Hey there! Do you ever do any features on beer? I know that you have a pretty good selection of beers @ wine library, cuz I buy from there all the time, but I was wondering if you’d ever do a wine library tv video on some micro-brews?

  • Hey Gary,

you asked for it, now live with it. I just posted the first comment to WLTV in iTunes’ German Store. It’s hasn’t appeared yet, because it’s still being checked for swearwords and other dangerous content. My comment translates about like this (hope my English isn’t too bad):

    Gary pins every wine down

This host shouts, bits the glass or sits in the snow with a t-shirt to test the effect of temperature on wine.

Gary Vaynerchuk is Director of Operations of the Wine Library. In his daily show he tries three or four different wines. But he’s not doing it like an English lord would do. His affections rather reminds of a stadium announcer in a football arena. (No show without the Jets sticker.)

But the most important thing is: He characterises a wine’s aroma so that the viewer tastes it, too. Thereto he often uses unorthodox comparisons and metaphors. And every single one helps to pin the taste down exactly. The comparison with the taste of soy sauce is part of the repertoire as is the image of knocking over a deer, sliting it open with a knive and biting it.

Vaynerchuk also sees himself on a mission. It’s about nothing less than Changing the Wine World. He hammers into his community not to believe in regulations. Training your palate and making your own decisions are the only teachings a real “Vayniac” obeys. (By the way: There is episode 148 in the archive on tv.winelibrary.com. In that one Vaynerchuk shows how to train your palate. Especially the last minutes of that episode are well worth watching.)

  • Great episode. I’ve had Tannat once before and you’ve got me craving more.

QOTD: Love the original WL t shirt. It has been a fun conversation piece, reminiscent of wine, but not in your face!

  • Gary,

Interesting show today, especially the first two wines, which I’ve never tried before.

QOTD: The wristband, of course. Love it with some business-type clothes when I’m lecturing at the University! The kids dig it too.

Your photo is coming soon, I just need to find the perfect location in Trier to shoot it. Probably will end up being the Weingarten at Palais Kesselstatt across from the Cathedral in Trier, because I’m imaginative like that. ;o)

I’ve never had a Tannat but was talking with a friend about them just yesterday. I’ll definitely order a few from WL after your review.

    Gary,

Your production schedule is staggering. Do you post tasting notes from the episodes anywhere for those of us who don’t have the time to watch every episode?

  • Had Tannat from Virginia and not a fan but will have to try the Monterrey version. Never had a Arneis though. May try that as well. Muscats in orange and black are already on the shelves here. Every week one is opened.

Schwag…. free wristbands always great but the T-shirts especially the original Vayniac are still my favorites.

QOTD: hands down, free shipping is the coolest, as it allows me to try things i otherwise might not order, considering adding $30 per case can make an affordable wine unapproachable, without free shipping

QOTD: The wristband was cool, but I have to second (or third, or 100th) the ‘free shipping’ comment. I suppose that isn’t schwag, and it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with WLTV… but it’s WLTV that brings me to the site, and the free shipping that keeps me ordering.

Best schwag actually came from the SF Party…those wine glasses are killer. Wristbands are different and very entertaining especially when you break one out at a party in order to drink your wine.

Really enjoyed the espisode. I have never tried Tannat but probably will now. Wine continues to change to new world tastes and demand. Remember when you couldn’t approach a Barbaresco or Barolo for ten years?

    Ciao

The tannat and arneis are hard to find information about on my favorite grape glossaries. The tannat sounds really good!

QOTD: I like the NFL football with the Vaniac label on one side and your favorite NFL player’s autograph on the other. Woops! I peaked ahead at Friday’s big anouncement!!! Sorry, Gary, I didn’t mean to steal your thunder.
A wine glass with the Vaniac label would be the coolest.

  • Nice haircut….

On the friend thing…I am now linked up on twitter, facebook and corkd. I haven’t set up a myspace…I’ve decided that I am too late for that fad to set one up now.

We generally dodge whites but have recently been venturing into Burgundies and Sauternes. I will have to find the 2005 Ascheri Arneis…my wife is a big citrus fan. Thanks for the pointer.

I am a big fan of Rosenblum wines … but I never would have thought to try the black muscat. I’ll give it a whirl sometime.

    QOTD: No schwag yet…

Do you have any 20-30 year old tannat hanging around in the cellar we could purchase? I really hate the fact that the oldest wine I seem to be able to find in a store around here is like 1999 and that’s rare itself. I’m trying to buy some extras right now that I can hold for 10 years or so and pop later, but it’s hard on a tight budget. I don’t think i’ve ever had something that has been at it’s peak age. My wristband picture will be coming soon.

That reminds me, QOD: the four-bagger wine tote! There’s room for a bottle, a second bottle (if the occasion calls for it), a backup bottle (in case your bottle is corked) and a decoy bottle!

Now have you got anything for toting stemware around?
