Are you still reading comments, GaryVee? I discovered these videos and decided to watch from EP 1! Thanks for the education.
New to wines, so I haven’t yet tried a Barolo.
Read today that cork’d has croaked. LOL! Too bad, but created an account with cellar tracker.

    Hey Gary,
I am italian and I live in Rome. Now I’m studying in Ohio (grad student) but every summer I go back home for a month. If you go to Rome and want a Vaniac to host you, you got it!

QOTD: Spaghetti Carbonara, the real stuff that you get in Rome.

I’m back from around the clock hours over memorial day weekend and the week after. Good stuff to know that you are taking care of us as you vay-kay in Greece and SF (12 episodes in 1 day).

that’s why you have so many vayniacs out there! keep it up, and the next thing you know, you may have a 30,000 SqF wine store…oh wait, never mind.

  • Lurker here, coming out of hiding. Love WL TV! My girlfiend and friends think I’m some kind of wine expert now… nah, I owe it all to Gary V. You rock dude!

QOTD: Super Chicken Parmigiana(stuffed with Ricotta) at Frankie & Johnny’s Pine Tavern in the Bronx with Chianti Classico.

  • QOTD: Damn, I’m torn. One of my favorite meals is the local Mama Lucia’s (in Olney, MD) Fettuccine Bolognese but with spaghetti instead of Fettuccine along with Chianti. My other (newer) favorite is Lasagna from Biscotti’s Ristorante Italiano (in Derwood, MD)… with… um… Chiati. It really doesn’t matter what Chianti. Neither of these restaurants have great wine selections, but with their food, even the Piccini Chianti is good.

If you’re in Maryland and can get to Biscotti’s, please do. Their lasagna is the way your grandma made it in Italy.

Okay you caught me! I’m probably the best lurker around, havenâ??t posted here in a long time, but love your show.. I’m just getting caught up on the episodes, I’ve got time to watch but not enough time to post. (what’s up with that?) I’ll promise to give my .02 cents when time is available.

Great show! I haven’t tried Barolo’s, it’s on the list if the price is fair. $50 bones is a little pricey, is there any out there in the $20-$30 dollar range with anything close to the taste from this episode?

WOW! I can’t believe you did 12 shows in one day and with the same lime shirt, come on break it up put on a Pickle shirt or Monster shirt, As you know all true Vayniac’s love Pickles and the Oak Monster. (Well I love the Oak Monster,YUMMY)

QOTD: I’d have to say Teriyaki seasoned Salmon grilled to perfection, with a side dish of noodles smothered with a thick red sauce toped with sliced cooked cherry tomatoes. And a glass or two of my favorite Merlot. (Oh Yea!)

  • Hey Gary – yay! Barolo rocks, one of my faves. I must get the lineup, esp that Massolino Margheria. my fave italian/food pairing – guancale carbonara with a Barbera.
p.s. – are you in Greece yet?

I love the Barolo wines. Often forgotten. Enjoy San Fran.

The enjoyment you experienced with these wines was very evident. The way you describe Barolo reminds me of the flavor characteristics of Priorat. I think I would probably enjoy Barolo, but 50 bananas is a little expensive for my budget.

If you love Piedmont and Barolo, you might enjoy a book I am reading now called “Romancing the Vine” by Alan Tardi. He is a former chef and NYC restaurant owner who moved to Castiglione in the middle of the Barolo zone in Piedmont to work in the vineyards there. He describes in great detail the yearly cycle of work in the vineyards, the making of wine, how Barolo wine came about (French influence by the way) and has included lots and lots of detailed recipes for authentic Piedmont cuisine in the book. I am really enjoying the book and hungering even more to try the wines. One thing I didn’t know is that nebbiolo grapes are named after the Italian word for fog or nebbia which tends to shroud the vineyards in this region at certain times of day during the growing season. All in all, for a wine and/or Italian food and culture lover, I think you’d like the book.

QOTD – sorry, nothing to contribute on this one.

I can’t pick just one Italian dish, I love it all. As for Italian wines, I need to try a Barolo, haven’t had a bad Amarone yet, but enjoy some the simpler less exspensive stuff, i.e. Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, not life changing stuff, but solid, many for around $10, great with pasta.

  • Ok, I relent, I have been lurking a few weeks after the Digg guys mentioned you and I have gotten more of an itch to stretch my wine tasting thanks to your great reviews. Great episode and enjoy your travels.

    Favorite Italian Dish: Lasagna
Wine: Merlot typically Ecco Domani or Freemark Abbey.

Gary. I really enjoy your show. I have tested some of your reommendations and you are right on the money. I waswondering if yu could do a show on Cameron hughes and what he isdoing in California and perhaps give your opinionon some ofthe wines. Also a show on petite syrahs would be wonderful. Thanks for the good work you are doing.

God DAMN that was a great episode. I love the fact you pointed out: though they’re not cheap, once you pass that $50 threshold it seems you can’t go wrong with barolos. Love them. QOTD: It’s Mom’s meatballs and gravy. Tons of cheese and hot pepper. Nice old Chianti to go with it. Nothing better my man. I hope Lizzie’s Italian for your sake. 🙂

  • Pastore

Love the nebbiolo! Great episode. Always look forward to the Italian wines.

QOTD: Bagna càuda. With some cabbage, or crusty Italian bread. The wine has to be hearty to stand up to the anchovies! Big reds, like barolos are great with this.

Great episode. Only had a few of Barolo and Barbarescos so far but I really like the nebbiolo grape.
QOTD. Italian food is great period. It’s tough to choose a favourite. So I’ll choose one of my favourites. Spaghetti alla carbonara. Went great with the Valpolicella I had.
I just got back from holidays and got the Vayniac wristband in the mail. Sweet! Picture to come soon.

  • Mr Vigs

Have always loved that Barolos are earthy and complex without being over the top. Recently had the 2000 Renato Ratti â??Rocheâ? at a restaurant’s half price wine night, and really enjoyed.

“shut up and do a keg stand….” classic.

Gary, I know there are a few american grown nebiolo wines. Can you squeeze some into an episode when you get back?

    Enjoy your trip.

I AM NOT A LURKER!!!! (anymore)

QOTD: I’m not a fan of most tomato based sauces. I prefer alfredo and other cream sauces. I love tortellini with pepperoni and alfredo sauce. Don’t have enough wine experience to select a wine to go with it. I’ll have to try some. ;>)

holy CRAP, there are a ton of comments on this episode!

I REALLY want to try some Barolo now. It seems like the list of varietals I want to explore is always getting longer. I just bought a bunch of rieslings because I’m moving past my dark red and purple comfort zone. Maybe on the next order I’ll get to brown.

QOTD: My favorite Italian dish is a seafood linguini that my girlfriend makes. I’m also a big fan of spinach ravioli w/ pesto. The best wine I’ve had w/ the linguini was the ’05 Demeter “V” Furmint. Delicious!

Two questions for you: 1) Gary, does the picture on Cork’d have to be OF ME? 2)What’s up with the WLTV cameraman? …Did you say that he doesn’t like wine? I guess you’ve been referring to this for a while now, but I’ve never really gotten the joke before now.

Never had a Barolo but I have some in my cellar that I can’t wait to drink.

QOTD: Beef in Barolo – last time I made it I had an amazing Barbara by Massolino (and of course I didn’t use a bottle of Barolo to cook the beef)
