Finally–Ohio has taken a seat at G.V.’s table! I was born and raised in Ohio and yet am not a huge fan of Ohio wines. Maybe I drank too much Catawba rose on Memorial Day once upon a time and that killed it for me. QOTD: Favorite thing about Ohio–all of my fam is here in the state. Other favorite Ohio place, though–Yellow Springs. Check it out!

Interesting to hear what Ohio’s doing wine-wise.
QOTD: I understand that the German POW camps in Ohio in WW II were very well run and kind to the captured Germans who were not at all crazy about Hitler. The only other thing I know about Ohio is the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song.

  • QOTD: After a wikipedia search, I’d say Ohio Buckeyes. Those things are crazy-looking:

I have become familiar with Kinkead Ridge wines since their first vintage in 2002? There wines typically benefit from a little bottle aging. Unfortunately small wineries often can not afford to hold onto their wines long enough. I recently tried four vintages of the Viogner Rousanne and they had truly mellowed with age. All were good, but the ones with two to three years age were the best.

  • QOTD: I like that OSU was the first team that I remember putting those extra stickers on their helmets for good plays. There are a million teams that trye to follow them, but they’re never as cool as the first.

  • Just these past couple of weeks I’ve started watching WLTV and I am loving it! I haven’t really had that many wines but every time I watch your show it makes me want to start drinking them.

QOTD: My fav thing about Ohio is that Gary will be doing a book signing in it on Thursday and I will be there. Also, my family/friends, and all the great sports teams (yea right).

What are the chances that GV has Laurello, John Christ, Wolf Creek, maybe even Ferrante on for the “red” show??

What do I love about Ohio? Toughy… especially as an Ohio-lifer. The changing of the seasons might be a stretch because I’m not the biggest fan of the winter. I’m thinking the chance to escape life and hit the Metroparks, the State Parks, or any of the natural wonders that are out there.

I understand that you are trying to bring awareness to these nontraditional wine producing areas, but the very average quality of these wines just showcases how far they have still to come. Maybe someday Ohio will produce great wines, but today is not that day. Best thing from Ohio: Jack Nicklaus, Worst: Ohio state football – I may gouge out my eyes if they play in another national championship.

  • Just to clarify… we had only 48 cases of white Revelation because the frost last Easter took out 90% of our white grapes. I can only think that the Viognier/Roussanne blend should probably not have been shipped in the summer heat and bounced around by UPS… in 90 degree heat, four hours on a truck in Kentucky; 12 hours on a truck from Kentucky to New Jersey. Leaves Keasbey NJ at 4:14 AM, delivered at noon, 8 hours later. Here’s what the wine writer from the Columbus Dispatch said about the same wine, that I hand-delivered…

“A bargain southern Rhone-style white blend made from two-thirds viognier and one-third roussanne, the newest release from the Ohio River Valley shames countless more-expensive wines that seek what this one achieves: floral, honeysuckle scents married to a complex minerality with excellent acid balance and restrained alcohol. It will keep improving, so buy enough to sit on a few bottles.”

Gary, how about stopping a bit north at the Connecticut wine trail? 😉 Some nice whites and a few producers make some good desert style wines.

QOTD: The Pencil Sharpener Museum? Thats all I got.
