line of the day – ‘this smells like a helium balloon filled with oak chips’

After the previous episode where GV seemed a bit full of himself he’s back to his fantastic best in this one. The fruit machine analogy was pure gold.

  • Hey Gary

Thanks for a great show. Love the food pairing and love the bacon!

QOTD: Bacon’s strong smokey flavour means it’s great to use in a whole range of dishes – scattered in salads, adding weight to pasta sauce, stews and soups. For me however to really taste the bacon nothing beats a good old fashion bacon sandwich – a mountain of bacon piled between soft white bread, with a touch of homemade tomato sauce and maybe a little mustard. Oh and one of my favourite food parings is bacon with Brie.

    Cheers
    Andrew

All you young’uns enjoy your bacon because before long your doctor and wife will take it from you. Now it’s come to this: turkey bacon. BLT’s were the best!

    Great concept for the show.

QOTD: In pasta carbonara, or between two slices of bread with mayo.

Best way to eat bacon: very crispy [nearly burnt], on a BLT sandwich with toasted multi-grain bread and PEANUT BUTTER!! If you have never tried it, you owe it to yourself – if you like PB.

Question back to you, Gary: Would the Chateau Paradis pair will with the bacon-PB combo?

    QOTD – BLT

Q4U -Help me out here. I’m trying all these new wines and even going beyond my budget and have started cellaring some. I open up a great wine that I’m trying for the first time and fall in love with it. I go to WLTV to order some more and it is sold out. Do I need to get drunk every night to get a good supply of the wines that my palate loves? Help me Gary! What do I do?

  • GalvezGuy

QOTD – Love it just plain with breakfast or in a good BLT with ripe tomatoes and crisp leaf lettuce.

I get bacon flavors with a lot of Cote Roties and other things where Syrah and Vionier are mixed. Interesting how that comes out. It also reminded me of the 2005 Wolftrap (from the show) that had those great bacon flavors.

  • Another solid episode. Very well done GV. I loved it.

QOTD – Hook a brother up with some respect as I’m going to be the lone guy in the room to say this, but it has to be said. Bacon is overrated. Oh yeah, I went there. Overrated. Hear that bacon? I’m calling you out baby. Pork is a magical magical animal. Fact. And though I like bacon, maybe even love it in some instances, the amount of praise that bacon gets in comparison to other pork-derived products is ABSURD (example, Jamon Serrano from Spain kills it, pancettas, proper salamis, and the list goes on and on and on)
Not to mention that all bacon is NOT created equal. Most off-the-shelf bacon in the states is NOT that great. It really isn’t. Search your feelings, you know it’s true. Bacon is Overrated. That’s right. Bacon, I’m calling YOU out!

MY QOTD will have to wait until I am sitting co-pilot style in the cockpit of the Thunder Show.

  • Its not a mystery why Conundrum and Rombauer Chard sell so well- SUGAR! It was killing me the other episode when you said you couldn’t figure out why some many people love it. Its the sweetest Chard in Napa.

The Conundrum is sweeter and also not a Napa wine as many people think. Its made in Monterey and had been California appellation for a long time. (Cheap grapes + lots o’ sugar+ 90,000 case production= big profits)

QOTD-I only eat bacon cooked in stuff, don’t like it by itself.

QFGV-How important is the story of the wine/winery/people, or is it really all about what’s in the glass?

    Cool show Gary!

Personally, when pairing fatty foods and wine, I like a crisp white. Acid and fat seem to pair well in my mouth.

QOTD: I like bacon with a strong, creamy cheddar or with some eggs (obviously). My favorite kind of pizza has a bacon topping. Bacon also seems to match green veggies like bell peppers or asperagus.

Here’s my question to you: Jazz or classical music?

Bacon, bacon, baconnnn! Love it in a standard BLT. Gotta have juicy tomatoes, though. Bacon also goes nicely in many dishes and noted by numerous people here.

You did have a good QPR pinot in the Thanksgiving secret pack, Christophe Buisson Bourgogne Rouge 2006. We really enjoyed it, but it needed a few hours to open up.

QOTD- I Have to go along with the ubiquitious BLT. With garden fresh Tomatoes and Lettuce. On Potato bread toasted. Yum.
Question for you – For the QPR which brings more thnder Gigondas or Vacqueras? and Which particular Producer?

    aka Mike from Nebraska.

  • FriscoGrapes

Bacon and Wine Oh My! Two of my absolute favorite things. I often eat bacon while tasting wine, along with cheese and white bread with butter. I love big reds and I find the fat in the bacon, cheese and butter help balance them out.

On a side note, my wife and I are looking forward to the wine cruise in a couple of weeks. A week of fun in the sun sniffing, swirling and drinking our way to enlightenment. We will be celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and this will be my wife’s first cruise. We’re looking forward to a long needed break from everyday life and can’t wait to finally meet you in person.

P.S. It would be nice to see the Motster on board. We hope he can make it.

Don’t really dig the bacon that much. But slice it up and stir fry it with some garlic, ginger, soy sauce and vegetables and we’re talkin’.

Question for you Mr. Gary: How many Syrahs from the Santa Cruz Mountains have you had? The wife and I just went tasting there and had a pretty good time. We liked the syrahs from two wineries we went to much better than any other reds at similar price points from those places.

  • Bacon huh?
I haven’t had bacon in strips for the longest time, I do eat it however in the Italian food I get sometimes: with shrimp, Pasta Carbonara, etc.

Took a long time to get to a bacon episode.

    Cheers!

QOTD: I love bacon on a burger from 5 Guys but it has to be from 5 Guys. There is something about their fresh patties and all the other toppings blended together.

Question for Gary: Do ever make sangria for your friends and family? (I’ve got a one track mind for sangria recently, since we bottled our sangria on Friday)

I hate when I get poop-poop-poop on the slot machine!! Wine is okay but bacon rocks.

QOTD – My bacon has to be chewy, its the only way. I’m very happy to see yours was the same way. For the people that like it burnt, why not eat tree bark its cheaper and probably healthier.

Question for you – What wine region would you recommend for a great trip? Possibly a honeymoon play. We’re looking for overall trip not just great wine. Thanks

  • call me old fashioned, but nothing can fade the classic bacon and egg sandwich, with a little cream cheese on the bread (trust me, it’s the cat’s pajamas)

Question for Gary V: What will it take to be a guest on the Thunder Show? You name it and I’ll do it. the drive from Ohio to Jersey ain’t that far.

Funny story about Conundrum. My Dad (not a wine guy) had it a restaurant and loved it. So much so that he bought a case of it…from the restaurant for 40ish a pop. He whips out a bottle at Thanksgiving feeling all proud, and I tell him I see it by the truckload at Costco for 18 bones a bottle I swear I saw him vomit a little in his mouth.

QOTD: I could eat bacon in my milkshake and it’d be the best milkshake ever. I probably have it the most on my burgers. Favorite burger: Bleu cheese and bacon.

Q4U: Did you go to college? Just curious as you mention more of your high school days than post high school. If not, why? If so, why?
