line of the day -‘i feel like a cow took a dump on this vineyard and I’m happy about it.’

GV was in a really good mood during this episode and he was at his witty best…very enjoyable. Even Mott got in on the act with an impromptu zoom in on the ‘Crush It’ on the blackboard. The wines got good scores too – maybe connected to the mood, maybe not. Who knows?’

Hey Gary, loved the show today. Back to old format. And the pace is great.

Also, I’m emailing you a great song: Jonathan Richman’s “He Gave Us the Wine to Taste It”. Check it out!

I say no, keep the show and your retail effort very separate. Impartiality keeps you unique. I give you business even from from the west coast because of this.

  • awesome awesome show gary – the grab bag episodes are always a favorite, especially when the wines are obscure like the vermentino, each individual wine was a learning experience.
qotd – No, unless you do a blind tasting and then your favorite goes on sale. otherwise it will make me distrust your partisanship towards the wine in your rating

I like the themed shows but this was an fun random selection of wines. I will have to see if I can dig up the Dr. Frank.

QOTD: Who wants to turn down a discount or something free? At the same time I can see your concern about bringing the link between your commercial business and this enterprise. I think if it is done rarely enough then it would not be a problem.

    Hey Gary!

Big time lurker coming out. First comment for the thunder show!

Been watching since about 100 episodes ago, love the show but it’s a little hard for me to get into wine since I’m only 19. I live in PA so once I’m 21 I’ll take a ride over to jersey and check out the library!

Great episode, way to bring the thunder, love the variety! Good luck to you and your brother on starting your company! Much Love

Nothing like a fun show with random wines. I’m calling for another blind tasting, always fun. I think Ian has to step his game up and stump you one of these days. Don’t know if that is possible.

I also want to take the time to call out vay-ner-nation out there. There hasn’t been 200 comments in some time, common. I know people watch the show. Gary needs the feedback. I have an idea, have a taste off between Mott and Matt, who can guess closest to the score and price point. I’m sure you can find some that wine spectator has and brown bag them. Nothing like a good old competition. You be the ref.

Wow, GV on speed. I don’t think you should mix the video play with the commerce more than you already do. Free shipping is always nice but putting into WLTV would be a bit weird to me. By the way, I keep trying Pinotage but still don’t like it.

Gary – Loved the pace of this episodes and I especially liked your enthusiasm. I’m excited to try that Vermentino, I had a wonderful glass at Mia Dona (near Bloomies) not long ago and I look forward to tasting more Italian whites.

QOTD: I wouldn’t mind a free shipping code every few months. While I agree that it’s good to keep business and the show separate, people also need to think about the business you might have lost by coming down hard on a popular, rare, or high-margin wine without shame or fear of retaliation. Whatever you do, just be 100% honest in your evaluations, that means more to me than any amount of free shipping codes.

  • What’s with trying to keep the business and show seprate? They’re not seperate. Viewers do in fact buy from Wine Library, so how are they seperate?

  • Well, we’re getting closer to the couch anyway. Pinotage is climbing my likeablility list. Everytime I try it I like it a little bit more.

QOTD: Don’t cross that line Gary.

  • Yes it’s a little “pitchy” and we know you want to sell wine; but it would be appreciated by the loyal viewers of the show. I think if you offered something with full disclosure, it will come off as less pitchy.

Like the pace 4 wines in 13 minutes [after subtracting the pre tasting intro] may be a 2009 record 😉

    Hey man, small request…
Can you pronounce ‘chook’ properly, it’s rhymes with book or look or nook.
    Cheers

QOTD: Don’t care either way, as long as it’s quick and doesn’t take up a lot of wine tasting time.

I agree with you on the pinotage. Never tried one until I saw an early episode of WLTV. Now I love it.

QOTD: Maybe you just need a dedicated “commerce” show. After all, you present a great variety of good wines, only SOME of which turn up in my local shops. So why not give your customers the opportunity to obtain hard-to-find wine a an affordable price point. If the show is labeled as “commerce”, people can skip it entirely…

In addition, why not have a regular segment entitled “What’s in Your Cellar?” where people come in with whatever wine they have around the house..Now that’s true web 2.0..

Nice pace and energy this show…I really liked it, and mott kills it with the zooms.
QOTD: I agree with others that keeping WLTV free of promotions, etc…is probably a good idea. While it would not offend me at all, I can imagine it could turn off some people. The Wine Library Daily service is always there to hook us up with good deals. Thanks for the show!

Please… NO pitches on the show. Link them down below or write a comment yourself offering a deal. If you pan the wines on a show, you are not going to offer a deal. If you like the wines and offer a deal, you are setting yourself up for criticism – such as, “Gary has a butt load of wine to sell and a loyal following – all he has to do is says 90+ and it will fly off the shelves…” I, for one, don’t need another infomercial – next we’ll have flashing lights and buzzers going off. KEEP IT REAL…

    QOTD #2
Loved the fast pace and more wines the merrier.

    QOTD#1
    You should offer free shipping.
It’s another way of helping people expand their PAL.
Perhaps when you do a taping on just 1 or 2 wine varietals and you encourage Vaniacs to go out and try one. That would be a good time to offer free shipping of any wine you carry, or perhaps can get, but limited to the varietal grape from the specific show.
Therefore you are being VERY TRUR to your message and additionally helping people in these difficult times to experience and expand their PAL,

If you had offered free shipping on a Pinotage today I would have ordered 1 or more.

Gary I understand the folks who don’t want the show to become pitchmen or something…but a couple thougths on that, this long into the show, I for one trust you…I am convinced that you are after sharing knowledge first and foremost on WLTV, and that if you started giving overstock wines 90+ just to sell them, the vaynernation are full of strong enough palletes that we’d call ya out anyway! I remember a ways back you had a little Ustream talk on a little wine(I think it was 40-50% Petite Verdot, I wish I membered the name), just because you thought it was so awesome…I really really dug that. I also love free shipping codes, if you offered one every once in a while it wouldn’t make me think “Gary wants to sell some wine” it would make me think “Wow Gary really wants us to try this wine” I mean you say, “go out and find this!” all the time, but if you threw in soemthing like that I’d think, Ok this warrants more attention.

    Sorry for the Tolstoy!

  • Gary- Your integrity is your most valuable asset. That said, it’s been a while since you did a 3 pack or 4 pack tasting. If you did those every 3 months or so and gave a deal on shipping- I think it would maintain your independence and expand pallets around the country. I live in Guam, 7942 miles away, but if I was in the States (and when I return), I would (will) totally be into it.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Nice pace. Keeping the criticism and the sales distinct, underlines an integrity, that once crossed may be hard to re-achieve. U have an agressive email sales effort already. The NJ store is a joy to visit with an impressive wine collection and staff. The percieved independance of the TV program adds weight to your comments. Thanks for asking.
