Gary- Great episode! I didn’t get the 6-pack due to cold weather shipping fears, but I will seek out the Sansonnet in particular.

Brandon M – That is a very timely story and it is great to learn about Larry Londer, another good guy in the wine world. Like you, and many others who comment here, I would give wine to anyone who asked or even didn’t ask. Wine is great to drink by yourself, but it is even better to share. Gary said the same thing today. Sharing, and caring about others, is what wine is all about. Cheers!

    “Youâ??ve got some competition:

Reckon it was bound to happen at some point, although it does seem like a bit of a backhanded compliment.”

    First time commentor:

WHAT IS THAT NUMBER OF ON THE BOARD?

That is the number of days Gary believes remains until the
Jets start their winning season (Summer Training).

    RECOMMENDATION:
Hey Gary, love the 6-pack episode. But $125?
Next time you do a 6-pack episode, how about catering to
the $5 – $15 “Cheapkate” drinkers out there (like Tangaroa)?
If you can get it down to $60, I’m in…

Where was the rest of my comment??.. as I was saying…winetastetv….like listening to a female Thurston Howell the 3rd gush over every thing she puts to her lips…. exactly the thing I DO NOT LIKE about much of the wine community.

    Gary,
One of my favorite episodes. Great work. Refreshing commentary. Your palate was sharp. You really turned on the charm. Your enthusiasm is so infectious who could resist opening a bottle, any bottle, to drink along?
And I enjoyed seeing your father on the CNBC piece. Very urbane, sophisticated gentleman.

Great episode, Gary. Quite a set of contrasts in the wines you selected. Can’t do all of them, but I will pick up a couple.

QOTD tomorrow – What is your favorite Kosher wine?

    Gary V,
I did not order the 6 pack because well- ok I am a dope- Going to get it and watch the episode with my wife when she can drink and her Mother so we can all learn a few things- In the mean time I guess I will have to get a few of the Borolo’s to sample ahead of time

QOTD-What is the stupidest thing you ever did to win a contest?

  • Gary,

This is a rant, so don’t publish it on your site if you don’t want to. I watched the CNBC thing and congratulations! That is really an achievement being recognized nationally. I know how interviews go, though, the interviewer keeps the parts they like and create whatever they like. There is a part of your interview where the CNBC person asks if you could sell anything and you replied with barely contained glee “Yes, absolutely!” So, is that it with you, man? Are you just a salesman or did the producer create that illusion for CNBC’s core demographic? Are you just pushing us on used cars or whatever’s handy? Wine is a special thing! I like reading about it … watching someone talk about … drinking it … walking around a vineyard or even a restaurant where people are really enjoying it. If you need a refresher, re-read the Kermit Lynch book or visit a winemaker that really cares about what they’re making or a sommelier that has spent their life learning it. Sure, wine is also a business, but it’s not JUST a business. Tell me you’re not Cal Worthington. I need convincing and I bet I’m not the only one.

  • Smiling Pelican, I know you’ve been watching for a long time, what do you honestly think?
I really believe that this community knows ME, I think you can see how quickly it was edited. If you’d like to read more, there is a huge thread over in the forum about this.

    Gary:

There is some truth in Smiling Pelican’s post (36). Any one who has watched WLTV for awhile knows that Wine Library TV is a service, not a selling device, but CNBC’s interview made you out to be an aggressive salesman – interested in one thing, making a $$ on an extra sell. I didn’t think the piece was that complimentary – – nor reflective of what Wine Library TV is all about.

    Hey Gary,

YOU’RE obnoxious!! 😛 Great episode! Though I didn’t taste any of the wines, it was very informative.

You know me, loved the “girls” and “Fabolus”…hilarious.

