EP 249 Muscadet Wine Sampling

Gary samples some Muscadet wines, because some of us don’t have Franklins pouring out of our pockets.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Chereau Carre Muscadet Chateau De ChasseloirMuscadet
2005 Domaine De La Cognardiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet
2006 Pepiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet

I just had my first Muscadet maybe a week ago or so, and I loved it. I can’t remember the name off hand, though.

QOTD: I’m really not very familiar with much European wines in general. I used to have the misconception that all French wines were too expensive, so I just avoided that part of the store. I didn’t know there was anything other than Chianti and Super Tuscans from Italy. Only recently have I realized there are great values from France and Italy. I still don’t know what Germany has to offer aside from Riesling, which I’m not a big fan of–although, if someone can direct me toward a good, bone dry Riesling for a good price, I’d try it with an open mind.

For value, I’ve stuck mainly to South America and Australia/New Zealand. I’ve recently also gotten into South African wines. I require value since I’m a poor graduate student 🙂

  • Mmm… I wish I had Franklins pouring out of my pockets. Those are some of my favorite types of wine.
QOTD: I’ve never had a Xarel-lo. But I’m going to Spain next Spring so I’ll take care of that.

QOTD: Since I only drink reds, I don’t think I’ve ever had a Sauvignon blanc. The only whites I have experience with are the sweet dessert ones: Muscadet, Moscato d’Asti, Sauternes. But I consider these desserts rather than wines

  • Very eye opening. I had never heard of (let alone tried) muscadet.

QOTD: I have never had Barolos or Brunellos

  • Karl Laczko

Starting to look tired Gary, can’t wait for tomorrow!

Never had a Muscadet, it’s on my list though.

Hope you’re having a good time in Greece, I hear it’ll stop raining soon.

  • QOD: I’d have to say that lots of regions you’ve reviewed haven’t shown up for me: Douro, Loire valley, I have Sancerre pretty high on my list of stuff to try.

  • 12 baby

QOTD: Fortunately I’ve tried all of the “major” regions/varietals through courses and self-experience, so I guess that leaves off-beat choices like a Charbono that I need to try. At least I’ve had to try it since I saw that Vermeil episode the other week…

    Hey….where are all the comments?????

I’m having trouble watching the Viddler Video….not sure if that’s part of the reason for the limited comments.

Can’t believe you did such a marathon of Episodes.

    thanks for your efforts Gary…and Erik…and Anti-Chris

  • An excellent remark on â??truenessâ? in this simple wine, and definitely a valuable comparison to Pinot Grigios and Sauvignon Blancs that cost twice as much.

How about Vinho Verde from Portugal for the same purpose?

  • QueSeraSyrah

I absolutely love Muscadet… especially with oysters on the half shell. As for the QOD: Still have yet to try anything from Douro.

I have had a muscadet, not overly impressed but it was decent, here are my notes. “Wife did not like, I thoroughly enjoyed. Not so much impressed as I thought I would be, and I probably won’t buy again at this price [$14], but it is a decent introduction to a muscadet and makes me want to try more. Found the wine to be quite smooth, hint of fruit. 83.”

QotD: To my knowledge I have never had a wine from Piedmont or Chablis.

Gary, THANK YOU for this episode. I am in the 5% who have tried Muscadet – used to buy a lot 5 to 10 years ago when I was poorer than I am now. Since moving to LA, I have not bought one Muscadet. I just forgot. Instead of my usual Sauv Blanc, Chenin Blanc, or Pinot Gris with California salads out at the pool, I am going to stock up on Muscadet again and make it our summer drink! Thanks for the reminder,

    Joe

Gary: You read my mind. I loved this show. I am a fan of Muscadet, even thought I have not had many. I just started getting into them this spring. Read my comment from yesterday. You did it and you were on vacation! Bring on the Oysters.

    FredNYC:

Muscadet from the Loire Valley is bone dry and the perfect match for oysters. What do you drink with delicate shellfish….Barolo??

I reckon by my best Jethro cipering episode 256 will barely be long enough to hold the “Welcome……. Vay-Ner-Chuk” and “you and a little bit….. wine world, aren’t we?”

Also, notice the left sleeve is now rolled up, looks like we have a prolonged strip tease in the making.

QOTD- Sadly most, although I did grab about 6 bottles of things other than my fruit bombs on my last order, baby steps.
