First day of vacation in topsail beach, NC. Ordered a case of wine that Gary had reviewed and looking forward to tasting each with him. First night, sitting on the porch. Definitely agree with him on his assesment here.

QOTD: If I could get in the way back machine, I'd make Gary what I had tonight. Low Country Boil. Crabs, mussels, shrimp, crawfish, polska kielbasa, corn on the cobb, red skin potatos, all steamed in Rodney Strong Chard with a generous dash of old bay…. yeah that's it.

Interesting episode, I am always hoping to find a great cheap wine, lately I have been striking out so now I don’t feel to bad.
QOTD-Prime Rib! with mushrooms and onions, homemade horseraddish. For dessert, Tres Leches

In addition to TJ, madeira was also a favorite of Jane Austin’s.

Loooooooove madeira, such a nice smooth treat. I’ll have to give this one a try.

(ahem, make that Jane AustEn — bad spelling fingers today)

QOTD – If I won, I’d probably make pizza. Everything from scratch except milling the flour, milking the cow, and bringing the water from the well.

As free shipping goes and those wristbands, I just can’t take things for free. That, and I’m awful with a videocamera and making that pizza takes a LOT of time, man!!!!!

Thanks for another great episode. I love the value wines.

Like the Incredible Hulk taking a dump in a sandstorm,

QOTD: A turkey sandwich. Give me a break, I’m a 23 year old bachelor; I can’t cook. Or maybe all this matza is just making me think of anything with bread right now.

This grill master would be serving 8 oz lobster tails with 10 oz filet mignons, grilled asparagus marinated lightly with olive oil and herbs, and my wife’s famous grilled in foil red potatoes again lightly done in olive oil and vidalia onions… you may want to stop by even if I don’t enter a video, just bring a bottle to pop.

I concur with the numerous remarks above, this was another great episode. An excellent selection of different wines at affordable prices for those of us that are just getting our feet wet in the world of wine.

QOTD: Roasted rack of lamb with Malagueta pepper and Farofa crust.

QOTD: Porcini and Taleggio Pizzetta (ala ‘OTTO’, I hope you know what I mean G-Man.), caponata with grilled bread and extra capers, grilled NY strip au poivre with haricot verts and roasted mushrooms. And dessert: Rosemary Park’s Chocolate cheesecake. God bless, and happy coronary. Wasn’t it Goerge Peppard who said-“I love it when a plan comes together”.

Gotta hugely disagree with you on the Norante Sangiovese. How the #$%^ can you like the Vitae Colli Senesi and not this one? My bottle of this had no chalk, no poop and lots of cherry fruit. Is this another one of those Italian wines where every bottle is a different experience?

I for one was elated at your scoring of DMN Sangiovese. There is a marathon thread on it on the forum, and I am distinctly in the minority in saying that it sucks. Can’t believe the Parker raves. I haven’t found anything from this producer that I would ever buy again.

oh yeah the contado isnt bad either, you could get that at wl for like 12 bucks. Anyway how can a 7 dollar wine be good anyway, the glass bottle is the most expensive part, you might as well get wine in a box, like the silly drunk girls in college do.

This may sound ridiculous but I haven’t tried a Sauvignon Blanc since I turned 19 and truly discovered reds. Grassy cat pee notes with hints of poo may just be the ticket to reevaluating my earlier (childish) assumption that whites were dull. As for a hypothetical menu of what I would serve were you and a number of friends to come to dinner. There really is nothing comparable to oysters followed by a deadly mushroom pate en croute. As for the rest of the meal…

all those wines kinda sucked. but thanks for the effort. i really like that you seem to be tasting some of these for the first time on the show. makes me feel better for when i buy a bottle, open it up, taste it, go “bleccch!” and pour it down the kitchen sink!
QOTD:winning the contest means i would have to get in front of a camera. not likely. (i’m shy, not ugly) but, if i did…(most of you guys are so uninspired — grill, grill, grill!) artichoke pesto bruscetta, osso buco, roasted green beans, garlic mashed (potatoes), blackberry torte ala mode, chocolate truffles.

YES! VALUE EP!! And a great one at that. Thanks for thinkin’ of the lower budget Vayniacs today, BIG G.!

QOTD: A true Italian Sunday dinner for my Belarusian guest of honor: homemade sauce with fresh basil, crushed tomatoes, and a few other of my mother’s family secrets, a little sweet italian sausage mixed in with homemade meatballs, and maybe some chicken vina rosso all over pasta. Probably the best I could do in my limited kitchen for ya.

Short ribs marinated for a day in Cabernet and vegetables, then braised and slowwww cooked for 6 hours until the meat disolves in your mouth…ladled with a little of the brown gravy over a plop of garlic mashed potatos and small pearl onions with a light reduction drizzled around and over…creamed spinach on the side…that’s after the ceaser salad and before the choc mousse torte.

I’m thinking old world bordeaux or aged new world cab or the petite syrah I had with it tonight!

    cheers

  • Malarkey

Well, like Wendy above, winning would mean getting in front of a camera and I ain’t gonna do that. Even if I had the time to do it, I probably wouldn’t.

Now cooking on the other hand… IS my thing. And if you are bringing 1000 bones worth of wine, I’ll pull out ALL the stops:

    osetra caviar, totten virginica oysters
mussels with garlic, fennel pollen and chile vinegar
    butter poached lobster
grilled yukon river salmon with preserved lemon
    foie gras with huckleberry sauce
pan roasted veal chop with white truffle mashers
    coconut sorbet
    bananas foster (so old school!)

I could add more courses if that’s not enough!