    Smiling Pelican,
I took away something very different after watching the CNBC show on WLTV.
I think CNBC did a great job.
You are reading too much into just one question. Gary is energetic and honest. Most sales people are not honest. I have done some selling in my day (still do some). Most sales people just want numbers. Gary is different in a good way. He is NOT just about selling and the numbers. Remember, at the end of the show, he says you with a little bit of me. Most people working in sales see that the other way around: Me – with a little bit of you. Gary is not just about pushing or selling whatever. Remember, also in the CNBC segment, they talked about Gary’s passion for wine.
    I hope that helps.
    🙂

    Gary-
    QOD:
I have to agree with Brandon M.
    QOD should be:
What is your favorite bottle that I(Gary) have ever recommended?
    🙂

Hey, Smiling Pelican, chill. Your post is more than a bit disrespectful of the much needed consumer service Gary provides. Perhaps it is his common decency or playfulness that seems too good to be true. Perhaps it is his singular lack of guile. Hard to say why you might suspect that some ulterior motivation might be driving him. He is the real deal: a very knowledgeable wine guy overflowing with the desire to share what he has learned. I hope that I can learn just one half of what he knows of wine from his extensive business and tasting experience, and drawn from his personal relationships with winemakers all over the world. Take it from me, and I’m in the wine business, Gary is the best and the brightest of the new generation of wine enthusiasts.

  • Smiling Pelican and Joe (Kinda)

Are you kidding me? So let me get this straight, the WHOLE interview is about Gary demystifying wine and that’s the squabble you have with the interview? I believe that Gary could sell anything, what is wrong with an honest answer? But his love is wine, so that’s what he sells. To me, your picking fly sh%$ out of the pepper. Man…so many things are wrong with your rant! “Are you just pushing us on used cars or whateverâ??s handy” TERRIBLE. Would Cal Worthington tell you that a Chevy Cobalt is a piece of crap…PAZZZZZZZ, even though it is? That’s what your missing here. How many WLTV epsiodes have you watched? Go back and watch some early stuff where Gary explains he’s pissing people off. Talk to Ian Doring and see how Gary’s business is ran and the type of customer service they provide. Then remember that everything at WLTV is FREE.

Maybe I’m a little too serious about this, but I for one am getting sick of all the STUPID questions about Gary’s credibility….it’s just getting so damn old!

    Brandon:
My post wasn’t that I thought Gary or WLTV is not real. I have know and done business with Gary since 1999. I do believe WLTV is a great educational service. My point was that the CNBC interview did not reflect that purpose and I was left feeling it was jadded. My point was with it being not that complimentary, why should Gary post it and direct WLTV viewers to it?

  • Gary,

I have been lurking here for about a week know, and I just have to say: I think that you are amazing, what you do for wine library TV is revolutionary, and I really appreciate it. I really do.

That said I am now out in the open. I have been part of the corkd.com online wine community since just after it’s inception, and have found WLtv from there. I have been referring my friends to this site, and sincerely hope that wine library TV continues to broadcast, grow and prosper. Gary, thank you.

    Best wishes,
    Joel

Wow! No PAAAZZZZZZZZ on any of the six pack…I almost like it better when you pan at least one wine…I guess it is that whole Simon-American Idol-syndrome. I’ll be trying the Sansonnet this weekend.
QOTD-I also agree with Brandon M.
Thanks for the link to winetastetv-informative but very dry…it remined me of a something I had to watch for a college class or a cheesy corporate training video.
Speaking of corporate, I manage a well known store and could also sell anything to the right person, it doesn’t mean that I do, or that money is all I care about. The one press interview that I did was totally butchered once it was published. This blog is informative and FUN, it is not about sell, sell, sell. If it was why would Gary pan so many famous and expensive wines? How many times has he lowered his rating of a wine because he felt the price was too high?

  • Joe…I understand…and I am more suprised by Pelican.
Here’s the thing though…I know Gary’s blowin up, and this was a big deal to do, so why would anyone take the wind out of his sails like that? Also, if you know Gary, and you know what he’s about, why not take the positive out of it? I just refuse, at this time, to back anyone that questions him like that, and frankly, I really am tired of hearing about it!
