  • QOTD: The last bottle of wine I opened did both. It was a 1997 Marcarini Barolo Brunate and the last of several bottle of wine my wife and I brought back from Tuscany seven years ago. The trick was, when I cut the foil, the cork was wet and sticky so I thought the wine would be bad. The treat was it was fantastic.

QOTD: Last trick was … cooked Dry Creek Meritage. Last treat was … fishing the Cape Lookout Albacore Festival with #1 son (12 yrs old). Weather sucked, no fish whatsoever, and nearly got us killed running the inlet in 7 foot seas, BUT had a great time with my son nonetheless!

GV, send ME the wristband and I’ll send YOU a pic!! Pinky swear, dude.

    Go Red Sox!

Ok, so I had to get that outta the way. And although it is good to be a Boston fan now, it wasn’t so a several years ago (not to mention the 86 years in between winning the World Series!) Never fear GV, your Jets will get better at some point!

Good episode today, thanks for the Halloween special! Too bad there weren’t any good ones, but I had to laugh at the dentist/BMX description! And you better watch out…there might be a John Thompson III who watches your show!

QOTD: Trick- The French language…I’m still tricked at what words mean.

Treat- a wine tasting with friends with the theme “Wines that shouldn’t exist and/or are scary.” We had a pinotage, a sparkling red shiraz, and an Oak Monster wine with a printout of your picture from http://www.theoakmonster.com. Utterly classic. Then we finished with some knock-em sock-em Malbec and some port. mmmmm….

And thanks for the free shipping! That was awesome!

QOTD: Trick: My cat Tigger likes to go out the front door, but I can trust him because he never goes anywhere. One day I went out to the back yard while he was supposed to be out front and he was walking on the top of the wall (walls in back are too tall to jump). I got a ladder but he got away from me and Pavo (gray cat) climbed up the ladder and jumped into the neighbor’s back yard. Tigger came back, but I had to go around the block with cat carrier, catnip, and cell phone to neighbor’s yard who wouldn’t come to the door but acknowledged my quest through the window so I waded through 5 foot tall thick clumps of weeds and piles of junk, intermittently saw Pavo who wouldn’t come to me, so I sat down in the weeds and called my husband to get off of work and come get his cat which he did.
Treat: glass of B. R. Cohn cabernet 2003 tonight.

    I love the Halloweeny labels.

Hey G, talking about weird labels, yesterday I was flipping with the SAQ wine magazine Cellier and saw 2 very interesting wines worthy of the thunder and Halloween show:
    1-Old bastard Shiraz 2004 (Barossa, Kaesler, Australia): 132$!! (RP 90-95; 95-100 for the 2003)
2-The Ball Buster 2005 (Barossa, Tait, Australia): 26$ (WA 92)
Only the Aussis name a limited release & high scoring 130$ wine as “The OLD BASTARD”. Cheers to the wine gurus downunder…
    Happy Halloween,

Great show Gary. Last trick: a 1985 Dominus that went south (but it was a gift, so not quite as painful). Last treat: every day with Mrs. cpd!

Thank you for another great show Gary! You know how I appreciate a good Sniffy Sniff. Haven’t posted in a while because I’ve got some back episodes to watch due to vacation in Vegas for 4 days and working way too much to make up for it. No pic from me yet because, well… I haven’t gotten my wrist band in yet ; ( Guess I could photo shop one! I filled out the form at the end of the website scavenger hunt a while back when you first posted it. I just figured they were on back order….

QOTD: Tricked – When I got married
Treated – When I got divorced

  • Good night as usual! Dig the halloween special, and it just goes to show that marketing is still controlling much of this industry when it comes to unique names and labels, and no so unique wines. But your right…get out there and try new things because you never know. When you bringing in CLC?

    QOTD:
Tricked….first got into wine with Charles Shaw and thought I got a Napa Cab for $2.00
Treat…Passed my Certified Exam and learned how to taste wines and make better purchases!!

Keep on rocking!! I will shoot a picture of my twins with their Vayniac sweat band!! (the original)

    Gary,
My comment is that your show is rad and you make wine funner. I discovered you only about 2 hours ago and havent singned off yet. But I also have a question. I read another one of your viewers comments, and they asked, “since when can you smell tannins?” This guy/girl sounded kinda bitter. Anyway. Can you really smell tannins? I always thought that tannins were detected on the toungue or left over in mouth/gums etc… after tasting/drinking. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge with us/the world!
