  • Hey GV,

QOTD – I’ve had one Pinot G, in my time as a legal wine drinker and that was at the first tasting I ever went to that a friend was kind enough to put on. No clue what it was, but it was definitely from Cali.

  • Hey Gary ~ Nice face-off! I think the Binner would be my favorite of the two… Pinot Grigio isn’t my favorite white (so many of them can be thin and lacking in the fruit department); but as it’s the season, I’ve tasted several lately. I’m going to go with the 2006 J Pinot Gris for now.

  • I have never had a Pinot Gris. Going to a wine party on Wednesday, so I’ll look for one for sure.

05 and 06 elk cove, oregon PG is outstanding. also try columbia winery, washington 07 PG. latter is reasonably priced crisp and well balanced. elk cove is $25 a bottle. it is crisp, clean and wonderful with halibut, shrimp, scallops or just sitting on a deck enjoying the spring and summer.

QOTD: I wouldn’t say it is my favorite, but one I really enjoy is the Rene Mure Alsatian Pinot Gris. It’s an organic wine, very good!

QOTD. Three candidates for the best Pinot Gris I’ve ever had, two Italians and one Alsatian. First, 2006 Castelcosa “Ramato.” “Ramato” is Italian for “copper colored,” which results from extra long skin contact. I met the winemaker, Marco Furlan, and he said that this is closer to the traditional way of making Pinot Grigio. He didn’t have a high opinion of Pinot Grigio as it is made for the American market. “Ramato” won’t be for everybody. It reminded me a bit of some the wine being made by Radikon. My second candidate is 2005 Vie di Romans “Dessimis” — nose of honeysuckle and rainy street, palate rich and high acid, just beautiful. My third candidate is 2005 Lucien Albrecht “Cuvee Romanus” — nose of ginger, green tea, & ginseng. All three are amazing wines in different ways.

  • Very, very good show!! I love these taste-off’s. I suggest a head to head battle between the 1999 Chateau Musar from Lebanon and any red Bordeaux.

Not a whole lot of experience with PG’s. Last one I had was the Hugel (Alsace), which I picked up at Waitrose (the grocery store) in London about a year ago, on my way to a Thai dinner at my cousin’s. Waitrose is probably the highest quality grocery chain in the UK (way better than anything here in the US). Most stores have a very decent selection of old and new world wines (at all price points).

The best pinot gris I’ve had is from Bergstrom in Oregon. I’ve had a number of pinot grigios, most often Santa Margherita, but none have been quite as good as the Bergstrom. Though, in my effort of become more of an Italian wine snob, I’m anxious to try as many as I can! I’m on the lookout for the Lis Neris! Mille grazie, Gary!

  • QOTD: Our wine club, The Well Sqouzen Grape, is having a Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio tasting the first Thursday in July, I’ll have to grab these two to include in the line up.

QOTD – Pinot Gris – Domaine Weinbach Cuvee Theo (I think)
    Pinot Grigio – Alois Lageder

  • Hi Gary,
Very nice show. Those 2 wines really demonstrated the classic difference between the Italian Pinot Grigio’s and Pinot Gri’s from Alsace. The one exception is that in my limited experience I’ve found the Pinot Gri’s to have a little more body than the Pinot Grigio’s.
QOTD: Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the Pino Gri I had from Alsace since it was in a wine class, but it was very full bodied, almost like a chardonnnay.

  • Hey Gary, great face off.

I’ve never had a Pinot Grigio before… the only white wine I’ve ever had was the white wine you brought to the Conan viewing party at Bounce, so unless you brought a Pino Grigio/Gris to the Conan viewing, then I’ve really never tried it before.

    Great show!

Ahhh..you can’t call it a draw! Ties are worse that losing..just think how the wines feel.

I’m curious to why you tasted the Pinot Gris first, because it has higher rs. Maybe that put the pinot grigio at a disadvantage?

QOTD: I remember really loving a ’92 Trimbach SGN I had–although I’m not sure if that counts. The first time I had an Alsatian pinot gris was like a revelation for me. Before I tried one, I had bashed pinot grigio because the majority of them I tried stunk, but now I’m hooked on trying new ones.

QOTD: Gotta go with my home province of BC, Canada. The Pinot Gris here is among the best in North America (at least from what I’ve tasted). Of the ones I’ve had, two stand out: Wild Goose Vineyards and Burrowing Owl.
