Loving Daily Grape, GV. This is the first WLTV episode I’ve watched since it came out. Wanted to go OLD school.

QOTD: Imaginary story: yesterday, I walked into Wally’s to say hello to Manuel, their Italian buyer. Lo and behold, there was Gary, doing his own zoomie zooms with the wine bottles. I got to taste some Palo Lato Chard with him and shoot the s*** with him about all the great wine stores in the world and how I’m loving his new show. I bought him a bottle of Chinon to taste and then hit the road.

Dimes for Gary V. – gotta support my daily Gary V. addiction, take it daily like a vitamin. No Gary and I might just regress to Boones! That would be tragic. Can’t have that. As always, great episode. Lalande in my tummy is oh so yummy.

So it’s POO-yak not POE-yak. Good to know.

Here is what you do: first, anyone who wants in recommends one wine they want to see you taste. Pick four at random.

Then, the commenters who recommended each of these wines each provide you with a video telling us, the commenting public, WHY they deserve an iPhone.

Run one each on Monday through Thursday, then invite the commenters to pick a winner (plus, I guess, anyone else the commenters can cajole into commenting).

QOD: since you’re loving the Pichon-Lalande, here you go: about a decade ago, long before I knew enough for it to make much difference to me, I was invited to a benefit dinner (the guest of honor being Mme Lencquesaing herself) and several vintages of Pichon-Lalande, going back to 1959. I can still taste the pencil lead now.

Gary–Your show is great: I’ve never recommended an internet show to anyone or even watched one regularly until I discovered WLTV. Since then I turned on friends, colleagues at work and even my mother. Have they all become as addicted? I doubt it, but with time I think “word of mouth” is the best way to go about spreading the joy of WLTV. I wouldn’t get so obsessed with the number of comments. I know how you feel–I write weekly and its important to have feedback (I have people emailing or calling me almost daily)–but there is something about building a trackrecord, gaining trust that takes time. I’d measure it in years, not months. You’re doing a great job. Deep down inside you must know that; trust your instincts and keep the shows coming.

You know, speaking of expanding the Vayner Nation (did I spell that right?), have you ever thought of doing a “class” or a show at major universities? Maybe it’s because I’m just outta college or maybe because that’s how I got into wine, but I know I met some great people and learned great things at one of those gigs. There are college groups that will certainly pay to have you show up for a night to talk and taste with young, impressionable minds (the next generation of Vayniacs!). Anyway, that’s my two cents. BTW, if you’re ever in Santa Monica, check out Bodega Wine Bar… they have some fabulous malbecs 🙂

  • Man, you get it done GV! Thanks for sharing another fun episode.

QOTD: Sometimes I ask some of our store customers if they watch the show. Some say they watch it. Unfortunately, I haven’t met someone on the street yet who openely and enthusiastically claims to be a fan. Myself, I’m proud to admit it. I suspect more wine people may be watching it than they let on. I say this because I notice how some of the customers that come into the store now describe wine in more Vaniacish way. More and more people are using words and phrases that seem to come out of the WLTV dictionary. I’m hearing “bringing on the thunder” and “oldworld-new world” more along with other words that I see on the show, but not in WS, Decanter, or WA.
    The WL influence is visible.

Boy do I looooove Bordeaux’s! Thanks so much for doing that episode GV, right up my alley. Cheers!
QOTD: I was at a deli/wineshop in L.A. buying a bunch of wine with some wine blog host and the guy ringing us up looked up in shock to see GV himself standing there, he praised him and know I’m a celeb at that shop. Good fun.

I’d really like to see you do the label show you were talking about. For people just getting into wine like myself, I know how labels can be misleading and it’s hard not to be biased going down the wine aisle.

  • Bossman

#301 going strong. Ah, yeah, I’m really enjoying having to wait another
    @#$&# day, you tease.

I have no interest in the phone, but you could post an overlay of a word each day for a period of time (a week?) at different points in the show that would ultimately spell out a phrase. Then ask all entrants to email the phrase, number the emails and then pick a winner of all correct entrants out of a hat (or spit bucket). At least you’ll know they actually watched each episode (or was in contact with someone who did).

I have another package for you but I was hoping some other Vayniacs might be stepping up. Guys/gals this guy brings you this quality stuff day in and day out and you can’t scrounge up a Thundercat or two? At a minimum a comment isn’t going to cost you any time or money…… don’t be slackers. You don’t want to see Gary cry do you?

Pauillac delivers the thunder – whether you’re a fan of old world or new world. Fruit with balance; cigar box and lead pencil with structure and depth. Yummy.

Do you ever add your own reply to the comments. It would be nice to see your responses here. I know you answer lots of personal emails- how about responses in the comments. That may lure the lurkers.
Wishing you all the best and much thanks for all you have done here.

Two ideas for the I-Phone give-away:

Either give it to anyone named Al from San Diego who leaves a message today, or just do a random drawing of anyone leaving sa message today. Personally, I prefer the former. Thanks Gary!

    Great Show!…very informative…how about a show comparing a $50-75 wine from 3 or 4 different regions…
QOTD:…I can’t get my friends, serious wine lovers to take the time to watch your show, I’m totally bummed that I have no one to share the show’s quirks with.

  • Hey Gary,

I’ve haven’t kept up with your posts for the last 3 weeks. I’ve been traveling a ton and have had some friends getting married. It is the usual summer stuff.

I bet that the reason the comments are down is because a lot of the people on here are taking some time off and aren’t around their computers.

QOTD: Here is my suggestion for you on how to increase the comments… combine twitter and your video blog togetter. provide a text summary of your show that gets sent to peoples cell phones. you could probably even use twitter to do this. for people whoes phones can handle video have a edited version of your show (5-10 min long) they can view while on the go.

Those are my 2 cents… The idea above needs a little work but i hope you understand the direction i’m going to with it.

    Cheers,

    Rick

  • Gary,

Been trying to catch up on back episodes since Conan. Still love what you’re doing.

Firstly, for your iPhone giveaway. It should be interactive…may sound stupid but review a easy to find wine (still tasty though) and have people guess your score on it. I’m sure a little too simplistic, but first thing that popped in my head.

Secondly, I think some people are scared to buy wine based on things other than labels or point scores. I know I don’t want to be let down if I’m throwing down $20+ on a bottle of wine that is unknown to me. In the same turn, it’s all about trying new things and learning what you do and don’t like. Basically, I think the show about labels would be a great one.

    Keep it up!

    Cheers,
    E
