A dumb Rhein king

My ears will be ringing for the rest of the day now 😀

QOTD: I would love to. They all would need to be priced at the three buck chuck range though. Maybe that should be the cork'd contest or challenge. 365 reviews. One a day for a year. The peeps that do it, they get something special.

Classic! Though I thought today was laid-back friday?

Just my 2 cents on the Cousino Macul, which I had a week or two ago. I thought the 2004 vintage of the Antiguas Reserva was much better than the 2005. I thought the 2004 had a bit more depth and elegance going for it.

QOTD: I would if I could, but I probably can’t responsibly buy and pay for 365 bottles of wine in a year. However, a couple of the shops that I go to have frequent free tastings and I try to take advantage as much as possible. I have discovered some good stuff that way.

Gary, with your charisma you could sell ice to an Eskimo, Kryptonite to Superman, sunsets to the blind, and failed policies to the Bush Administration. Great show…way to close out a fantastic week…thank you for your ridiculous level of enthusiasm.

QOTD: 365 different wines in 365 days is no problem…trying to down 365 different bottles of wine is another story. Since joining WLTV forum back in Dec. and becoming a regular viewer of the show; I have started a tasting group, joined a wine appreciation class, and I go to all the public tastings I can. By doing this I know I have tasted over 365 wines already this year and I’m sure I can do another 365 before year end.

Quite an entertaining episode! I am so grateful the family business is wine not God… That kind of firebrand, shoot from the hip proselytizing would be scary! Thanks for perking up my Friday evening

QOTD- I’m working on it, and this might be the very truest thing you’ve ever said on WLTV- ya’ gotta’ be out there tryin’ all kinds of new styles/grapes/vintages WINES. I’ll try my best!

excellent episode! i’d love to be able to try a new wine everyday, but not in the cards…sadly. i do appreciate the kick in the a$$, and have tried a few new varieties since watching the WLTV. some i loved (like the Salavai Monile Valpolicella Ripasso (inspired by the amarone show)) and some, not so much. but it’s always fun giving something new a shot!!!

I’d been thinking that you were starting to tone down on us recently and then you go do something like that. I think thats a bit much to ask from your more well off viewers, much less a poor graduate student like me. Good thinking though. I never buy more than 2 bottles of anything (except for the Sunday Mountain SB, that was the best under 10 wine I’ve ever had).

HOly Shit dude….that was awesome…I love it when you get on the soapbox. Did lizy feed you Jolt, mixed with sugar, mixed with the opposite of Ritalin and send you to work? I loved it! Keep that passion.
I’m totally going to sign up for a cork’d account now after that tirade!
QOTD – I am in Gary, more knowledge the better

Great episode, so Gary how do you really feel about Melissa’s question?
QOTD: can I get free shipping on 365 bottles of wine?

What an episode … made me want to stand on a hill top rip my shirt off and yell ROCK and ROLL!!!

You are 100% spot on too with the advise too on trying all types of wine. Hollywood makes a movie and says that Pinot Noir is great and Merlot sucks. It was a punch line to a joke not advice. As for the advise on not buying multiple bottles of the same wine I part ways a little. I say when you find something you like buy it and buy plenty and enjoy and share with friends, just don’t stop there keep trying more. That is where wine tasting comes in hit all the tasting you can find. I give that advise one time and the response was I live in a not so big town and we just don’t have that many. HELL I live in DRY COUNTY in Alabama and can find 3 to 5 tastings every week less than 30 miles from my home (it is all legal too). So don’t give me that crap get out and look they are there.

QOTD: 365 different wines this year no problem, do you really want me to back down to just 365!

Gary continues to up the ante.. I can’t believe how often I’m surprised by WLTV.

QOTD: In order for me to taste 365 wines in 365 days, I’m gonna have to go to a LOT of tastings, and do a LOT of spitting! I like that challenge. Not sure I can do it, but it might be damn fun trying. 😉

My wife and I visited the Casablanca Valley last December. We thought the Casablanca SV was very good, but the Vina Mar was even better. Unfortunately, it’s not available in the States yet. We bought some at the winery for 5 bones a bottle. One of the best SVs I’ve ever had — at any price. Flavor profile sort of like Gary described for the Nimbus, including the creamy finish, but very pronounced apricot/peach rather than pineapple fruit.

