QOTD: To tell the truth, I’ve been avoiding Italian whites because I’ve heard that they’re sort of bland and that the reds of Italy are of much better quality. I’ll taste an Italian white real soon.

I sense a Jekyll/Hyde thing going on. The buttoned-up look is the evil Mr. Hyde and the relaxed look is the benevolent Dr. Jekyll. But they both hate Vinnie Testaverde and that other guy. Which one sucks fish eyes?

  • PS- What’s up with the “Free Mott” sign behind you GV? Have you chained him to a piece of furniture in your office and that was his sign to the Vayner Nation to try and emancipate him? 🙂

And NB_SPAZZ, that Rosa Regale is a crowd pleaser, but I thought there was too much sugar.

I’ve never had Greco di Tufo, but it will be on my mind the next time I visit the wine shop.

    Nuragus di Caligiari!

But I don’t have any in the house … there may be a Fiano around I can throw in as an aperitif though. But we’ve got a leg of lamb, so there are more important fish to fry: Rioja, Madiran, Gigondas, Barbaresco, or Bordeaux? Or anything else that might be especially interesting.

QOTD #1 – I’ve had 4 bottles of a Campanian Greco (Greco Taburno, which is the same grape and similar terroir to Greco di Tufo wines unless I’m mistaken), from July through October of last year. You can check it out on my cellartracker consumed bottles notes. Great stuff, I tried it about 8 months into my winetasting experience. After about 300-350 wines tasted since then, I still recall the balance of crispness roundness; great unique color (reminiscient of some Austrian Gruner Veltliner I’ve had, but more golden); and taste of the grape. Great stuff!

QOTD #2 – Already had Verdicchio… maybe a Bianco Capena I’ve seen around?

QOTD: I have not had Greco di Tufo!

So here is another reason I love the show…besides the fact that youre waaaay entertaining, you really do educate me on wine varietals..and truly inspire me to try new wines…

    Great show!
    Thanks Gary!!

The Conch in Conch shell is pronounced like “Conk”.
QOTD 1: Have had 1 or 2 Greco di Tufos in the past dozen years or so. Didn’t have a palate trained enough to remember anything special about them. Not since the Thunder Show has educated me.

QOTD 2: Am interested in trying a Verdicchio.

I love Greco Di Tufo. I spent some time traveling/exploring in rural Southern Italy and I always get a great sense of terroir from Greco.

QOTD: I’ve actually had a lot of Italian whites, but I’ve had arneis and erbaluce on my list of things to try for a while now. Maybe I will go with one of those.

  • GV,
Nother great educational ep. Yep, had the GDT and it’s good. Might have to get some of the 3d one.
QOTD: tough one since I love exploring and have sought out a lot of Italian Whites (and reds) and there are soooo many. So I’ll just pick one that I might have a chance of finding in the US from a more popular region — Vermentino.
BTW – what’s that glass you’re drinking from? It looks like a Schott Zweisel (which are great glasses and wouldn’t break and stain the carpet when Mott drops them), but I wasn’t sure.

    Hi Gary,

Surprised a bit you didn’t mention the major color difference between the first and especially the last wines, much more of a golden hue and certainly what looked like much more intense. The “light one” was almost like light-looking sauv. blanc.

QOTD: an awesome white from Friuli from a guy called Josko Gravner (really famous if you follow italian wine) (Ribolla is the grape)

QOTD#1: While I have not tried one, I worked in a restaurant owned by a guy from naples from age 14-19. He was very passionate about his wines from Campagna and just hearing the words Greco Di Tufo brings back wonderful memories.
QOTD#2: Well, altough Greco di Tufo is going on the “to try” list, I really want to seek out a nice Recioto di Soave for this coming weekend.
    thanks for the show!

    Hey Gary,

Great episode! I really liked the educational slant here. Tasting new wines is always fun, but I enjoy the episodes more where you share little fun facts and try to teach us something new. Keep up the good work. (But, seriously dude, tone it down on the football rants.)

QOTD #1: never had this varietal before, but (QOTD #2) the last one (the Vesevo) sounded nice. I prefer fruity wines, so the rubber/smoke thing is definitely not grabbing me.

One more quick question: today, as before, my comment appears with “Your comment is awaiting moderation” tacked on to it. Last time, the comment eventually disappeared. Do you moderate all of the comments, or is there something I’m missing?

    Thanks!

TOTW: Prolly can’t find a GdT ’round here; maybe a Tocai Friulano for the weekend. Either way, I had a nice Italian blonde in mind…

And finally, yeah, the VT/16 thing is DEFINITELY getting very old! And cold!

    Let’s move on!!
