I don’t drink enough of the bubbley stuff to comment on your question BUT my favorite cold winter or holiday wine style to have has to be moscato or port. I think both styles are great for kicking back with loved ones and unwinding. When it comes to post dinner drinking with GREAT company during the holidays I’m sipping some port for sure. Every new year’s eve over the past 6 or so years I’ve been drinking port but this year I might switch it up and have some demi sec or moscato.

QOTD: probably a few years ago when my dad set up a blind tasting of a late 70s Napa cab against a late 70s bordeaux with a group of european friends and they all preferred the Napa cab…great night and both great wines although I don’t remember the specific producers (the bordeaux may have been 78 lafite rothschild)

Thanks Matt – sparkling wines are fun. As regards Gary’s comment, I’m surprised that anyone had a bad experience at Gruet. It wasn’t some of your college crew kids tromping in barefoot was it? Gruet is kind of a classy place. Tell them to speak to Scott if they’re having any problems – it’s his job to make everyone happy.

QOTD: an interesting question that brought back a moment from the past. Several years ago some girlfriends and I spent a couple of days at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and Spa – it was in the winter and during the day we hopped from spring to spring – mostly outdoors – alternating between being wet and cold and wet and warm, I remember being wrapped in warm towels and falling asleep on a table in a little room. Then, we went back to our room, and one of my friends poured a bottle of Jordan cab – I can’t remember the year, but she had had it for some time, and it was as though I had shuffeled a deck of cards made out of berries and flowers – the aromas kept alternating and shifting – it was mesmerizing.

Congratulations on being on WLTV! One of the best Vayniac appearances I’ve seen!

Oh, and that Med school thing too.

QOTD: On a trip to Wisconcin, in an unseasonably warm January, having a bottle I don’t even remember, with some cheese, sitting outside (no joke, it was like 70 degrees, in WISCONSIN, in JANUARY), watching bald eagles fly overhead and in the trees over the vineyards.

    Congratulations, Matt! Fun show.

QOTD: Carl and I went to a Pinot Noir wine tasting in a park with a really fun group of people, wines from around the world. They were all ok wines but the group was very friendly and fun – someone brought chocolate to share. Then this guy breaks out a $300 burgundy…it was awesome. Such a fun experience and good company.

  • Kev and Ams

QOTD: Telling someone that Opus was overpriced. =)

  • Congrats, Matt on the med school.

QOTD: I made a great birthday dinner for my girl last fall and served it with an Albarino and she loved it and I knew that I was developing my tastes way beyond anything it had ever been before.

    Nice show…

QOTD – I can’t pick just one, but I will highlight driving down the Cayuga wine trail in the Finger Lakes with my parents when I was in college… that was fun.

QOTD: August 2007 Friday night- staying in a loft studio on Vanderbilt Lane in Hyde Park with french doors overlooking a stunning courtyard in the country, crickets chirping, warm air and with ceiling fans moving slowly, the smell of wildflowers in the air, Sting playing in the background, sipping on Mollydooker Two Left Feet and writing well into the night.

Great show today!!! Some guys have all the luck.
QOTD- The first time I actually tasted at a winery my wife and I rode the motorcycle three hours down to Canon City. On the ride home we rode through a downpour that turned to hail. But in retrospect it was one of the memorable wine tastings I have had to this day.

My favorite wine moment was the first bottle of serious, not Mateuse, wine I bought at 22 years old. It was a St. Emilion and as I left the store it was raining and the bottle slipped out of my hand and broke at the store entrance. I was deflated completely and the owner came out with another of the same bottle and handed it to me. One of my best all time moments and he made a friend for life. I went to his funeral last year and I never will forget him. And the wine a Figeac ’66 was amazing. I still purchase them. Great guest and congratulations on your accomplishment.

QOTD: The same moment that, fortunately, has happened many, many times. It’s the look of surprise and amazement that passes over a person’s face immediately after they’ve taken their first sip of a new, exoiting wine that I have introduced them to.

    Staying up for Conan!

Matt, congrats … both on med. school and on the trip to Wine Lib. / drinking bubbly with GV.

QoTD: The moment I discovered my love for Sangiovese in northern Italy while sitting outside one evening having a chat with some colleagues from around the world. I felt so fortunate to be enjoying such great wine with such brilliant minds.

Alright. While watching this video and you mentioning Conan I realized something. You NEED to be on SNL! I can imagine an SNL skit while you’re trying to educate some people on tasting wines but they keep coming up with wrong answers or just act like morons. Get your people in touch with Lorne’s people. This needs to happen.

  • Staying up on the Left Coast for CONAN tonite!

QOTD: Tasting at Sierra Grove with Dr Joe on a quiet Thursday afternoon in Napa. Pourer was a very personable young man into the wine he was serving us, had my best cab to date, and some really fun fun conversation on wine and other topics, a wine and a moment I will NEVER forget.

    Great show, love the bubbly!

  • Nice show today. And congrats to Matt for graduating med school! You definitely deserve the bubbly!

QOTD: (great question by the way) Other than my W.A.S.T.E.D. meetings here in Madison, my favorite wine experience had to be in France in the tiny village of Monflaquin. I was on a horseback riding trip through the southwest of France during high school and we stopped for lunch (bien sûr). We started drinking a red wine with lunch and it was the first time I had ever drank a red wine that I liked. But I had to stop so I wouldn’t “drive” drunk….I had 20 more kilometers to go that day!

  • GV, staying up/not writing a paper to watch Conan tonight! Can’t wait!

Great show. Congrats Matt! Gary, I really laughed at your comment about the snootiness of the people at Gruet.. they’re awful! I live in New Mexico so Gruet is very popular around these parts, but I will no longer take my guests to see the winery when they visit. Tell you what, Gary… when you come to Albuquerque on your book tour (wink, wink)… we’ll be happy to take you there and see what you think. Maybe you can talk some sense into those snobby SOB’s!

QOTD — I’ve had many great wine moments, but they are usually not about the wine but about the place and the people. My favorite bubbly memory, though is from Buenos Aires and a fabulous wine shop called Terroir. The owner graciously invited my husband and I to a party there. Nobody spoke much English and we had a blast! It was all champagne and the grand finale was Dom P. I don’t remember the champagnes at all, but the night was unforgettable.

my moment was: doing a switcheroo @ the U-Scan at the grocery store with any 2 dollar bottle of wine and a bottle of 70 bone stag’s leap artemis (scan the 2 dollar bottle twice, and slip the extravagant one in the bag). decanted for an hour and knocked back at a buddy of mine’s apartment. good times. (Don’t try this at home &/or ruin the trick for the rest of us!!)
