qotd: All I really know about is some of their wines, and the main reason for me goin there would be to see the wineries. The history would be nice too
Wow just had a bottle of Chateau D'Auvernier Neuchatel yesterday. LOVE that you threw the spotlight on Switzerland wines, some killer quality there, wines that aren't explored nearly as much as they should be, but the prices are high.

One thing, Chasselas is not ONLY in Switzerland, it's made as a varietal in Alsace, the one made by Domaine Schoffitt is particularly good. Also you can find it under the Pouilly-Sur-Loire appellation in Eastern Loire Valley France too.

Terrific show today. I am looking forward to hunting down these wines and finding a case of the Pinot Gris. I love it when you have guests, Gary!

My wife thinks AJ is a “little puka shell” and that’s a good thing.

QOTD: I would go to Lucerne to drink an elegent smoothie made of Petit Verdot grapes, fresh tangerine and lime juice, with a little swiss goat milk frozen yogurt. The elegent Sophia could also slather Gary’s bottom with the left over Petit Verdot grapes and we’d all splash in the lake and recite poems and laugh? Plus the jazz moment, with excellent sexuality.

Wow……that was probably the worst episode I have seen of late…..that girl had no personality and she brought your energy level down my boy! 😉 She was very nice but just not a personality for TV……..what happened to gettin the Vayniacs on the show….that would rock…..forget these producers!
Having said that….I am keen to try Swiss wines so will be on the lookout
    QOTD – great cheese, neutrality,

That was a very good ep.
Mikie C got it just right, keenly observing Sophia’s wine savvy, expert spit and great laughter.

Yesterday’s brother ep was quite ok and even moving in parts, but this was good TV. I think it opened a door for many to Swiss wine.

QOTD: Swiss wine, and Switzerland for that matter, needs more of this, visible exposure of Swiss quality and charm.

  • Kristen

Ah how I’d love to try those wines! And it’s funny, I just had my first Swiss wine (2004 Fondant Valais Suisse), a Chasselas last night when my friends and I ate raclette!!! 🙂 Et Sophia, merci être venue à la Thunder Show! Vous nous avez donné beaucoup d’information sur une région que la plupart des Américains ne connaissent pas. Est-ce que votre château donne des visites guidées? Je voudrais bien la visiter!

QOTD: I’ve never been to Switzerland, but I do want to go. I’ve had several Swiss friends (francophones et germanophones)so I’ve learned a bit about the country.

    Great episode Gary!

QOTD: I don’t know too terribly much about Switzerland, but if I had the funds I would love to visit the area. Along with wine, I am very interested in other languages and cultures.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this already, but perdrix = partridge.

    Awesome show; I have to agree with everyone saying that Sophia was the perfect guest: Cheery, knowledgeable, and French-speaking :~}

QoTD: I travelled for a few days (in central America) with a Swiss, so I’m already convinced I should visit! He never mentioned anything about wine, though, so now I’ve one more reason.

    Great guest!

her heart)? I think she did it 5 times. No big deal, just curious.)

P.S. I don’t think you should score wines when you are tasting/taping next to the proprietor. The descriptions are enough.

QOTD: Iâ??d love to visit Switzerland and try the wines your family makes. I was there at the age of twelve and loved the jams. I’ll bet the wine is fantastic!!
Gary, the show was great and so was Sophia. How about signing off in Russian.

Sophia and Gary, great show today, I have never thought of looking at switzerland for wine, just chocolate. I will have to seek one or two out.
QOTD- I know very little about Switzerland other than the chocolate kicks butt over anything we have in the states, the watches are the best in the world, and the pocket knives are very handy. From the little I know about the country it sounds like a great place and I would very much like to see it someday. Thanks for a great show today!

Any insight into Sophia’s tasting method? Seemed to purse her lips and allow some air into her mouth while tasting … Tried it with my Malbec and got way more aromatics (esp. alcohol) than with a closed-mouth whirl. What say you, GV?

Sorry to be such a scalawag, Gary, but there’s another comely wench gracing your decks, matey! Aaarrrrrgggghhhh! Aaarrrggghhhh! (Two Arghs=good mojo)

  • Great and informative episode!!!!!!
QOTD: I don’t know much about Switzerland except that I always enjoy anything I eat that has been imported from there, and now I am definitely interested in trying some wines from the region as well!

  • Nice dude. hilarious I was watching thinking geez man give her the bucket first and you pass it over and give us all a wink.

QOTD: Have a good friend there, I know it has a high standard of living, beautiful countryside. I’d drink the wine if it showed up in my local shop (here in canada, eh?!), and would be happy to visit if the CDN dollar was stronger!

Must be some strange air around Kitchener that DC would be pretty much alone in not appreciating your lovely guest, Sophia (Sofia?). OTOH, she’d probably think my disdain of dark chocolate was pretty weird, too. Also, pretty radool to be able to out-spit Gary. I prefer the aerated whirl, too â?? the closed mouth approach I find tends to accentuate the heat/alcohol to the detriment of the balance of the wine. IIRC, JPiper would agree.

Chasselas is produced by at least a couple of wineries in the Okanagan, I believe, as is zweigelt. Probably inspired by Swiss ex-pats near or at the top of the vinification chain.

QOTD When we lived a couple of years in Europe, we found Switzerland to be our favourite destination. Always said if we were ever kicked out of Canada, we’d head for Zurich. Superior service was the byword, sensible and comfortable amenities abound. Endless hot water in those great big bathtubs made for soaking and/or visiting… Rare in Europe back in the day.

Didn’t drink a lot of wine there, as we were budget travelers, barely past CKC-dom. And the dry hotels were bargains, including the usual Swiss service.

Love to go to ski, meet some mountain goats and drink wine from the unknown bad boys of Europe. Loved seeing a wine maker/family guest on the show and love that Gary is willing to criticise the wines regardless.
