line of the day – ‘you, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the pear world’

Really enjoyed this episode – nice to hear the words of a truly masterful winemaker, and interesting to see him slip more and more French into the conversation. My highlight was when the guest used the term ‘make up’ to describe anything that affects the winemaking process, and Gary threw in a big sideways glance at the camera, as it’s a phrase he often uses himself.

Very good episode. To echo some other comments, the discussion about oak was really informative.

  • GV…another episode with liquor! Did you read my Facebook Fan Page comment? Or is it all just a coincidence? 😉 Keep it up.

Must have been a good day at Cru. I fond the info about the aging in oak fascinating. I think having guests is a nice feature and look forward to more.
QOTD: I think it comes down to good balance with the acidity. I find white burg. classic for food parings and is a staple for me.

Hey Gary, was that your cot I saw off in the corner of CRU?

I agree with Norm O’Genski: GIVE MOTT HIS OWN GLASS. Also, another great ‘show idea’ would be getting Mott drunk. Just imagine the hilarity! 🙂

QOTD: My classic thought of what a white Chardonnay…no, Burgundy should be? Hmmm…poured all over a Tahitian Beauty, then licked off.

    Maybe TMI…

Jean-Marc is one of the best interviews you have had. I love his wines, but they are difficult to find where I live. On a trip to Burgundy in 2006, we scheduled a visit to Domaine Roulot, and Jean-Marc conducted the tasting. What a great experience!

It’s too hard to pick a single white Burgundy as the best. My favorites, in addition to Roulot, are Sauzet, LeFlaive, Drouhin, Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet, Jadot, Colin-Deleger, Bonneau du Martray, Vincent Girardin, and Robert-Denogent.

  • Great point in regards to the nose corresponding to what you get on the palate. Really enjoyed the tech tips.

Sick episode. I’m loving the booze-i-sodes, too and this kinda makes me wish the Mezcal episode had a wine tasting in addition. I don’t want to inflate your already sizeable ego, GV, but you are obviously on a roll.

  • Gary, you need a value driven white Burgundy show. I’ve only had experience with Chablis and would like to escape from the buttery, oaked dominated Chardonnays of the world but not break the bank to do so. BTW, thank you for stop pointing at your eye every time during your intro when you say ‘I’m your host…’

Saw you at Zone Perfect but didn’t have a chance to say hi. Are you going to do a live show here in Austin?

  • QOTD: 1997 Chassagne – Montrachet La Boudriotte Blain-Gagnard. Balance, little tiny oak pet, Chablis influence but hold on too much minerality, surprise me with fruit and herbs.

As for Mezcal and Pear brandy – they fit in WLTV as well as occasional beer study. Welcomed. Must find a way to send you some particular Komovica http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakia produced by Serbian monks with more than 800 years of tradition in making. Not a business, they sell small amounts in person only… Maybe a good gift for upcoming Baby V’chuk 🙂

Great guest, one of the best!

QOTD: Sorry, I do not have the experience for a classic taste of the region.

Gary, Gary, Gary. How do you do it? Your show is always entertaining, usually educational, and I have nothing but admiration that you keep them coming with such frequency. Today, however, was the first time that I found myself actually salivating as you and Jean-Marc tasted. Damn the value shows! Once in a while we need to see the inspirational and evocative, not just the affordable.

  • Gary, Started watching the show in Dec 08, and have been hooked. I know NOTHING about wine, but I enjoy your comments and I hope to learn something.

It’s tough to keep the show going and not interupt sometimes. It’s fun either way.

Gary, where are the wristbands? I’ve gone through the whole schwag section and no dice, lots of cool pics of WLTV fans and their wristbands but no opportunity for purchase. What gives?
Much sadness from Maryland, even more so since I can’t get in on the secret packs because of the whole MD=no wine through the mail.
Just got into WLTV a few months ago and currently trying to run through the archives (currently episode 71 + most of the recent episodes) loving the show.
Why did the files get so huge? It takes a few hours to get them through itunes and my connection slows to a crawl.
Keep changing the wine world and I’ll keep watching 🙂

A great episode, great guest, good information. It is always inspiring to listen to the understated passion your guests have for the wine and the land.

QOTD – I absolutely prefer the unoaked Chardonnay’s. The cleaner, steely taste does it for me.

Great show – I’d been wanting to see Meursault on the show for a long time! I really feel like they are actually quite affordable compared to many Pulignys and Chassanges… and they definitely ‘bring the thunder’.

QOTD – I bought a bottle of 2002 Meursault (by Louis Nie) whilst I was in Burgundy, as it was my favourite of all the whites I tasted, and it is definitely my idea of what great chardonnay tastes like.

I have been a huge fan of the show, but for some reason this one didn’t do it for me. I think it is because I was not connecting with the guest. You have been very guest-heavy recently and I think you should go back to just you and the bottles, you’re more animated then, which for me makes it more entertaining.

Excellent interview with a facinating guest. Very informative and really made me thirsty for pear – not just for eating anymore!

Fun episode, the wine maker’s passion was really visible.
I’m a fan of Pears as well and must find the La Poire Du Roulot.

  • Great episode. I really liked hearing Jean-Marc talk about his wines. Seems like a very “real” individual. I have had some of his Meursaults and years ago they are what really convinced me that Chardonnay doesn’t have to be what it is in California.

Also, I love pear brandy. Doubt I’ll be able to locate this one, but I’ll keep an eye out…