The Casablanca Valley is remarkably similar to Napa geographically, but it’s not very large, so production will never be in the same league.

P.S. I nuke my wines all the time. If I don’t finish a wine I’ve opened, I pump out the air and put it in the fridge. The next day, I nuke it before drinking. If it wasn’t for nuking I wouldn’t drink wine as often as I do. Save the nukes!

    I second the chills Mossy.

Gary, you’ve brought me out of hiding with this episode!! I have been a lurker since episode 40. I’m in and I promise I won’t be a OSW!

Let’s start with ASS = 26, Male, and I just relocated to NH from Manhattan.

I must say I am a bit puzzled by the microwaving of wine. As a chemist I don’t claim to understand the aging of wine, it is a very complex process with several competing reactions. But using microwaves can induce reactions and in this case could cause some these reactions to occur and potentially create “off” flavors.

I think you should taste two bottles on WLTV, one at RT and one out of the fridge and then microwaved to desired temp.

I love WLTV and I’m in on the 365 in 365!!

You were totally insane but that’s ok I guess. Re: QOTD — My cellar purchases are dwindling because I get tired of drinking the same wine. My max was 6 bottles, now its 2-4 or even 0 because I get more pumped about trying something new every day. Don’t know if I can hit 365 but there are days where I can catch up because I try one at lunch and trash another one at dinner because it stinks and then move on to another because I am bored. Its easy to cover some ground that way. Next episode: maybe a little less caffeine…?

GV on steroids tonight!! That was Ooooozing energy man!! Another classic episode. I can not wait to see Cork’d on a bit of steroids as well: for example, It’d be nice to get both the professional ratings and the public’s rating on each bottle reviewed; put that and people will flock to the site…
QOTD: “try 365 wines /yr to get the necessary knowledge”. GV, I agree with you that one has to try as many wines to get the knowledge. But, remember, wine is not cheap (at least good ones) and as much as I think that people are stuck up on following “wine scores” I find myself involuntarily running after the 90 pointer and ignoring the one that RP or WS OR GV gave it 89. So $$$ is a factor here, especially when one’s pallate is not that experienced an needs a lot of training. What would be an awesome idea is if you put up a list of say 30 different reasonably priced different wines (widely available pls; thinks of the folks north of the border too) that would give a representative hands on crash course on key aromas, flavours, acidity, tannins, sugar, etc… Consider it as an initiation and orientation session for the new wine lovers.
    Cheers

QOTD: We tried around 50 wine in the Willamette Valley this week; don’t know if we can keep it up at that pace, but it’s a good start.
Just what is the 1st rated wine show on the internet? and why haven’t I heard of it? and why isn’t it Gary’s?

Question of the Day? I have no idea; I can’t seem to get to the end of the episode today no matter what I do. By reading others comments, however, I surmize the gauntlet went down on tasting 365 different wines per year. Jeezzz, I do that in a month; what kind of lush does what make me?

Gotta go now; more tasting to do. For educational purposes only, of course. Oh, I like the taste also.

  • It is almost midnight and I’m watching this on my laptop in a Clinton, NJ bed & breakfast. I’ve been trying my best not to bother the wife while she sleeps and GV brings the THUNDER! I swear, I wanted to jump around and throw things after watching that closing monologue. Incredible show! Saturday afternoon we will be making our first trip to the Vayniac homeland (not exactly convenient for us North Carolina natives) and now I just know I’m gonna be broke walking out of Wine Library. Can’t wait to see the grounds tomorrow and thanks for everything you do here. Keep an eye out for a tall, overweight guy failing in his attempt to grow a beard next to a women who is clearly more attractive and much smarter.

I just started using corkd this week and yes, it does need some serious work. One of the biggest problems is simply people not entering the names of wines in a logical manner. Would be great if the main entry for a wine worked like a wiki where anyone in the community could edit/approve additions or changes. Just really hate seeing multiple entries simply because there was no vintage, something was misspelled, or someone simply likes a different order to the wine name.

GV with some CRAZY energy today!!! I don’t even know what to say right now I’m still stunned by the ridiculousness of todays show. I’m still pretty new to the wine world and very new to the thunder show but so far enjoying every minute of it. My goal now is to develop my palate and smell enough so that I can actually confirm (or deny) some of the flavors GV or other wine critic tells me is in a certain wine. Props Gary for renewing my interest in wine and keep up the good work!
