lines of the day – ‘I just used the word ‘play’ 9 times in the last five minutes.’, ‘nuts in my mouth are very exciting, yeah I said it’, and ‘It’s like someone took Pinnochio and stuck him up my nose.’

Phenomenal episode as these blind tastings always are. Loved it, especially the fact that the 96 point Parker wine was scored 68 points by our man. Also featured the most ill-informed, ridiculous, downright stupid comment ever read out by GV. Whoever sent that piece of rubbish in should be ashamed of themselves.

This weekend I had the 2007 Sicily IGT “Bizir” from Salvatore Ajello. 87 points, but you have to have a greasy fish to go with it. Or maybe clams. and garlic. and a nice fat sauce.

TIP: Domaine Gayda in Languedoc France has the “Archet Chardonnay 2008”. Only 5 or 6 euro, 3 months of oak, a great wine with fantastic value!

Probably my favorite type of show is the blind tastings. Always fun to see how the stack up at the end!! 🙂

QOTD 1: favorite number is 77. Has been since I was very young. Not sure why, it just is.

QOTD 2: Last wine I had was the 2007 Tegernseerhof T26 Gruner Veltliner. Let it breathe in the bottle for over an hour. I would have to score it a 88. I am having a hard time remembering it so I might take that score down one more. It was my first gruvee I have had away from small pourings at tastings.

I enjoyed it, and the difference of it from all of the white wines I have had before. I think I liked the difference in taste more then the actual taste.

So 2007 Tegernseerhof T26 Gruner Veltliner 88 points.

The guy certainly puts the dick in deedick.

Celebration this weekend. A random friend brought a 1996 Opus. Cliche, I know. Probably one of two good vintages of Opus ever though.

Love south african wines. People need to drink Pinotage.

Interesting show and a surprisingly wide range of scores. Obviously you and Big Bob do not agree on Chardonnays. 🙂

QOTD: I had several wines over the weekend. The best was probably the 2000 Meerlust Rubicon red blend from Stellenbosch which I would score 91 points (nice complexity). We also had a 2006 Joel Gott Zinfandel that I would give about 85 points (somewhat boring), a 2005 Bordeaux Superior (cannot recall the producer) that was much too young and I would score that about 85-88 points because of its youth, and a 2005 Aglianico (again, don’t recall the producer) that I scored 90 points. All in all, a very good wine weekend.

    GV-
Great show. Awesome to see some of the up and comers taking the stage away from the traditions. Will have to seek them out.

    qotd1: #6
qotd2: Brian Carter Cellars 2005 Abracadabra. Great name, the composition changes every year. My wife and I bought this on our first tasting trip in WA. 88 points. Big wine, did not allow it to breath enough at first but definitely one we will get again. Sort of blind tasting though since you have so clue what it is!

Brown paper bags – very important and today just proved it! QOTD’s: 7. I had a great wine the other day which was £4! 2007 Luis Felipe Edwards Cab Sauv, Colchagua Valley, Chile. Very light and fruity but had some other stuff going on as well, 10 year old vines and hand picked grapes gave it some nice complexity and made it as your dad would say “a perfect summer wine”! For pizza and barbecues etc. I think it merited an 88 point score which for me is a good score.
Do more blind tastings they are really interesting and you can learn a lot about your palate!

  • As always, Gary a great show big fan, interesting stuff today. Who was the dude trying to hide behind the paper in the background?

    My number is 7.

The wine this weekend, there were 2.
Columbia Crest grand estates Chardonnay 2006 and
Fortnum and Mason of London own lable Shiraz from the Borossa 2007

The Chardonnay I really enjoyed, lovely golden colour, not hugely aromatic but clean, smooth creamy palate of vanillia, butter popcorn and baked melon but very well integrated oak, very nice 88/100

The Shiraz……..OAK MONSTER. Really unbalanced, spice, oak, splinters….BAD. 74/100

QOTD 1: Grenache or Garnacha! I knew that, I promise… haven’t you mentioned it previously as well?
QOTD 2: Alban Vineyards Viognier. I’d give it an 81. Disappointing as the alcohol was not well integrated, nor was the oak, some decent fruit but it just wasn’t coming together. Speaking of oak…
Geez, Mount Eden smackdown RP: 96 AND WS (JL) 93… GV 68. Wow! I liked it back in january myself, though I often share many of your sensibilities when it comes to judicious oak, mid-palate interest, etc… HMMM!

qotd – favorite number is 9. this weekend, Occhipinti Siccagno 2006 Nero D’Avola, which I give a 90… very rustic, nose is like a dry hot summer day, burnt grass… little bit of rubber, floral aromas, buffalo sauce… on the palette light body, sweet tannins, but a almost like a reuben thing going on, Russian dressing, cabbage… red horseradish, with a strong real cherry juice background component and a long finish. I’ve had a few neros, this is by far the best one (I think it’s like 35 bones), but I’ve yet to be disappointed and most are in the $10-20 range.

Has been a very hectic time for me sorry I am just now getting to view the episode and post a comment.

Do not ever let anyone try to shame you into changing your style. If they don’t like like there are other shows for them to watch and probably criticize. Those comments were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO over the top. Forget that Bozo and be yourself.

Great episode and as I have been thinking of revisiting Chardonnay, it came at just the right time.

    Favorite number – 10

QOTD – I had another Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, 3 Stones, $9.99 very good typical NZ SB 87 points.

Love the blind tasting shows most of all. Still waiting to see a blindfolded blind tasting sometime, with whites and reds.

Had The White Knight viognier (from The Other Guys, Clarksburg) over the weekend — 90-91 points. A bit o’ the oak, but complex, fun, paired well with shrimp and pesto linguini, and a good value.

You need to be green GV! You need get a set of re-usable wine bags rather than wasting brown paper bags everytime. I got a kit on amazon from bagged wine, they worked really well, we use them about once a week.
