More value wines in ’09 is good. $15 is a splurge for me right now. Hope that changes for the better in ’09.

But I’m also up for the more expensive tasting. I might not get close to that type of wine, but I love to hear about them. Vicarious thrills are next best to the real thing.

    Wishes for a bright 2009!

Why a brown bottle? Are they saying that their Reisling is more similar to the (German!)-Rheingau rather than (German!)-Moselle.
After drink Riesling (from Germany) for 40 years, the bottle color ‘sort of’
indicates the taste of the area.

  • Nice to see you tasted the Les Obriers de La PΓ¨ira, though I must say I disagree with part of your assessment. I can’t stand things like Mollydooker, or much anything considered “new world,” but this wine is very interesting. Yeah, it’s got big fruit, but there’s more to it than that. Sure, maybe like a modern Chateauneuf (though I honestly like it better than say, Autard’s La Cote Ronde, which is too modern for me). But to me, no way like an Australian wine… If I had heard your review first it probably would have scared me from trying it. To me, the fruit is way more real than you give it credit for, and definitely tastes like where it’s from… a great value, for sure. My note:

11/17/2008 rated 91 points: In glass 30 minutes. Inky purple color. Massive nose shows pencil lead, guava, wet clay, paste, and mint leafs. This is a brooding nose, but fantastic as it’s earthy aromas as opposed to fruity ones. Very soft and creamy in the mouth showing some oak spice. Finish is also quite spicy, showing deep, opulent cherry and blackberry flavors, after an initial bitterness. This has silky tannins with no harsh edges on the finish. Definitely delicious and a great value.
