Qotd: had a few in Virginia this past year at a tasting that were dynamite. Unfortunately they were all done blind so I'm not sure which one was the best

  • Malbec is leading the way and Petit Verdot is hot on it’s heels – of those once commonly blended – that are now searching out the spotlight. Like Tom Brady – not even a first round draft pick – but what can you say? When you’re good, you’re good, and eventually people notice.

QOTD: I have had one PV – a small producer in Richland, WA – Tagaris. It was bright and bit chewy though not crazy tannic. Which is prob why it sold out. Curious to try more, cuz I am a big Cab fan.

BUT – you do not ship to WA, and there are no great wine stores in eastern WA. What is a girl to do?

I never had a 100% PV, although I would be very willing to try. There are not a whole lot of good wine stores around here that would carry it. However, I vow to pick up the next bottle of PV I see.

    New Apple TV? Nice!

Only had the PV in combination with other wines. Not waiting for anything, just a wine n00b.

    QOTD:
I’ve never had a chance to try PV, probably because I was recently introduced to wine and it isn’t readily available. I definitely want to try it though.

    3. Having trouble finding some around my corner of Richmond – even that VA label you pulled out!

  • I have not tried Petit Verdot but would like to try it soon. It not be easy to find around here. I wish we had a Wine Library close by, but being in Oregon and on the West coast that is a long shot. I am wondering if it would grow well here in S.Oregon with hot summer days and cool nights. May need to look into that. Another great show Gary.

  • Mr.Ambassador

Time to head out and find a petit verdot to sample. To date I’ve only enjoyed this varietal when it was part of a blend.

I have heard some optimistic predictions concerning both P.V. and Malbec as climates get warmer and greater sugar and brix plays a factor; likewise grapes which ripen early may become problematic.

Have to head out and find my Washington State Petit Verdot now!

    Cheers

  • Yes… funny you should do a show on a wine I just tried for the first time last night.

Bell Petit Verdot 2004 Massa Ranch.

I love thier Syrah Massah Ranch so I tried this one and it was actually very good.

    So…. you get the picture?

  • I don’t buy them at home as they aren’t too available here but I always get them when I see them on a wine list. So are you giving away an Apple TV?

  • Fiorentina!

    1. Yes
    2. I’ve had the Murphy-Goode and Bourassa Vineyards
Personally, I can see why you like Petit Verdot so much, but, honestly, I don’t see it becoming the next “sideways.” Over the course of the next decade, I see Sangiovese with a greater percentage of domestic growth when compared to PV.

qotd: don’t think i’ve had one. hard to find anything in oklahoma other than boone’s farm and yellowtail…

Gary…not your best show today. You were very rushed, almost distracted, and one wine was decent…what gives bro? Gotta bring it EVERY TIME. Like Joe D said when asked why he played so hard every game, “There might be a little kid watching me for the first time, and he is going to leave with an impression of me.”

Have not seen it here, but will keep a look out. In fact, I try and source many of the wines that are covered, but I am becomming to realize that the selection here is very thin compared to the mainland (US).
