  • Gary, the show with Randall was just fine. Yeah, it’s not network television, but all of us wouldn’t get an hour on that subject in that quality on TV. Thank you.

I used to hold steadfastly to the rule that “I’m not drinking any f***ing merlot.” I think I’ll have to give those wines a try though if I can find them around Colorado (unless you do some free shipping…).

    Thanks for another great show.

I haven’t had a good merlot that I’ve liked in a while, but I may have to look for that Mercer. Sounds good!

My QOTD: Where’s the QOTD & what happened to episode 565? It skipped from 564-566.

I love when you bring the Merlot back! I’m a big Pinot Noir fan, but I also love Merlot. Why the hate, people?

Gary: Fay-vree was very well known for those rediculous passes to nobody, most of which ended up as picks when he played for the Pack. I think someone should be checking his O2 saturation during the game. Maybe the old man needs an oxygen tent on the sidelines! I warned you.
I would much rather drink a Merlot than a Cab.
    Smell it first!

  • Maggie J

I think I need to look past some of the mass-produced Cali Merlots I’ve had in the past.

Nice episode… glad to see some Merlot… keep those ‘Sideways’ haters away…

And no QOTD or wristband…? This last week, especially the weekend, must have thrown you…

And lastly… no episode this last Friday, s/b #565…? Did it not load, or there won’t be one…?

  • Hi?gary, I went to a medoc tasting last week and once again I realised vintage in that region is such a key factor…and terrior and varieties as well.

Nice, and have a good day!

Not too sure about 100% Merlots, but Merlot-based Bordeauxs can be great for their pricepoints up and down the scale!

Good show, I have not dissed the Merlot since Sideways since it was the first “memorable” wine I ever tried while in Venice, Italy many, many moons ago.

Time to go watch the last undefeated team get a pounding!

    Go Colts!

    Cheers

  • Great episode with an epic ending!!! Wow, I was actually thrown off by the pirate eye that I missed the question of the day. Again, great episode, and I will be at the WL with the wife this Saturday.

Great pirate ad-lib at the end.

The double-session with Randall was a good show; he’s a very philosophical wine-maker. But, he’s so laid-back that your high-energy manner was definitely challenged, Gary.

Was there no QOTD? Or, did I miss it? Oh my God.

Apparently poking oneself in the eye induces memory loss, and lack of QOTD’s.
Three cheers for big merlot! I like an occasional oaky merlot, I must admit. But hey I am still supporting the less cool varietal.

QOTD: If you could go back in time, i.e. Back to the Future, which era would it be and who would you see out to have that classic glass of wine? No family members allowed in this question. Must be historical figures.

  • Izek

Wanted to point out, with regards to the Mercer, that the Horse Heaven Hills is not a vineyard but an AVA (American Viticultural Area). It is located within the Columbia Valley AVA and borders the Yakima Valley AVA on the north and the Columbia River on the south.

  • Nice to see merlot to get some respect again. I’ve got to admit I’ve been slightly turned off, because it was such a commonly drank wine. However, I am a fan and would love to try the Mercer.

Much thanks for the Bday shoutout!

Be prepared for a massive post on my blog. I’ll link it up on Twitter when its ready.

Dominus: Great QOTD- it’d have to be Jesus at the wedding, because that wine would probably have been 110+ points 😉

Dude, I had my first Wow moment when giving a rather young pinot noir a sniffy-sniff. Obvious burnt popcorn, which I loved. Thanks for helping me open my nostrils…

Okay, okay all is forgiven. And BTW your high energy is NOT a problem. Loved the double hitter last week and am delighted that today you are giving Merlot its due.

  • all it took was someone with balls to bring back merlot, i think we just saw him. i am agreeing with Dr. T 100% is still a little rough, but Pomerol merlot based blends and even the right Bank Bordeaux stuff is beyond great, Chilean merlot is growing off the charts (really try some) but i feel like Cali is still 2 years behind on merlot…sorry who could forget Washington

QOTD: the 110 point wine answer with Jesus is prolly the best, but i think i would get to whirlin’ a glass with T. Jefferson, thats see if that 18th century stuff really was his?
