My house Chardonnay is Hacienda. Never more than $7 at the supermarket. It always tastes solid to me.

  • Obviously Mott was not behind the camera. Fire that guy or coach him better.

Hate I missed you in Otown, I am just up the road.

how about theMacon Lugny Charmes? Veramonte or Cono Sur. ..

You know you can do a better wine for 10 bucks, when you leave out all the oak chips and stuff, because you can concentrate a little more on good grapes..
I think the first 2 wines probably taste more of their winemaking than the fruit that they were made with. Really only wines with grapes from good fruit stand up to oak, cheap additives. Its way too easy to produce a cheap wine that tastes of nothing of a little sweetness, oak and malo.

Yea if by bad streak you mean trying a bunch of cheap, mass produced wines, then yea, its been a bad streak. Wine is not cheap to make. The value you talk so lovingly about is a false bargain. In Australia and California, almost all vineyards are totally supported by irrigation and chemical regimens, and imported to you at great expense, which for various reasons we all no are unsustainable. The cheapness of wines from 3rd world countries, in addition to the unsustainability of their agricultural techniques, is created by economies of scale, aka they take advantage of the unequal distribution of wealth and land, covering vast swaths of their countries’ best farmland with inedible crops destined for foreigners. Wine is no different than other cash crops in this respect; tobacco, coffee, tea, sugar, fruit plantations like bananas and pineapples, rubber trees and timber, not to mention the drug crops like cannabis, coca, and opium, and should be subject to the same ethos of fair trade and local consumption.

I would second the Louis Latour Bourgogne Blanc, or the Macon (though that’s probably north of $10).

Again, that’s for taking a few for the team, Gary, since we all sometimes end up at the corner store or supermarket having to choose between these familiar names.

QOTD: Based on the WL site, Yellow Tail, Wishing Tree, Covey Run. I’m curious how a Yellow Tail would compare to J Lohr but I wouldn’t do the tasting myself. You can do it.

I’ve been enjoying Saint Veran Chardonnay lately. Mmm. Affordable too.

Nice try GV! At least it was real and represented what we’re faced with at the neighborhood grocery. Columbia Crest, St. Michelle, Coppola, may all be something to try.

I’m killing myself right now. I was in Epcot that day and couldn’t make it to the book signing. If I had known you were doing a tasting I would have abandoned my family to come sit in the audience.

  • QOTD: Hmmmm…how about Mondavi?

Great show…love Epcot almost as much as WLTV, going back next year, haven’t been since November and I’m missing it big time.

Holy Cow Chard from Washington State. A Little north of $10 but not much, also try their Kung Fu Girl Riesling the next time you try some of them.

Oops, I missed your Oct 1 show with Charles Smith. I didn’t realize you had already reviewed Kung FU Girl. You still gotta try his Holy Cow though.

By the way I just got done watching the Oct 1 show and what a blast, never pictured Charles Smith to look or act like that! Love your shows.

QOTD – I don’t know about California – maybe there are some good options from South America?

  • GREAT episode in terms of topic. While I live an hour from your wine store, i’m surrounded by “Supermarket” type liquor stores that have isles of Yellow Tail and everything else is dusty.

Please expand this topic to other types of wine. They don’t need to be ~$10, just more easily accessible.

Okay Gary…I dig almost all of your episodes, but I really have to bust on you for this one. I work for Disney here in sunny Orlando and the Food and Wine festival is a phenomenal event, year after year. With all the selection of great wines at the event, why on *earth* did you choose to do a show with grocery store wines. Couldn’t you have done that in a few months when it’s snowing and people might have to resort to whatever is on the shelf?

Oh yeah…and that snowing part…we don’t get that here…but enjoy it when it comes.

I’m so disappointed, I can’t even bring myself to answer the QOTD. 😉

The Disney Food & Wine festival is one of my favorite events, missing it for the first time in years. Sniff.

I like that you did value, easy to find wines…and yet, there are better wine choices and that topic can be done from anywhere. So doing it at EPCOT was sort of a waste of the unique locale, when rather something from the festival, or even just other WDW spots would have been better.

Hope you enjoyed the F&W festival.
