I had my second bottle of the Riondo Prosecco last night. Both times the colour has been completely clear (nothing like the wine you tasted). It’s definitely the same wine, but I guess that this episode is 3 years old and they may have changed their style? I wasn’t a fan of the wine either time (I had to try it twice to be sure I wasn’t wrong), as it wasn’t clean or crisp; it was sugary and artificial and just wasn’t fresh. Although, it did improve quite a bit when paired with gingerbread cookies (in my desperation, the only thing I thought might help…). Is it normal for NV Prosecco to change this much over the vintages? I’m not saying it changed just because I don’t agree on the score, but the change in colour was massive.

QOTD: Herve Mathelin Brut Rose Champagne for reasonable champagne. For other sparkling wine, I love the Pierre-Henri Ginglinger Cremant d’Alsace.

  • Chris C.

Great show on Prosecco. WL should check out Rotari NV Brut for a nice Italian sparkler with a high QPR.

  • I cannot pin down individual wines, since it’s been a while, but I am a big fan of Moscato d’Asti.

Again playing catch up…Gary, when you said M & R Asti I bust out laughing because that was about the only wine-type beverage that my wife would drink for the longest time (and still does). I got her to branch out to Toad Hollow Risque, which she and I both enjoy and the price is right.

QOTD: Sparklings are my favorites, so this is an easy list. GH Mumm Carte Classique, Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label, Piper-Heidsick Cuvee Brut, Mumm Napa Brut Prestige, Cordinu Blanc de Noir, Saint Hilaire Brut(when I’m in a “steely” mood), Charles de Frere blanc de noir…I could go on and on…

Come on down to Texas big boy and we’ll show you how to drink Asti Spumante with a Corona beer chaser……Just kidding but a good sparkling Shiraz such as a bottle of Black Queen followed by a few Corona’s is always good. Thank God I don’t usally drink beer on a regular basis or I would be worthless all the time…..GREAT SHOW…Thanks for introing the Prosseco’s to us whom knew nothing about them.

QOTD GV, I prefer Spanish Cava and Prosecco over champagne, but I almost always have Moscato d’Asti from Piedmont. True, sweeter than Prosecco but a crowd pleaser and a wife pleaser which is top priority at my house!!

Me thinks 9 minutes is too short. What? was there a taxi with a meter running? And I thought you were going to go off on the “man who always wear a sweatshirt in NE.” Gary, it’s not a sweatshirt, it’s a hairshirt Gary!! The man’s exterior is assembled in a foreign sweatshop!!

    Dear Gary,

Don’t get me wrong, but Proseccos are very irregular and tend to be a big disappointment most of the times. I bet to say that more than 90% of zillions of bottles produced every year do not stand a chance against a regular Cava or non-vintage Champagne. You can always say Proseccos are more joyful, an additional teaspoon of sugar to make the ladies happy, etc. But, for the serious connaisseur, Proseccos are usually something to avoid.

BTW, Nino Franco Rustico is one of the few exceptions (I have not tried the other two; will do soon).

Best sparkling ever? Tough one… I can name a couple: Tarlant Brut Prestige 1997, Veuve Clicquot Reserve 1996, Henriot 1989.

Best everyday sparking? Codorniu NV Brut.

Finally, were you tasting the Proseccos at room temperature? Don’t you think the ‘hot’ CO2 kill your palate? It’s like having a hot coke… ugh.

    Cheers

I LOVE the Vonnegut reference on your chalkboard, and if I’m the only semi-lurker who caught it, I think I deserve some kind of shout out. (A working knowledge of 20th century American lit should be worth something.)

QOTD: I like Moscato d’Asti, but I’ll have to try proseco.

    Gary,
I an a HUGE champagne and sparlking wine lover…and my house champagne is the one your store carries, the Charles de Fere in both the rose and the standard brut. For 7.99 and 8.99, how the hell can you go wrong. Thanks for these hidden gems! My favortie continues to be the Cliquot Grande Dame 1996, but the Dom 96 was blowaway…also loving the Henriot and the Deutz Rose 2000- which I opened up for my 40th at Rods in Whitehouse Station, awesome place!

J E T S ! PS, got to meet Kenny Obrien back in the day when we picked him up and he was doing promotion work for my Dad’s company back then, hell of a nice guy and wish he panned out better for the green.

    Best,
    Steve

QOTD: There’s no such thing as a “favorite” wine, you know that! A couple of my favorites would have to be Mumm Napa Blanc de Noir, and Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noir. I think we can all probably guess a big reason why.

Well… there might very well be good Proseccos, but a lot of them
are dull and made for the mass-market.
It’s a little bit tough to find the good stuff, IMHO, because it’s
a very fashionable drink (here in europe) and just too much crap
    floating around everywhere.
    Beware.

  • I’ve enjoyed Conte D’Alba Moscato D’Asti — very consistent. Light, flavorful and, most importantly, consistently good.

I want some prosecco now! I will look for some this weekend.

QOTD: Haven’t had many sparkling wines, but the best I have had so far was a Taittinger Brut. Nice and crisp, not sweet, and good mouth feel. Plan on trying some Cliquot and all that other jazz for some special occasions in the future.

    Have a great weekend, Gary.

QOTD: ’96 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame and ’95 Pommery Cuvee Louise.

    Still haven’t had a Prosecco that I’ve liked. I guess I should keep trying… 🙂

my absolute favorite sparkling wine is Billecart Salmon Rose though it is very difficult to find and ridiculously expensive, Schramsburg Rose from Napa is my favorite US sparkler.

Prosecco is a great alternative to almost anything else for Thanksgiving turkey.
