EP 391 The Wonderful World Of Petit Verdot

Oh boy Gary will be in a good mind set today as he gets to taste his boyhood love “Petit Verdot” 🙂 Honestly a grape that is on the rise with global warming.

2006 Pago del Vicario Petit Verdot Rosado
2004 Murphy Goode River Ranch Petit Verdot 2004

Qotd: had a few in Virginia this past year at a tasting that were dynamite. Unfortunately they were all done blind so I'm not sure which one was the best

  • QOTD : I haven’t tried any of these. But I will tonight d00d!

  • Sassodoro

QOTD. I have only had one 100% Petit Verdot. (Of course, most of us have had it as a component in other wines.) I would have to dig through my notes to remember exactly what it was. It was at a tasting about 6 or 8 months ago of wines from Murcia, Spain, and this one guy brought a Petit Verdot that was kind of an experimental project for them. I really liked it. I would love to try more, but I don’t see them very often.

  • QOTD: Never tried PV, tried to go buy the MG on your site but you don’t carry it so I’m going to try at a LWS to see if they have some. My wife and I love most other wines by MG so we’ll give this one a whirl.

QOTD: 1. Never had Petit Verdot other than in a blend that I can recall.
    2. N/A
    3. My next trip to the wine shop.

All those PVs look pretty inky black, like Carignan or Tannat. I’ll be curious to try a PV straight up.

  • I’ve never had a PV, although you make it VERY hard not to take a lunch break today and find a couple. By the way, THIS IS MY FIRST COMMENT. Sorry for lurking so long. I’m ashamed.

    Love the show!

  • Man, never had one, but it’s a varietal I really want to try.

That reminds me…I’m putting together a budget while searching for jobs now that the web dev masters is done…perhaps I should add a ‘wine’ column. Especially since I’m within driving distance of the lib, haha.

You mentioned “washington state” in your broadcast. A few wineries produce very limited quantities of petit verdot. The only one that I can remember tasting was from Barnard Griffin. A couple years ago, they did a very limited release for wine club members only. Although I really can’t compare to anything, I remember it to be very good, big, and a great food wine.

QOTD: Tried one from South Australia, DogRidge Winery. Think it was their reserve. Very good. http://www.dogridge.com.au/

Have not had any in awhile but will keep an eye open and try again soon.

Nope, I’ve never had a petit verdot. I see several of the Murphy Goode wines on the shelves here in SF, but don’t think I have ever seen the Petit Verdot. I’ll keep my eye out for these.

Your Time magazine smile was kinda creepy there Gary. Don’t worry… they’re good at photoshop!

QOTD: I k now I have had Petite Verdot, and what I have had was alright. Unfortunately, I dont remember names or vintages, sorry. You’re right though that they tend to be expensive, which is why i dont have them often… usually only in tastings. I dont think i’ve ever bought any

  • I have not tried Petit Verdot, but I am the mood to try it. I think I’m waiting for the right meal, but this is just an excuse. I would greatly enjoy trying some Petit Verdot and some Portuguese wines in a blind taste test.

Have not had any 100% PV – only as a blending grape. Why? Well I simply don’t know why I have not, but I will correct this oversite on my part ASAP

  • Hey GV … thanks for the show on PV. I am intrigued with this grape. I have only had a barrel sample from a winemaker friend who works at the Virginia Winery Château Morrisette (http://www.chateaumorrisette.com/) … they make a lot of crap IMHO, bu they do sell mostly their sweet and cheap stuff (their Red Mountain Laurel — YUK — is their best seller), so I guess they need to make it in order to stay in business. The winemakers really do want to make better stuff, though, and the PV I tasted from their sample (normally used to blend, of course) was very, very good. I mean, I actually LIKED a wine they made! It’s funny, but their sales were slipping badly several years ago when the y suddenly decided to put a dog on the label, and now their wines sell like hotcakes in Virginia. Go figure!

I’m certainly going to look for a PV now!

Thanks, as usual, for all you do!

GUESS WHAT: Darcey and I may be in NYC at the time of your WineLibrary celebration in March!!! I hope we can figure out some train or some way to get there! We’d love to meet you and see the store!

    Be Well!
