EP 249 Muscadet Wine Sampling

Gary samples some Muscadet wines, because some of us don’t have Franklins pouring out of our pockets.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Chereau Carre Muscadet Chateau De ChasseloirMuscadet
2005 Domaine De La Cognardiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet
2006 Pepiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet

I just had my first Muscadet maybe a week ago or so, and I loved it. I can’t remember the name off hand, though.

QOTD: I’m really not very familiar with much European wines in general. I used to have the misconception that all French wines were too expensive, so I just avoided that part of the store. I didn’t know there was anything other than Chianti and Super Tuscans from Italy. Only recently have I realized there are great values from France and Italy. I still don’t know what Germany has to offer aside from Riesling, which I’m not a big fan of–although, if someone can direct me toward a good, bone dry Riesling for a good price, I’d try it with an open mind.

For value, I’ve stuck mainly to South America and Australia/New Zealand. I’ve recently also gotten into South African wines. I require value since I’m a poor graduate student 🙂

Good ep. And with the summer months approaching… well, they’re here!
QOTD: Italian wines. The mishmash of DOC’s, its very uneven quality, makes it difficult to know where to jump in.

Haven’t tried a few of the wallet busters: barolo, super tuscan…a good bordeaux. Enjoy drinking muscadet. I enjoy the simple mineral taste.

Haven’t had the pleasure of the Spanish wine in general, or any South African ones either. Both I hear have some phenomenal ones to choose from.

  • Thanks you for being conscious of bargains for us po’ folks! I mean it, that’s a good thing to focus on.

“A chemical that fixes the rooms we make mistakes in.” Hahahahaha

QOTD: I have to admit that my weak varietals are all of the whites save Sauvignon Blanc, which, thanls to you and your show, I now seek out.

    I’ll give a Muscadet a whirl soon.

    Hope you’re having a blast!

  • Muscadet:
This seems like a great wine to try, but I’m leary because most white wines seem to taste like either a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon blanc. Is this a common phenomenon with new wine drinkers? Or could it be that I’m not sampling wines from different regions of the world?

    QOTD:
Piedmont! I’ve read about this great Italian region, but have not as yet had a Barbera, Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Malvasia. I’m definitely missing out!

QOTD: I have yet to try a wine from Priorat in Spain. I just started drinking Ribero de Duero wines and they are stellar. I’m part of the 91.6% but I think I’ll be trying one in a few days. Now that summer is here in Florida A nice glass of really cold white wine is great when you get home from work. Wow, come to think of it i’ve never had A wine from South Africa either, i’ve got some work to do.

  • I’ve never had Muscadet, but I have had Muscat. (I know, probably not the same thing.)

QOTD: I’ve tasted but have never really had a Shiraz/Syrah before. I’ve also never had any true Old World wines (champagne, burgundy, Bordeauxs) or Italian wines other than one pinot grigio that I didn’t particularly like *cough*Folonari*cough*. And I still haven’t had a Pinot Noir.

qotd: i think i’ve had most of the major varietals. i’ve never had a hermitage though

QOTD: After reading all the other posts I think my what have I tried list is shorter than the what I haven’t tried list. I have really been tasting Reislings, Gewurztraminer and New Zealand Pinot Noirs. I also have been doing a lot of ports and that is about it. I am fairly new to the wine world so that would explain it. I would love to try some Ice Wines from Germany, anything from the Finger Lakes area, some French and Italian wines. I really love sweet wines if you haven’t noticed can’t explain why I like Pinots from New Zealand though.

  • cgf

Good episode gary. The region as theme are my favorite episodes and always encourage me to go out and explore.

qotd: Barbaresco. I really want to try them, but they tend to be expensive. I have an ’01 Produttori di Barbaresco that I am looking forward to popping.

Gary, Touche! I was just going to ask about a muscadet show and Voila! In fact, you reviewed one I had last night! We concur. Been drinking them for decades. Here on the Chesapeake they are soldiers. QOTD: Haven’t had a super tuscan yet. I’m an Old World guy.

Excellent episode. Perfect timing as I am trying to fill out our white wine ‘summer’ needs. Had totally forgotten about muscadet, which I have enjoyed in the past. QOTD – many of the ‘Italian’ grapes.
