Hey Gary! No more sports wallowing. You think your in sports hell? I live in San Diego (think Chargers & Padres) and I’m originally from Chicago (think Bears)–that’s a world of hurt. But guess what? I’m not in to sports so I don’t give a sh_t. Now that’s the way to live pain free.

QOTD–I was had a great Chard from Niles, MI. My future wife and I were sitting having dinner overlooking the vineyard. Loved the wine, so we bought a case. When we got it home it wound up only good enough for cooking (barely). Proof that set (mind set) and setting (place) are some of the keys to wine enjoyment.

Last, what’s happen to the Mexican wine show you were going to do. I hooked you up with the wine importer (he talked to you) about it. Seemed like a good idea. The Baja (ah ha)is a prime wine growing industry. Is it good? Make up your own mind–but like them or not they are definitely terrior driven.

Hey Gary, how about your opinion on some Texas wines? I know that they don’t have very good reputations (which is understandable considering the harsh weather), but I personally think that Messina Hof produces some good wines.

GV, i think comment totals suffer when everyone knows you are out of town.

QOTD: Unionville Winery’s Hunters Red (NJ) was drinkable as I recall.

QOTD: Most interesting wine outside the big four in “America”…I am going to stretch that to include Canada and say Gewurztraminer from British Columbia. They grow most of their grapes in the Okanogan Valley, which is just up the road from the Columbia Valley in WA. It is a bit cooler there and the better winyards produce a Gewurz with nice acidity balanced with some fruit and the spice that a good Gewurz can bring. Unfortunately, hard to find in the US.

Been lurking for a while, but decided it was time to step out. Really have enjoyed the show, you are doing some good work

As for the QOTD: 2004 Becker Vineyards Cabernet-Syrah. They are growing a huge assortment of grapes in the Texas Hill Country. Worth your time to check into

QOTD. I’m not sure which is the best. I’ve had very good wines from Barboursville Winery in Virginia — including a Pinot Grigio, a Bordeaux blend and a Nebbiolo. I don’t think they make a Chardonnay. I liked a Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Syrah blend from Dos Cabezas in Arizona. I liked several of the wines from Hickory Creek Winery in Michigan. Some years ago I had a seriously good Zinfandel from Stone’s Throw Winery in Wisconsin, but I think it was made from California-grown purchased grapes, so I don’t know if that counts. I’ve also had wines I liked from Biltmore Estate in North Carolina.

  • Sangio, obviously Intercourse is overrated.

Kudos to those who mentioned Sakonnet Vineyards in Rhode Island. Good stuff.

QOTD: Most of the wine I’ve had outside the Big 4 have not been good, so I’ve really stayed away for the most part. I had a white from Vermont that was absolutely terrible – extremely sweet and nothing more interesting than white grape juice.

QOTD: I haven’t had any that I thought were good. I visited the French Lick Winery in French Lick, Indiana this past week and thought I was going to double over from laughter when I tasted their wine. 5 years ago I would have thought it was a drinkable wine. To make it worse, the food they served was more horrific than their wine. Good show and sorry for not posting in a while.

Sad. I’ve had some very good Virginia wines — none of them Chardonnay, however. Cab Franc, Viognier, even Horton’s Touriga Nacional blend. Shame that you couldn’t have featured some of them.
