I'm open to wines in a box, although I feel dubious about them and have never bought one and don't have any plans to. I'm definitely not into wines in a can however, I know Coppola's even doing one of those. I tasted a cuvee de pena rose in a bottle, it wasn't awful for the $2 or 3.99 it cost wholesale.

Best Steak= Porterhouse on the grill salt & pepper only. The best!

Worst Steak= Flat Iron Steak, grizzle mania—Yuk double yuk!!

Gary, the Bandit Pinot looks clearer than our drinking water here in Leicester, Ma.

Just as I thought; box wine sucks!!!! Next you’ll be doing Carlo Rossi and other Jug wine.

If you ever, ever do a show on Rosso Di Montalcino; I pledge not to watch !!

    Woot, go Christmas pack!

QotD: Best – Flank steak with the family, some baked potatoes, and love all around.
Worst – Reheated flank steak by yourself. πŸ™

    ps. Mott rules!

Best steak – stick to the basics- steak for 1, 2, 3, 4 ………or even 10 at peter lugars….cooked the way you want it and the quality is always there

Worst steak – I think it was actually dog, but in the interior of the island of Naxos in Greece, my wife and I chose poorly……very poorly.

    comon’ give me that bottle!

When you put that on the grill it’s the best, those grill marks…mmm

  • Best Steak: Home grill rib-eye last summer. Grilled with Sraracha, Caribbean Hot sauce and Caribbean bbq sauce. Add a little salt at the end. Med-rare. Delicious.

Worst Steak: A so called “steak-burger” from Steak and Shake.

best-lomito con chimichurri raised in Argentina, grilled by an Argentine, in traditional fashion, over perfect coals, in puerto viejo- south Caribbean costa rica. Honeymoon. Shared an incredible reserve malbec.
worst-twice frozen nasty meat. grilled. smelled like fish. two bites-just to make sure it was the worst thing i’d ever eaten.

  • Worst steak, without a doubt was at Las Palmas, down the road from our house in Naples Italy. It was called a Barolo steak…we figure it was stray dog that drank cheap Barolo only hours before it made it’s way to our table.
Best steak, hard to say…I’ve had a lot of good meat πŸ™‚

  • Hey Gary! I’ve been a lurker since August (I heard about your show on Diggnation), and figured it’s high time I leave a comment πŸ˜‰
    Keep up the great work!

BTW, here’s a fantastic Petit Verdot to try: Pirramimma McLaren Vale Petit Verdot 2004 from Australia. It’s around $30 up here in Canada, but our prices are ridiculously high so I’m sure you can find it for less.

Best steak, beef medallions over arugula done to perfection on my grill with a good bottle of bordeaux and best friends.

Worst, filet mignon at KincaidΓ’??s, grisly and tasteless. Paid 70+ dollars for 12 dollar bottle of BV cab.

QOTD: Best steak that I’ve every had was an aged Fillet from Whole Foods that I prepared “Fillet au Poirve” from recipes inspired by Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa in Paris) and Evan Goldstein (Perfect Pairings) at a lady friends house. Paired with the Leeuwin 2002 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Ordered the XMAS Pack.

Worst steak ever: outback, terrible beef and slammed with seasonings

Best steak ever: Alexander’s steakhouse in Champaign Il. Tiny town off a highway, great place. Alexander’s has refrigerator’s around the room full of meat. You chose your steak. I like the tenderloin, it is supple and melts in your mouth, but I love a good ribeye, the cut is just so much more “beefy”.

  • Oh ya… I guess I should enter the contest πŸ˜‰

Best: a New York strip at this place in Victoria, BC, called Rick’s Grill

Worst: one time when I was little, I decided to reheat a steak in the microwave. Bad idea!

Best Steak – At a restaurant, I’d have to say the tri-tip from Woodranch in Agoura Hills or Morton’s NY Strip in mid-town DC. At home, easily the London Broil from Whole Foods with an Old Bay, garlic powder and black pepper spice rub.

Worst Steak – small bistro in Bordeaux, right by the train station. McDonald’s would’ve been better than that.

  • Best steak, Kobe Steak in Yokahama at $350 for the steak alone, worst, at a Scottish Steak Restaurant in London. Scots apparently don’t know what to do with a steak, thin overcooked with watery mashed potatoes and soupy peas.

This episode did not change my opinion of boxed wines. I have tried over 50 different ones so far and not one beats a $6 bottle of wine. If this is a movement, it is a poor one.

The best steak was at Cite restaurant in New York, years ago when they were good, at one of their “wine dinners”. 5 Terrific wines with a 3 course steak dinner. It was $40 / person. You can’t go there anymore. The price kept going up, the quality declined, and then they closed this year.

The very worst. Outback Steak house special steak in Lansing, MI. I couldn’t eat it.

  • I gotta say I’m a bit disappointed about the box wines…although finding one good one could be considered a suprise by some. Too bad I’m not into the white wines…I was hopeful about the sharaz. Oh well.
QOTD- Best steak I ever had was a filet mignon in the Bahamas. It literally…and I mean literally melted in my mouth. The worst steak was one I made myself. Just out of the house and on my own, made a marinade out of whatever I could find in the fridge behind the beer, and fried it up in a pan on the electric stove. It tasted like hot dogs.
