. It also has the sexiest villain. And i don’t mean ivan drago, i mean his communist girlfriend.

  • MaryS

Gary, is there a limit to the number of questions we can submit for the contest? If not, here is another one:

Do any wineries actually still use people to press the grapes with their feet? If so, is there an “Employees must wash their feet before returning to work” requirement? If not, is that why some wine smells like sweaty socks to you? 🙂

  • CGF, thanks for the agreement for ROCKY IV….but when I went to the wine library, i had to go through 1287 tolls to get there. Free shipping saves me money too. And I didn’t get banned from the contest…lol

    I’m a long time lurker,

favorite game show was either “Let’s Make a Deal” with Monty Hall, or the “Gong Show.” I have a two part question. As a Bordeaux collector, and a lifer in the food business, at what point would you no longer recommend decanting for vintage wines? I’ve been lucky enough to taste some 45’s and older, even a couple 1890’s. To me, number one, this is a very acquired taste. Beyond that, this seems to be a very subjective question that I’ve yet to have antone give me a solid answer to. This leads me to the second part of my question. If you choose not to decant, what is the best way to handle and pour the wine to stir up the least amount of sediment? TLCook
