Nice reviews Gary – I’ve really been enjoy your show; just found it a few days ago.

I’ll admit I never (knowingly) had the California “Chablis” … I did have a 2002 La Chablisienne Mont de Milieu last year that really opened my eyes to these wines. I think Pouilly-Fuisse also can provide some good QPRs.

I guess I missed out on the free shipping, I think my first order shipped this morning!

Can someone point me to a guide to grape varieties, regions, and the like? I’m totally confused now about chardonnay, chablis, bordeaux – which is a region, which is a grape…

I don’t recall ever buying a jug or box.. but I’m almost certain I’ve partaken…

Ok- that’s it- I’m posting from now on, no matter what. I have said that I’m a 21-year-old stuent and restaurant Server/Bartender in Boston, and have gotten into wine over the past 2 years (in part thanks to Gary!) I was so happy with all of the responses on the “introduce yourself” page and the encouragement to post even if I can only do so at about 1AM after work each night, around the 100 post mark. Well, that doesn’t matter, because I watch EVERY episode, am almost caught up on all of the ones I missed before I became an official “Vayniac” (yes, I have my shirt to prove it), and I’m going to post this far down all the time from now on!
That being said, thank you Gary for another enjoyable and informative episode- Chablis deffinitely has a bad name in the U.S. thanks to Mr. Rossi, and I’ll try to seek out an affordable (real) Chablis before we (with a miniscule bit of of Gary) change the Wine World too much and everyone finds out about these values. THANKS AGAIN, BIG G.!

QOTD: I’ve never EVER purchased a US jug Chablis, but I tasted Mr. Rossi’s effort at a friend’s house party once instead of the crappy keg beer there (I guess there are worse things than jug wine!) Basically, it was like Welch’s grape juice (which I like) with way too much acidity and noticeable alcohol (…which I don’t like).

  • Celia

oh, and thanks bunches for the shipping! 🙂

QOTD: 8-10 if Almaden makes fake Chablis. Oh to be young and uninformed again, I can only dream. C’est la vie.

To be honest with you, as for the JETS I don’t know who would be the best fit. Thats a quandry which needs much discussion over many glasses of red burgundy, the most thought provoking of all wines. I am available for counsel when needed. Cheers.

  • When’s the NYC party?

I’ve never had a single jug of Chardonnay.

QotD – My parents always had 3 jugs when I was growing up. “Chablis” (white), “Burgundy” (red) and gin. At 5:00 the evening wind-down began with a dry martini… or 2, while they played a game of cribbage and vented about their day at work. Then my dad would ask mom, “honey – do you want red or white with dinner??” and the appropriate JUG would come to the table. Until a few years ago – I thought chablis and burgundy were the names of 2 grapes -a green grape and a purple grape! Needless to say – I never personally tasted the wine, I just remember my mom always had that “smell” (cheap jug wine!) when she tucked me in to bed!

They still have the jug-o-gin, they’ve progressed to BOX “chablis” (yikes! – but it saves me money when they visit me because they bring their own in a cooler!) – but the system has served them well as they are happily celebrating their 5oth anniversary this summer. Maybe the tons of jug wine helped them make it?!…

When are you gonna bring it to Seattle…This town has great WA state wines and can always use another party…

I’ve never had a jug wine. Perhaps this is because I never drank in high school and just once in college (But boy did I drink that 1 time! I weighed 103 lbs and drank a 1/2 pint of Bacardi Dark in about 2 hrs….I’m VERY sure that I almost Darwinized myself that night 🙂 Anyway, after that the taste of alcohol made me nauseous for several years, then I got married and had kids and my life was on hold—but now I’m cured! I love beer and wine! But now there are no jug wines to be found. Right? At least, none that I’ve seen. I tend to go to the wine store vs the grocery store unless there is something very specific to buy that I’ve already had. Plus it has to be on sale…
