EP 249 Muscadet Wine Sampling

Gary samples some Muscadet wines, because some of us don’t have Franklins pouring out of our pockets.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Chereau Carre Muscadet Chateau De ChasseloirMuscadet
2005 Domaine De La Cognardiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet
2006 Pepiere Muscadet Sur LieMuscadet

I just had my first Muscadet maybe a week ago or so, and I loved it. I can’t remember the name off hand, though.

QOTD: I’m really not very familiar with much European wines in general. I used to have the misconception that all French wines were too expensive, so I just avoided that part of the store. I didn’t know there was anything other than Chianti and Super Tuscans from Italy. Only recently have I realized there are great values from France and Italy. I still don’t know what Germany has to offer aside from Riesling, which I’m not a big fan of–although, if someone can direct me toward a good, bone dry Riesling for a good price, I’d try it with an open mind.

For value, I’ve stuck mainly to South America and Australia/New Zealand. I’ve recently also gotten into South African wines. I require value since I’m a poor graduate student πŸ™‚

Yeah, we’re not all wearing Cartier watches. πŸ˜›

Millions of peaches, peaches for me.

In the 1600s you would have been using a coconut shell to drink your wine.

Lemme check. Yup. ‘Seeked’ is still not a word.

I haven’t spent much time in carrot fields.

    Brown rice with sushi?

QOTD: Muscadet. I’m sure I’ve had one but it doesn’t stick out for me. I love oysters so I’ll seek that pairing out next time.

QOTD: I have yet to taste a Lebanon wine. Masur? not yet!
I have not yet tasted a wine from Texas or Virginia.
And while I have tasted many wines from NY State, Vemont, rhode island and Mass., I have yet to taste a wine from any of these states that I would actually want to taste again.
I have tasted a wine from New Jersey. You?

    Gary,

I down load your podcast every day. I love reds and my wife loves whites. You really give me insight into wines and I have tried some based on your recommendations. I loved the Barolo session. I can’t wait to try your recommendations. I would love a wrist band if you have one. Keep up the good work.

Love the Muscadet bottle shape – it’s unique.

Greece. I’ve never had a Greek wine.

QOTD: Toss up between nice Italian wines (barolo, barbaresco), which doesn’t bother me too much, and Portugal, which I have a bottle of a Duoro called Quinta do Cao that I’m dying to try.

That reminds me, in the interest of clearing up confusion:

Muscadet = white Loire wine made from Melon grapes (see above)
Muscadelle = a different grape found in white Bordeaux blends
Muscat/Muscatel = yet another white grape used all over the world to make usually sweet dessert type wines, although I think there are a few dry ones too

Sparkling Muscatel = one of the finest wines of Idaho!

QOTD: Never had anything from Bordeaux…changing that shortly. Also, experience with whites has been fairly lacking – discovered I greatly preferred red several years ago and havent looked back (in my early twenties). The recent episodes featuring white wines are opening my eyes though.

  • Nice. Try the top cuvées of Sauvion one time. They’ll definitely bring the thunder and they last in the cellar (not like the average Musc).
QOTD: Never had an Uruguayan Tannat. Maybe it’ll change shortly as there is a Casa Filguera in the cellar.

After four and a half months of drinking pretty much ONLY loire wines, I’m actually in the mood for a change. I’ve wanted an over-the-top cali Zin for quite a while, but they don’t import american wines in small french towns in the middle of a wine growing region. πŸ™
