    QOTD: YES! I have had a couple of Negroamaro blends with Mascarello and Greco Nero from this area, as well as many Primitivo di Manduria on the “heel.” I’m ALL about the Aglianico from over the border in Campania, and lately I’ve dabbled with a few wines from Calabria a bit south.

    I hope Cynthia said yes!!!

    P.S.- Shout out to discovering, and being blown away by, REAL meatballs!

    Q – I have had a number of wines from this region, a number of Salices and others, i’ve also had today’s wine and I agree…a nice value. I feel the value wines coming out of here and Sicily in the $10 to $12 range are far superior to those from many other places.

    I’ve been to Italy but not the boot (heel included). But I am fairly certain I’ve had wines from the Puglia region. My very favorite Italian wines experience happened in the cellar of a winery in Tuscany—many course dinner prepared by Grandma Nonna (who looked just like any one of my dearly departed elderly ancestors), paired with wines of the region. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!!

    As for meatballs (AND red sauce)—my husband declares mine the very best. So I’ll take his word for it! I am Italian (both sides of my family), and hubby is half. Mangia…and a salute!!

    Puglia is a really interesting part of Italy to visit. I didn’t really have anything specifically memorable while we were there, but the local wines always went really well with the food. Def had primitivo, salice salentinoa and negroamaro.

    In a little coastal town just north of Bari had some decent homemade rosso and bianco. My Italian wasn’t very good so never did figure out what he made the wines from. At least I didn’t go blind 😉

    I like the1-wine show idea as a change of pace. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this

    Puglia is a really interesting part of Italy to visit. I didn’t really have anything specifically memorable while we were there, but the local wines always went really well with the food. Def had primitivo, salice salentinoa and negroamaro.

    In a little coastal town just north of Bari had some decent homemade rosso and bianco. My Italian wasn’t very good so never did figure out what he made the wines from. At least I didn’t go blind 😉

    I like the1-wine show idea as a change of pace. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this

    Yes! In fact, the Tormaresco Neprica is one of my favorite recent finds, though it is $12-$14 here in Hawaii. I have tried about six wines featuring Negroamaro and have loved each one, so anytime I see it, or a wine from Puglia I am sure to pick it up.

    GV, i had to re-comment on this episode…I had a bottle of Taurasi 2003 reserva Salice Salentino last night that for me had serious thunder!! My friend was making some awesome homemade pizzas and the pairing was incredible. The few years of age on it seemed to really have it in focus and it almost had a little nebbiolo “vibe” to it. I was so stoked on it that I had to leave a comment on this episode. Thanks!

    GV, i had to re-comment on this episode…I had a bottle of Taurasi 2003 reserva Salice Salentino last night that for me had serious thunder!! My friend was making some awesome homemade pizzas and the pairing was incredible. The few years of age on it seemed to really have it in focus and it almost had a little nebbiolo “vibe” to it.     Correction: Taurino was the producer of the last comment. I might add that tonight I went out and found an 2006 IGT wine that is 100% negroamaro..it is also very tasty.

    Gary – I really like the one wine format! It’s nice to go deeper into a wine and it’s region. I can’t say I’ve ever had a wine from Puglia, but my wife has had many. She should; her family is from there!

    Yes definitely…quite a few in fact…I really appreciate the dark fruit component that they tend to have…and in my opinion they are very drinkable wines. In fact, a Primitivo that I had a Cork wine bar in DC was probably one of my recent favorite wines. It’s made by Duca Carlo Guarini, from Le Vigne Vecchie (old vines) and it was a 2004 vintage from Salento of course. You should try it out!

    When looking for a decent red from the heel of Italy (Puglia) my tip is to try any wine from a cooperative called 'Cantine Due Palme'. Not expensive at all, great quality. 140 vineyards working together.

    I have tasted this wine. I just served the 06 at my Cigar Tasting Birth Day Party March 28, 2010. However I am in love with the 05 Tormaresca Negramoaro 70%/Cabernet 30%. I have been searching all over the country. So far no luck. If you liked the Negramoaro/Primative, wait till you get a load of the 05. Any help???????
