2005 Veramonte Chardonnay Reserve (Chile). It brought a little thunder to the table – 88 points worth.
Looking forward to hearing about what’s up in the south of France. I love the wines from southern Rhone, Cahors, Madiran…

  • Columbia Crest Vineyard 10 Red Wine, 2005

Columbia Crest is one of the largest wineries in Washington and one of the best. What makes them so good is that they produce a very large amount of wine at various price points delivering excellent quality across the board. Whether you are buying their “Two Vines” selections for $6-8 or the Grand Estate for $9-12 or a Reserve wine for $22-35 you will always get a well made wine with good varietal character and finesse. My biggest complaint is that some of their wines can taste “over oaked” and therefore not my favorite to match with food. Tonight we tried the new Two Vines Vinyard 10 Red Wine. This is a blend of predominantly Syrah, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a deep ruby red with purple tones. On the nose there is the smell of sweet strawberries, black cherries and some toasted coconut. This is a fruit forward New World wine with a medium body and a smooth mouthfeel. The flavors are mainly ripe plum, blackberry and a hint of spice and toasty oak. The tannins appear low and well submurged. This is a smooth sipper that should appeal to any New World junky who is looking for an inexpensive everyday wine. This wine is available in the Seattle area for about $7. Good.

QOTD: The last wine I had was one you gave 91+ points. The 2005 Carm Douro and it Rocked! I have been reccomending it across the board as a go-to wine to pair with steak and something that can blow you away for under $20. Good call.

QOTD: 2001 Ridge Home Ranch (Meritage) brought major thunder (you can forget about all those Z’s!). But then, I bought it because I knew it would. This wine is soooo smooth right now.

Thanks for the show, Interesting wines that you tasted today.

Hey Gary, so good to have you back. I hate to admit what the last wine I had was. I was making some risotto and needed some white wine. I didn’t think I had any and then remembered the gag gift that I was given at our Company Christmas party – we played the game where you pick the gifts and open them in front of everyone – anyhoo – I picked a book published in the 80’s – on SEX – and with it came the cheap wine to get us in the mood – OK so the wine was Fish Eye Chardonnay. The risotto was pretty good. Enough said. Thanks Gary for getting me to trust my PAL – I am a new Vanyack – however you spell it – love the show and wish I live closer to Wine Library TV – I am in IOWA! Lot of wineries popping up in Iowa if you didn’t know it. Iowa used to have a lot of wineries.

’05 Bogle Petite Syrah with “grandma’s recipe” meatloaf that my wife prepared fabulously as a favorite comfort food. Definitely brought the thunder, stood up well to the sweet ketchup topping and excellent QPR.

  • QOTD: A “Vinifity” red blend from Forgeron Cellars in Walla Walla. And yes indeed it brought the thunder.

That was a while ago. I gave up all alcohol for Lent.

QOTD: Last wine I had was a 2005 Drouhin Montagny while out for lunch Wednesday. It was a nice example of an inexpensive wine from a great vintage being quite nice to drink. It went very nicely with the crispy trout I was eating.

BTW, my first post though I’ve been lurking for several months and generally watch on my ipod while commuting to work on the train.

    Welcome back Gary!
