90/100

line of the day – ‘did these wines get scored a point higher because of a Jets victory. Yes’

Good positive show, with my highlight the scissor, paper, rock routine mid-tasting.

Love the sound of those wines. Going to love the sound of the champagne bottle popping when my candidate wins tomorrow (I’ll keep that to myself, because nobody really wants to start that discussion here)…

QOTD: Tonight…an over-oaked Chard. from LaFond (they make good pinots generally); yesterday: a way to tart, acidic Pinot Noir from Lane Tanner (she’s usually great with Pinots); Friday: a random red blend for Portugal…it was ok, but probably not worth the $16 bucks; on Thursday, a GREAT GREAT GREAT Aussie Shiraz, the 2001 Annie’s Lane Coppertrail…probably the first wine I’ve had where I could definitely taste “days and days” of different flavors coming across the palate. A beginning, middle, and wonderfully long finish.

  • Thanks for continuing to bring the education and passion! I sorta want to learn more about the outfits you wear in the wine-nerd cave.

My wife and I are totally pumped about the Thundercruise. It’s our 7th anniversary today, and the cruise will be our first real holiday together since we were married. April can’t come soon enough!

QOTD: I’ve been drinking more Riesling than anything lately, but I also had a pretty good Argentinian Malbec a couple weeks ago (Viña Cornejo Costas don Rodolfo), and hope to find another one or something similar this weekend.

Recently had a Markham Zinfandel from Napa. The wine was OK, the food was better and thankfully the company was excellent.

Was halfway thru my jug of Chablis when you killed my buzz, man, dang. Heard something about the EU cracking down on “stolen” Euro appellations, that true? Is my cellar of jug Chablis and Burgundy soon to become collectors items?

    From Decanter:

The longstanding belief that the film Sideways sent Pinot Noir sales through the roof was confirmed today.

The effects of the film on Pinot Noir ‘were positive across all price points, with the largest impact being on the highest price point of US$20-$40 per bottle,’ a research paper published by Sonoma State University and Sonoma Research Associates says.

It goes on to show the negative effects of Merlot being confined ‘mostly to the lower priced segment, under US$10 per bottle.’

In the 2004 film ? an unexpected hit ? the main character famously waxed lyrical about the virtues of Pinot Noir whilst ridiculing Merlot.

Earlier data from ACNielsen had shown a dramatic initial surge in Pinot Noir purchasing just days after the film’s release ? there was a 16% increase in sales compared with the same period a year earlier.

In 2005, glass manufacturer Riedel reported an increase in US sales of 45%, partly because of more demand for its $12-$95 Pinot Noir glasses.

The research, released almost four years after the film’s release, concludes that ‘the positive impact on Pinot Noir appears greater than the negative impact on Merlot.’

The ‘Sideways Effect’ was only temporary, with sales of domestically produced Merlots up, according to data from IRI, by 6% in December 2007.

The Tittarelli Torrontes and Alamos Melbec are currently our go to wines.
Lots of flavor, with a good price point.
Must admit I pass over the Chablis isle. Time for another look?

Great show Garry – still a relative newcomer to wine and didn’t realise Chablis was a region rather than varietal.
To note though, the $ has really strengthened in the last 1/2 months but I guess wine prices won’t start feeding through for a couple of months.

Your episode with Jancis was epic! That and the double with Randall got this lurker out of the shadows. Congrats on landing the big fish and keep more coming.

Chablis has to be one of the most under appreciated wines, period. Always a favorite food wine. Great show.

For the California Chardonnay show Wednesday, please consider Stony Hill. This is atypical Napa Chard from a pioneer winery of the area. A side by side with Rombauer would be an interesting comparison in styles.

QOTD: I’ve been drinking a lot of wines from our recent trip to Oregon. I continue to be stunned how good wines from the Willammette Valley are. $25 Pinot Noir blowin away stuff from Russian River. Coincidently, you’ve been talking up Arneis lately. We fell in love with one from Ponzi.

Again a very nice show. Like it a lot when you go into the wine and grape content. Currently drinking all sorts of stuf because of the wine course i am following. Very keen on the albarino and gruner veltliner.. Pretty unknown but this will change….

QOTD: I change it up all the time, constantly trying different things, when there’s something I really like, I purchase additional bottles. Recently had an Allan Scott(New Zealand) Sauvignon Blanc that was just as great as the Mahi Sav Blanc which is a personal favorite. Had a 2002 York Creek Cab Franc which I tried at last year’s Grand Tasting. Not sure if Ridge wines has anything to do with this wine, like a 2nd label. At 30 bones or so(had to hunt it down elsewhere cause WL didn’t carry it) a Chinon probably would have been a better value. Tasted like there was some Zin or Carignane blended in. Black Cherries and dark fruit for days–was much better on the 3rd day. Tasted pencil shavings(the oak baby) a litle inky and sun-dried tomato. I’d definitely buy it again, but only if it was at around the mid-twenties price point.

Coming from Germany we drink mainly European, of course with a fair share of German wines, and we have to accept the limits of our budget… Our wine merchant improves his connections to Spain, so the everyday wine tends to be Spanish at the moment. It would be nice to be able to try more American wines, but it is not that easy to find interesting bottles here.

Regards and have a fine election day!

Dinking a lot of Red Head Studios Yard Dog red. Picked it up because of high percentage of Petit Verdot. Never had any wine with PV before and as Gary is always loving PV I decided to give it a try. This wine is great and best of all cheap. I try to buy a balance of both cellar dwellers and things that are ready now. I also love Leeuwin Estates wines from Margaret River in Australia. Especially their Chardonnay and Art Series cabs. Great stuff. Can’t wait until the new vintage arrives from pre-sales!

Interesting show. I think it might be nice to include a map (possibly on the wall behind you, on the table, etc) every now & then to show where some of these regions are located. Especially when you’re into a nerdy mood on a given day and wanting to drop some extra knowledge. Just a thought. QOTD: I’m enjoying various wines from Spain at the moment, especially “value” grenache, tempranillo, etc as I recently returned from vacation there.

QOTD – I’ve been mixing it up a bit recently and trying to buy less and drink more of what I already have. Surprisingly, I have had a few Cabs that I enjoyed. Last night, I grilled up some dinner and enjoyed the Eppalock Ridge Shiraz that you had recommended awhile back. What I liked most about it was the fullness – not in body, but in flavor. Lots of full flavors, and enough tannin/acid to go with my cheeseburger. Thanks, GV.
