Have found South African wines very hit or miss, some have been awful. Not sure a couple years later that they have gotten any better. QOTD-Honeynut Chex http://www.winelx.com

  • I’m not into Pinotage myself. I do buy a bottle every once in a while, and then I drink it when I’m in a strange mood. When I’m already relaxed, not when I want to relax. But not a very enjoyable varietal for this boy. QOTD: Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted Oat Cereal, OR, Go Lean. ONLY.

I have always been a big fan of South African whites. This episode makes me excited to try the other end of the spectrum…I’m pretty excited!

QOTD: I was a big Cocoa Pebbles fan, but now I’m more of a Granola and Oatmeal Raisin Crisp type fan (love these with banana!)

QOTD: I am totally hooked on Ginger Granola mixed with French Vanilla Yogurt and some fruit; blue berry, strawberry , mango, what ever is in the fridge.

I have tried a few S. African wines and also found them to be damn good for the money. Thanks again for an enjoyable AM wake-up episode before work:) Yes that means I’m behind a day.

I like the new intro Gary! Addin’ a little bit of polish – nice!

QOTD: Well, of course there’s the classic LUCKY CHARMS… but my latest addiction is the Fruit Loops with Marshmallows! It’s tough, cause i have to go to Walmart to get them (that’s the only place that has them around here) and I hate Walmart… but when I’m there that’s what I have to get!

  • Hallelujah for your comments on points, GV. There’s nothing wrong with wines being awarded points, stars or anything else — you just can’t follow critics blindly and expect to be happy all the time. The important thing to keep in mind is that the critics tend to be consistent about their likes and dislikes, so you need to keep track of how you, personally rate wines against those critics. If you discover that you’re not liking the merlots that a critic is scoring 90 and above, then you know not to buy what that critic likes. And the reverse is true, too: If you find yourself agreeing with a certain critic, stick with him or her. Also, you have to listen to their descriptions of the wines. You don’t just go see every movie Roger Ebert gives thumbs-up to — you listen to what he says about them, and make your decision from there.

After 321 episodes, I’ve finally left lurker mode…How about a shout out on the blackboard for the streaking Colorado Rockies (W10). Are the Mets about to lose their playoff spot??

Remember The Swedish Chef’s Croonchy Stars cereal? Gone before its time, I say. I like Peanut Butter Bumpers with fresh banana….

Yesterday, I watched a really old episode on Youtube where you were reviewing Canadian ice wine and you then (for the hell of it) took a sip of Molson beer and rated it. Why not promote a good beer! Infact why not do a Barley Wine show. Barley wines can be amazingly complex!

Irish oatmeal. The steel cut kind. Beautiful nuttiness. And I can put just about anything in it, like raisins, cinnamon, honey, maple syrup. So what’s your favorite cereal?

  • Love WLTV !!!

Gotta call you out, though. It’s “palate,” not “palette” (as in painting – or pallet, as in bottling day). It’s an easy one to mess up but good to know the difference.

Ever since you picked up tones of Apple Jacks cereal I have been readdicted, (that most certainly isn’t a word) as I was in my childhood.

QOTD-I’m a grown up but I don’t want to grow up. As a kid it was Frosted Rice Krinkles and I still gravitate to sweet cereals-gonna have to go with Golden Grahams but they have a quick sog factor if you don’t eat them quickly enough.

Too bad the Pinotage was overoaked: they can be wonderful wines.

QOTD: I’m a huge cold cereal fan, and lately I can’t get enough of Post Selects Cranberry Almond Crunch. I’ve been really digging the cranberries in it. Not too many cereals offer those little great tasting berries.

QOTD: Cereals: Kashi — Good and good for you — and Honey Nut Cheerios. I haven’t had too many SA wines, molderbosch sauvignon blanc and Graham Beck Pinno (pinnotage), which is very unusual and I like with grilled meat and even pizza. I admit I wouldnt have gone for a merlot or bordeaux-style blend, but I’m intreagued by your opinion of the region. I’ll have to try.

  • QOTD: As a kid it was Frosted Flakes. Now it’s Corn Flakes with Half & Half (light cream).

I like wine history so thanks for the Pinotage lesson. Further explanation on the name: The Cinsault grape is also known as Hermitage. Pino (from Pinot Noir) + tage (Hermitage) = Pinotage.

You gave a pass on the Seidelberg because of the oak monster. I’ve never had a Pinotage. Should I go with the Kanonkop 2004 to show me what a Pinotage should be?

Gary does an episode on South African reds and I’m leaving for France tonight to watch the USA play South Africa in the Rugby World Cup… Coincidence? I doubt it.

Regarding the Rustenberg, have a bottle in my cellar right now and I’m very excited to open it, although I have to admit that for myself and amongst the people I know who follow South African wine, the most respected winery right now is Boekenhoutskloof. Their Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are some of the best wines I’ve ever had. Anywhere.

  • Billr
