    Gary,

Your next roadtrip destination ? No questions. ATLANTA, Baby !!!

We got fine wines and fine sakes! . . . great beers too!!! I got bottles of Heidelberger Mannaberg wines (vinted and bottled by Winzerkeller Wiesloch) that aren’t sold in the US yet. Come on down and give it a try !

Hey G…..what other wines pair up well with the spicy food?
I’ve not had Gewurztraminer. Will seek one out for certain.
QOTD: There’s a great festival here in Kansas in September. Walnut Valley Festival…you’d need to figure out what pairs well with hillbilly (bluegrass) music and campfire smoke, but dammit it IS a good time.

This wine reminds me of a cute girl with personality and character but too much makeup. Of course I’ve only tasted the cali and wash types, so maybe the Germa/France (thanks for new word and ep Gary) types would be more natural. Dusty, with chips and salsa? i’ll definitely try that. My vote’s for Vegas, Portland or Seattle.

  • Way to educate, Gary! Good to see you give clues to the aroma and flavors of the maligned big “G” varietal.

Minneapolis, MN is a great destination. Lots of great culture, trendy restaurants and bars but please ignore our loser pro sports teams. Can you say, “Trades”?

After reading all the comments for the QOTD, it seems like everyone wants you to come to their home town, myself included. I believe you will get your biggest draw if you hold a Vaynernation Extravaganza in VEGAS. I’ll fly there in a heartbeat. Vegas AND Vaynerchuk….It doesn’t get any better than that! 😉

QOTD. What better place to be during the end of the fall or beginning of the winter than in sunny Miami, FL. Even if you hate the fish, who knows! Maybe (should I say surely) the Jets will kick their butts on Sept 23rd and you’ll be happy you came! Or you can come for the Dec 2nd game!!!

    GO GV!

  • Excellent reviewing, Gary. I had never even heard of Gewurztraminer, and now I’m looking forward to trying it.

Have your web guys develop “buttons/widgets” so we can put Wine Library on our blogs.

Oh, the poison ivy has gotten worse and I am now on drugs to clear it up…

Gary … you’re a nut case! Cucumber salad … my late mother was Ukranian … we did cucumber salad at home. On the Russian thing … my mother used to warn me not to let the kids at school know I was half Ukie … the hate thing would wax and wane as relations with the former Soviet Union did as well.

My first gerwurztraminer was a 1964 Willm. This dates me.

Too bad you drank the `04 Malivoire first. (Although starting youngest to oldest is the way to go.) You had a precocious high school kid sitting in with some guys with PhD’s!

As you may know, when gerwurtz gets fully ripe it sends out a fabulous scent to all the birds and animals in the district. Many (non-Alsatian) growers don’t allow the fruit to hang fully for fear of animal theft and pick early-ish. Your notes on the `04 Malivoire smacked of “chaptalization.” The “fruity pebbles” remark and later the “damp towel” comment all harked, in my experience, towards chaptalization. It was also a surprise to see a winery with a, what appears to be, French name using the German spelling of gewurztraminer, with an umlaut! The French (normally) do not use the umlaut as that is a German thing from 1870 and Bismarck. (Latinish shift away from the OE, UE thing)

After this experience, your palate went on to the austere, aristrocrates of the gewurz world. It seems those two years were not the ripest in that part of the world … with 2000 being similar to the 2000 German vintage.

Anyway … as those great Alsatian wines “languish” on your shelves that keeps the price down for guys like me who just adore this grape … especially from Alsace.

I collect these wines and have quite a few of the 1983s in my cellar… they are still outstanding with great acidity to “keep” them. I invariably drink gewurztraminer with Thanksgiving turkey!

Keep up your fantastic missionary work for wine! The US needs you!

Great episode as always. I’ve never had a Gewurztraminer, but I’ll definitely try and find one the next time I go out for spicy food (which shouldn’t be very long…)

I’ll add my call for the Finger Lakes, and Ithaca in particular. It’s a city with great restaurants, great fall foliage, fantastic wines, and plenty of Vanaics I’m sure!

QOTD – My vote is for San Diego. It also looks like there are a lot of votes for LA out there. What about a 2 night SoCal tour? San Diego is a great place to come to. Let me know if you need any help planning it.

Was I just imagining (it was after 12:00 midnight after a long hard day of work I could have been seeing THINGS) I thing it was at the toll booth for the Goethals bridge can any one clarify this!
